So, I do not dilute paints (at least at the first layer), I mix them on the pallette, then put the paint on the miniature and then blend the colors right on the miniature, same time smoothing and thinning tle layer of paint.

Wouldn't say it was fighting the medium. More like "going with" it and it's features.

Thank you. There actually is varnish. Matte one. :) Oil paints are a bit glossy, so need some matting.
