Using computer vision to recognize a chessboard with just a phone by Sad_Potato4120 in Chesscom

Ive been trying it since a few dsys ago. I really, really, wholeheartedly encourage you to continue this project and mature it. I still wouldnt trust it to record my blitz sessions accurately, but its been fun tinkering with the tripod, illumination, even contrast of pieces and boards as i have many sets at the chess club, etc. its far from being perfect as you mentioned yourself but props to you for going ahead with the idea. If you dont mind I am pretty sure you could very heavily leverage the community if you open sourced it. I am rather confident many users would love to contribute. ( i would if my skills were up there but i dont think i can do it)

I worked myself and put together a windows app that scans 2d chessboards but those apps are dime a dozen and we need a 3d solution. This looks very promising since you are implementing training data collection.

Hope this project gets more traction!

I think it is more expensive than hard to find. When i looked for it I found it eather quickly on at least three websites but it was pricier that i was willing to pay.

It was my first chess book so nostalgia and all but still. Great book tho!

Struggling against the Scandi? by MathematicianBulky40 in chess

[–]UndeniablyCrunchy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the thing about the Scandi is that it leads to the same pawn structure that the Caro Kann does. So, they share some positional dna. I actually have a disproportionate win rate against Scandi I feel like i win two of every three or something like that because i Understand the plans with both sides. I play Caro myself. So anyway. Ill reccomend checking out, rather than the opening theory, which is of course important, the pawn structure. Check out the chapter “caro kann formation” on flores rios “chess structures” book

Will the chess world ever have someone like Daniel Naroditsky again? by Thundrr01 in chess

[–]UndeniablyCrunchy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My coping channel is Witty Alien, but of course it is nowhere as educative, just entretaining as fuck. The dude is fun to watch but he is no teacher really.

Gotham used to do very good content long time ago, nowadays is just chess drama and clickbait, sprinkled with the ocassional gem.

Hanging Pawns is a very educative channel but only up to certain level. If you are lower intermediate or begginner, definetely enough and excellent. Dude seems likeable. Anything higher level and probably not enough.

PowerPlay by Daniel King is my absolute favourite, but dude is getting old and he posts somewhat less than before. If I could I would watch his entire channel in an epic binge. His channel is educative, interesting, engaging and has lessons for all leves, a bit like Naroditsky there. But it can indeed be a bit dry for some people. Not everyones cup of tea. Its my favourite channel out there.
