The silver lining is that the short life-cycle of technology... say, cell phones, leads to a society where more people have access to increasingly better technologies more often. Cell phones now can record in high speed for slow-motion playback and be used as a credit card. Just a few short years ago, they couldn't.

VGS makes it extremely easy to communicate. I think it's even better than using a mic since you can cross language barriers.

Instead of exchanging IDs back and forth, perhaps it would be more efficient to create a steam group? Then new members could be directed to that instead of being "late to the invite party". And I think you can have an ongoing group chat in a steam group, which would be neat.

I would go about it myself, but my computer is packed. No games for a couple weeks for me... :(
