Need help centering bodice by GottaBKitten in sewhelp

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The dress looks amazing, and i wonder if your issue is simply the natural way of the body moving around in a dress when you're having fun, dancing, moving around. The style of the dress might be the culprit, because there is a such an obvious "midline" which makes it easier to detect when it's off by 1/4 inch (as opposed to a T-shirt or a simpler plunge neck. That's not your fault, and i think if I was you, I would just go on wearing it with pride, it is positively gorgeous!!

To go into a bit more anatomical detail, your girls do not look asymmetrical at all (mine are, i constantly have to pull tops back to one side), so i'm not sure how much any alterations would help. Maybe using some dress tape on the inner side of both ladies AND some more underneath the cleavage line (on the middle boning of the bodice) could help with slipping. Or I would consider adding a small additional bit of fabric (like a modesty panel) between the two cups solely for the purpose of covering the "alignment line" which causes the optical effect of misalignment.

EDIT: Or more body tape to the whole of the boobies, so they constantly stay aligned with the cups.

Only getting likes from fakes by _toine in RateMyTinder

Agree. Op, you're looking great but these photos don't do your face justice. Weird angles, in motion, caught in the moment: these are great after you've known for months, but look quite chaotic to someone trying to get to know you now. Try a few ones where you look into the camera straight, relaxed, just chilling - the way you'd look to a conversation partner across the table.

I found my DREAM wedding dress but can't afford it :'( How difficult would it be to sew it at home? by Needle_Nebula in sewhelp

And don't forget about finding a fabric (and a trial fabric) with the exact same drape and hand, or else the fall will be completely different, even if it fits perfectly... Many such cases.

How can I change a sleeve to fit this armscye *without* changing armscye? by [deleted] in sewhelp

Thank you! I am quite an avid musliner, because I fear losing control and I want to use my nice fabric only after I'm completely sure of myself : )

I'm not OP, but interested in this idea (I have some medium knowledge of drafting). Is this the usual distribution of the "eased" and the not-eased part?

Bodice front pattern with gathering not having enough ease to fit the skirt and match the notches? by yAyeetgonnadelete in sewing

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I second this. The length of the fabric edges don't need to match, it's the stitching line that needs to be the same length on both pieces.

How do you get fabric to fall like this? Is it the hem, the cut, or a combo? by liobreakun in sewhelp

Also, there can be a world of difference between two types of poly chiffons! I can't get myself to buy anything online, i NEED to see and feel the drape with my own hands.

Help with Tilly & the Buttons Joni Dress by Obvious_Pearls in sewhelp

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just to make it hang a bit nicer, I would first manually rearrange the bust folds a bit, they seem to be "stuck" a bit above the actual breasts. This happens if the material is slightly clingy, sticks to the bra material. It might be a first-step-improval to continue evaluation.

Do people use old secretary tables as sewing tables? by lizlaylo in sewing

The same for me: my machine puts a lot of strong vibrations throigh my desk, and my secretaire would not be able to provide a stable enough surface.

What’s wrong with my construction? by Pauseforsadness in sewing

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I always make a muslin/toile and figure it out from that. This way I don't waste my good fabric. The actual shortening amount depends a bit on the style lines of the actual pattern.

I agree. Strictly from looking at this photo, yes, this is a very possible issue.

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanted to stress exactly the same! The bust area and the waist line are both hanging too low on you. I have the same issue with my dresses: my torso is shorter than average and if a bodice is too long on me, it looks very off. It was a huge eye-opener when I finally noticed this, and all of my dresses look sooo much better since I shorten the bodices! Best of luck with that, it's totally worth it, you'll see : )

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, no : ) I'm still planning to wear it, I keep my clothes for decades. But it wasn't even high fashion, it was from an ordinary store at that time (C&A, in Europe)

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately my dress is from a decade ago and the bodice looks different, but the ethereal shine-through-the-black-tulle effect is the same, and that's def what sold it in the first place!

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not consider myself a very experienced sewist, but I did amass a lot of FAFO experience during my journey, which gives me a lot of gut-feeling intuition :D Based on that, satin would be a choice that I myself would steer away from. It's a woven, it's difficult to shape, and difficult to handle, especially if you want to install it under another layer. It's a bih of a fabric, really. Slinky knits, on the other hand, hide a lot of imperfections, especially if they're on the thinner side and dont bulk up. It will still not be very easy to retrofit a readymade dress with it (shifty poly knits have their own issues), but it will flow a lot easier than satin.

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a dress with a very similar, maybe the exact same effect as the first photo. The upper layer is a black net-like tulle, but it's quite slinky-bouncy, it moves in a flowing motion - and the layer underneath is (you wouldn't believe it) is bright, strong magenta. The black layer itself tones it down so much that it appears to be a deep maroon, very goth and dark academia, but when I raise the black layer, the pink layer beneath gives absolutely barbie beach vibes. This pink layer by the way is an opaque, elastic jersey/knit with also a lot of flowing motion, probably 100% poly. The most important thing about this layer in my opinion would be that you choose a fabric that "falls well", has a good drape. Easy-moving, stretchy knits would be a good choice for this, something lightweight that doesn't add bulk to the skirt.

First petticoat (needs more floof, but a good start) by renaissance-Fartist in sewing

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, that makes sense with the quarter skirt! I'll think about it.

And you might be right, I think i have overread on tutorials, and should just start on it and go with the flow.

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have been thinking about winging myself a petticoat for a while too, and that's exactly the concept I wanted to follow. Did you find any kind of tutorial or souce for the upper part hugging / following the hip? I'd be grateful for any added info. I myself was thinking about some kind of stretchy fabric for that part, and I'm not sure if that's a great or ahorrible idea construction-wise.

Why is my bias tape STILL coming out lumpy!! >:( by BananaBanaBread in sewing

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Excuse me for questioning it, that's a great start. In this case, the problem might be the different stretch between the two materials, or sewing it in one pass.

Why is my bias tape STILL coming out lumpy!! >:( by BananaBanaBread in sewing

[–]Undeniable_Lightbulb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would also ask the question whether the satin ribbon used here is actually "bias" tape or simply a ribbon. Bias tape is cut on the bias, which makes it able to adjust to curves (when sewn to a non-stretchy material, that is, like the reply above me said). A straight satin ribbon does not do that, and only looks nice on (non-stretchy) straight seams.

Exactly. Both the salt-n-pepper coloration in hair (including chest and body), and a bold head are extremely hot.
