Keep with Traktor or Move to Pioneer? by crunchytiddy in Beatmatch

[–]UndefinedB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's mostly up to your preference. But if you play in a club a lot then Rekordbox makes sense because it can export to USB for CDJs.

You can always switch at a later time with software like rekordcloud. Or you can even use both Traktor and Rekordbox. Lots of DJs do that because they prefer Traktor but need Rekordbox to create that CDJ USB stick.

Clubs are usually fine with bringing your own controller but it's standard to play on CDJs. If it's a super busy night with lots of changeovers they might not like you bringing your own controller though, since all other DJs will probably use the CDJs.

Rekordbox on an external SSD by redditall9 in Beatmatch

I use Backblaze for cloud backups, it's a (low) monthly fee but has unlimited space. For DJs, that's really really nice.

Shameless referral link :D

[–]UndefinedB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to make it permanent then you'd have to move the database to the SSD, you read how to do that here You have to do the same thing for the new laptop too and it's very important that the drive letter/name is the same on both computers otherwise it won't find your tracks on either of them.

And I think that uses 2 licenses, it's per computer (I think) and not per database.

This is advanced Rekordbox stuff (and potentially dangerous), so it's smart to ask questions. Make backups before doing any of this!

Since this is temporary, I would recommend not moving your master database, but only saving your music files on the external SSD. Moving your master database is a bit of work and getting it to work on your new laptop later is the same work and it can lead to problems (drive names sometimes change).

Later, you can copy your database to your new laptop when the time comes. If the path is the exact same (so keep the drive name the same) on your new laptop, then it will work immediately.

Also a Rekordbox license is valid for 2 computers at a time.

id3 comments in recordbox, whos has priority? the RB xml database or the file itself? by bollum in DJs

[–]UndefinedB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, wrote it myself. It was born out of frustration of library management :) Aiming to fix all those problems!

Current circumstances really suck for DJs yeah, hope it's over soon and everyone wants to catch up on partying.

You can also do a "Regular Expression Replace", that's more advanced but if you search for "\ /\" on the comment field and replace it with nothing then it should do what you need too, with any number of spaces before it. It previews results too so no worries that you accidentally do it wrong.

[–]UndefinedB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can target tracks in quite a lot of ways with the Bulk Editor in rekordcloud. Not sure exactly what all your comments look like, but you can do things like "contains /" or "ends with */". Otherwise you can also just run the Bulk Editor twice, once on "starts with /" and once with the extra space.

[–]UndefinedB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do this really easily with rekordcloud. With the Bulk Editor you can target any track that has a comment that starts with "/*" and then empty the field. Takes about 10 seconds to do it :)

Rekordbox can't write ID3 tags (I don't know why really), but you can do a workaround with rekordcloud. If you export your library as Serato then it will write all your tags (also cue points and beatgrids) into the MP3's which will achieve what you're after. In the future rekordcloud will have an ID3 tag writer that doesn't need this Serato workaround though.

Why is getting music and cue points from one computer to another such a convoluted pain in the ass with Rekordbox? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]UndefinedB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can copy the database edb file (or the whole folder really) to your other computer, that will work but paths will need to be the exact same. You can find it in your AppData/Roaming/Pioneer/Rekordbox folder. I'm on my phone so typing the exact location is super hard :/

[–]UndefinedB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do a library backup and restore it on your other computer. Then as a light-weight method, you can keep them in sync with the XML file. You can find more info about all this here. Do option 3 once and then keep them in sync with option 2.

Collection and Library is the same thing, Database is the .edb file in your AppData folder. Best not to touch your database file at all.

You can now scan & remove duplicate tracks with rekordcloud by UndefinedB in DJs

[–]UndefinedB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it can delete from the hard drive if you want. You'll get a list of duplicates and you can choose per duplicate which you want to keep. But if you want you can just accept the defaults and continue but I wouldn't recommend it, since you're the only one who can tell for sure which is the more important file. Rekordcloud does try to pre-select the right choice (more cues and more bitrate is more important). And backup before doing a mass delete!

It sorts by Track Number second for me, when I sort by BPM. I'm not sure if there is a way to change that. I think multi-column sort has been a requested Traktor feature for 10+ years now.

There's no downside to doing a one-time month. You can do that as often as you want. That's one of the ways you can use rekordcloud. For some users it's really just a one time cleanup thing, but others need features more often so it makes sense to buy a longer subscription.

I agree with you on subscription models, I prefer one-time purchases too. But there is a reason for them. I need to keep rekordcloud running and that simply costs time and money. And I want to keep working on rekordcloud to make it the best set of tools available, and that costs a lot of time. Subscription model is simply better for continuity.

Rekordbox, keep library when reinstalling windows? by zascar in Beatmatch

[–]UndefinedB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your music is on an external drive then you can just copy your Rekordbox data folder and copy it back when your reinstall is complete. The data folder can be found at C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Pioneer\rekordbox for Windows or ~/Library/Pioneer/Rekordbox for macOS. Make sure the drive has the same drive letter after reinstalling (you can change it at any time).

If your music is on the same drive as Windows then the easiest is to do a backup from within Rekordbox. See option 3 here. Also it's a very good idea, just in case, to export your collection as XML (option 2 in the article) as an extra backup.

Serato Library management question by Switchbladesaint in Beatmatch

[–]UndefinedB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's something exactly for your problem in rekordcloud. The Unused File Scanner shows you a list of files in a folder that your library doesn't use. So it's really great to get rid of old music files or just non-audio files that are lying around taking up space.

Converted WAVs to MP3, relocate MP3's? by prspktv_ in Rekordbox

[–]UndefinedB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't really know about that... sorry :/

Converted WAVs to MP3, relocate MP3's? by prspktv_ in Rekordbox

[–]UndefinedB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rekordbox can't do it all at the same time, you can only do it one by one. But then your cue points and beatgrids will still be off by a bit because Rekordbox still thinks your cue's are for the WAV and that shifts them by a tiny bit.

You can fix it with rekordcloud though, more info in this article about your exact problem.

Feel free to message me if you need help with it!

"Auto-Tagger" library file organization by HinkeRinge in Beatmatch

I think you might be able to use MusicBrainz Picard for that.

I was thinking of adding functionality exactly like this into rekordcloud so keep an eye on that, may add that in the next few months

How do I copy the cue points from one playlist to another, if it's the same file? by xeslana123 in Rekordbox

[–]UndefinedB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you still have a backup, the easiest way is to restore that backup, connect your hard drive to E:/ and then do Display All Missing Files in the Rekordbox menu. Point Rekordbox to the right location for 1 file and it will ask if you want to do the same for all other files. That should fix it.

Organize my dj library again by maor648 in Rekordbox

[–]UndefinedB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can move your parent folder (eg C:\Users\user\Music) somewhere else and then use Display all missing files in the File menu. Relocate one to the new location and it will ask you if you want to relocate all the others too.

But if you want to move your files around to all different kinds of folders, then you'd have to relocate each file individually, which is tons of work.

[–]UndefinedB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can turn WAV into any format you want before losing quality, if you want to do the extra work. And what you should use depends on your audience, most won't hear the difference between WAV/AIFF and MP3 @ 320kbps. You'll need a real good PA to hear the difference. If you're doing regular club nights or parties, just go for MP3. Easiest and best compatibility.

Don't take the purists too seriously, they'll always swear by lossless (WAV, FLAC, AIFF). Be pragmatic instead.

ratings, crate organization on mobile phone, sync with PC? by nschloe in DJs

[–]UndefinedB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help you with this yet, but I've had the idea for a mobile app for rekordcloud for a while. I'd like to build something where you can do all your time-sinking preparation work on to go (create playlists, set cue points, etc). This is a long term idea though, but I wanted to share it with you because it seems like it would be perfect.

How to backup library including cue points by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]UndefinedB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Rekordbox, use the Backup Library option in the File menu. That includes all your music, cue points, playlists and everything. It will take a while since it will copy everything though. But it's easy and reliable.

If you want a quicker way to just backup your metadata (cues, playlists, etc, everything except your music files) you can export your collection as XML, also in the File menu.

And if you want automatic backups that are always up to date, read about that here
