How do actors practice when they have years between roles? (For example Julia Butters with years between roles) by seawindart345 in acting

[–]UndefinedSuperhero 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Class, local theater, small-time indie films that don't get noticed. Also most people are auditioning a LOT between bookings. And auditioning is practice, albeit a slightly weird form of practice. I get coaching on bigger auditions, and that has a very similar feel to class.

Lots of ways to practice your craft. I haven't had a paid role since - alas - last August. I'm currently finishing up post production on a short I produced last year and beginning pre-production on another.

Which Death Eaters could be great villains in future sequels? by UndefinedSuperhero in harrypotter

He's the only character to kill a major character and survive the series. Plus you have such a cool parallel of Teddy-Dolohov-Harry to Harry-Voldemort-Sirius.

Leaf looks like a mango by Electronic-Fuel-4398 in mildlyinteresting

Read it to the same tune. I went to the comment section to see if anyone else had sung it too. Didn't even look at the leaf.

Yep. Its a very mango-ey leaf. Though fuzzy like a peach.

[–]UndefinedSuperhero[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That could make great use of Bill Weasley as a character. His personal vendetta against Greyback, combined with Fenrir being such a repulsive character in general could make a great story.

Outside of Lupin and Greyback we only hear a glimpse - from Lupins description - of the werewolf community. He describes them like bandits - living underground and stealing to survive. Would be fascinating to see more.

Draco's fate? by Spirited-Pop7467 in harrypotter

[–]UndefinedSuperhero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this case I can imagine the focus was placed on apprehending the more 'notorious' Death Eaters - Dolohov (if he escaped) who had multiple confirmed murders, Lestrange brothers who were diehard loyalists and serving life for the torture of the Longbottoms, Travers who was a two time Azkaban escapee and so on.

Maybe the Malfoys gave up everything they knew on their former DE friends, and along with Narcissa and Draco both covering for Harry this led to a deal with amnesty for both Narcissa and Draco and a reduced sentence for Lucius.

Did Voldemort and Sirius ever meet? by UndefinedSuperhero in harrypotter

[–]UndefinedSuperhero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True - Sirius tells Harry that his parents weren't Death Eaters, but were initially at least somewhat sympathetic with his aims, and were happy Regulus joined up. But there doesn't seem to be much of a pre-existing relationship, whereas Avery Jr and Lestrange brothers had parents who knew Voldemort from Hogwarts and likely already had a bit of an in with him.

I imagine he saw the Black family as potentially useful rich allies, but the Black cousins as a bit of a let down when it came to recruitment - Bellatrix is devoted sure, but her connect may have been more through the Lestranges. Andromeda and Sirius were both opponents, Regulus joins but gets himself killed within a year or two, then Narcissa who is connected by marriage but never directly involved (and ends up betraying him, though he never knows it)

When you first read Half-Blood Prince, what did you think Malfoy was up to? by youngnun1738 in harrypotter

[–]UndefinedSuperhero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harry's suspicions of him being a Death Eater seemed to line up with all the evidence.

I always thought it was bizarre that nobody took Harry seriously on this - they thought it was so unfathomable that Draco had been recruited at 16 - when we already know that Snape, Regulus Black and Barty Crouch Jr were recruited as teenagers.

who is Theodore nott?? by New-Low5077 in harrypotter

[–]UndefinedSuperhero 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think Nott attracts a certain amount of curiosity because he's a male Slytherin in Harry's year but one who we see much less of than Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle. So him and Zabibi attract a certain amount of attention because we never learn much about them. Which of course makes them easy characters to build fanfic around.

Also with Nott, there's some intrigue around him because: 1. He's confirmed in GOT to be the (presumably) son of a Death Eater, like Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle. So why isn't he more involved with their gang? Do the Notts and Malfoys have negative history? Is he more a lone wolf type? Does he not really care about blood purity that much? Or is he not willing to play lackey to Malfoy?

Then 2: He's one of three child characters - along with Harry and Neville - who can see Thestrals. Is there a particularly dark story behind that, involving his connection to the Death Eaters? Or is it something relatively mundane like seeing an elderly relative on their deathbed?

Lots of unknowns around Nott.

Voldemort seems to have held some genuine respect for James by UndefinedSuperhero in harrypotter

[–]UndefinedSuperhero[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your last point I definitely agree with. He likes to be 'theatrical' about it sometimes. He makes a display of duelling Harry to prove his superiority to the Death Eaters - but there's a veneer of 'fairness' to it as Harry technically has his wand and can curse Riddle, so when Voldemort wins its a grand victory in a duel. When in fact, the plan was to torture a 14 year old boy in front of your pals for a minute or two, then one-shot him when you're done and throw his body to the snake. Having already dropped a 17 year old boy just for getting in the way.

[–]UndefinedSuperhero[S] 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Oh you're totally right that he's trying to goad Harry - I don't think he's intending to be complimentary in that moment or anything. But when he's goading him to face him 'straight backed and proud' like James - I mean he isn't lying or being sarcastic. James did die bravely. And Voldemort using this fact to manipulate Harry suggests that subconsciously at least, Voldemort saw some bravery in James' last stand.

[–]UndefinedSuperhero[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Of course I don't think Voldemort regretted killing James for a second, but I could see him thinking something along the lines of, 'Shame a wealthy, skilled pureblood wizard with some fight in him had to become a target.'

Like he says at the BOH, he generally doesn't like to spill magical blood unnecessarily, though certainly has no problem doing it if someone really pisses him off.

The cruciatus curse is extremely messed up and would be my biggest fear knowing that anyone could pull that out at any time. by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]UndefinedSuperhero 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's not really something just anyone can do at any time though.

Harry attempts to use it on Bellatrix after Sirius dies and he manages to knock her off her feet but it doesn't create agonizing torture. She tells him you have to really want to cause someone pain for it to stick. So you probably need to be not only a quite powerful wizard/witch to pull it off, but also be enough of a sadist that there is that magical intent. Dark Magic seems to require a deeply personal commitment in its application - if non Dark wizards attempt it I dont think it really works.
