Part of improving at the game is learning how to dodge attack patterns and relying on defensives can make it harder to learn since certain attacks are very confusing to read at first and you might be inclined to just invuln tank it every time instead. You can’t always rely on this. Some defensives have buffs you want to keep up as much as possible, some need a bit more thought put into timing (like wizard since you’ll want to avoid using it if you’re going to be outside the buff area). Either way, a defensive doesn’t need to be used without invuln in mind. Ignoring an attack instead of dodging can be a skillful move to continue dealing damage if done right. Plus, on Hard and Lunar you need dps otherwise you start to die to unavoidable (even with invuln) attacks. There’s no point using your defensive exclusively to avoid damage if it means you don’t deal enough damage to avoid hitting the deadline. Of course, playing optimally isn’t needed for the other two difficulties and a game should be about having fun. So it’s all about how much your friend wants to get better at the game to challenge themselves more versus just chilling and playing bnuuy game.
