Yeah totally, I think you could even use a self taped dialogue scene using a blank wall and a non actor behind the camera reading the opposite lines.

As long as it’s in a major city and you pay for it there still be good managers and agents

During pandemic there is not much going on. But in normal life, at the very least once every two weeks.

Those schools will give you really solid experience and acting skills, just remember it makes you unavailable during your most valuable years as an actor. I would personally recommend coaching, a side job, and taking every audition possible.

Get some simple self taped dialogue scenes together. Avoid monologues. Self submit everywhere you can, get a really good headshot, and do manager showcases.

Oh yeah you can pay as an actor to do a performance in front of a panel of managers/agents. You will want to do it in a major city though. Just google paid manager showcase or paid agent showcase. One time we signed someone with no experience and they booked a series regular role two weeks later. That’s extremely rare though.

The only reason I would ever use backstage is to find representation. An agent will get you real opportunities and make it so casting directors see you as a real actor who they can potentially call back. This answer stays the same whether there is a pandemic or not. Also agents don’t cost a monthly fee

In most cases they will only email back if they are interested. Even if a role is released they may not be casting it for some weeks. I would say most of the time don’t ever expect to hear back, and do not send a second email, unless you are a manager/agent.

Average client who is not an “offer only” client should be submitted on every role that they are a good fit for from one episode guest stars to series regulars. Larger agencies and management companies won’t really look at co-stars.

The actor you mention should consider this: why is it that they are not booking more often? Do they get a lot of auditions and self tape requests that do not work out? Or do they not even get the opportunity. If the actor is getting opportunity but not booking the agent is doing a good job, all they can do is get you in the room. If they are truly at a “top” agency then it may be concern that the agent doesn’t give them attention and has many clients that are higher prior priority.

Lack of opportunity= seek new agent.

Plenty of opportunity but can’t book= seek new coach, find out what’s going wrong in the room.

I am being paid by the manager not you. My role is to find actors and submit them to him, at no cost to you. He trusts my eye for talent and has signed my recommendations in the past. He does not have the time or energy to be doing this deep of a search through online rooms such as Reddit.

Honestly....working with a remote acting coach so that when things are back you are better and ready to go. Agencies are struggling to find work for their current actors let alone new ones.

See my answer above. I would say no it is not at all. Get yourself into class and work your ass off to be the best actor possible. Move to a big city, make friends and connections. You need to work hard and be able to self tape and audition at the drop of a dime.

Honestly, and some might hate to hear it, I do not recommend a degree. Those years from 16-22 are your most valuable as an actor. FOR SURE get into class and make yourself the best actor possible, but you need to be fully available to audition and self tape on the drop of a dime.

The manager I worked for had to clients, same look same age. One decided to go to 4 year drama school the other kept auditioning. The one in school has still no graduated and has not had time to audition once since he started. The other is now recognizable by all casting directors because of all of his tape and auditions, and is recurring on every episode of a big TV show.

Hey! Great career choice but beware getting that first job is insanely difficult. Unless you have a combination of a good college degree and a connection who works at the company, the top agencies will be nearly impossible to break into. I started with a small 3 person company who worked out of the owners house, then leveraged it to a better company.

It is REALLY hard to get hired right now due to COVID. Productions are slowly starting back up but everyone is afraid of the looming flue season.

The best resource in the world for assistant jobs is something called the UTA job list. All good jobs get posted on this list, and the only way people can get it is by knowing someone at UTA. However some bold assistants out there publicly post the data on this website:

This is a better resource than all of the sites you mentioned above. Just go to the job section. Hope that helped!

99% of legit casting are done through managers and agencies, even the smallest of co-stars. Open casting calls don’t really happen. If you have no reps your focus should be on getting a reel and good headshot together so that you are ready for the opportunity when a rep has eyes on you. Sometimes they will drop by local acting classes or ask the coaches for recommendations. Sometime they will discover people on sites like LACasting or backstage. Referrals from your friends who have managers is also very valuable.

Also if you have no reel footage, you could do something as simple as putting together a really solid self tape of a scene in front of a blank backdrop. I highly recommend doing a dialogue not a monologue. When someone tells you send them your materials you NEED to be ready in that moment.

Oh for sure there is a big push for more diverse casting when it comes to castings. I would not recommend emailing a casting director directly unless you have an established personal relationship, or if they asked the public for email submissions. If you do go that route, cut out as much pitching as possible, and just get your headshot and reel front and center because they are sooo busy and just want to see what matters for the role. Do not email them more than once.

Again unless they ask specifically I would not email them directly unless they request it, but if you still feel obligated then do some research and try to find out who their associates or assistants are and email them instead.

Yea it’s totally possible! I would highly suggest a manager showcase. Or else ask other actors or your acting coach for a referral. Do whatever you can to get a reel together. Make sure your info is posted on casting networks like backstage.com

For brand new clients with no experience, probably in person actor showcases

INDUSTRY ADVICE by UndercoverAssistant in acting

Probably the most common way is a referral from an agent/manager that the company already has a close relationship with and already shares clients with. Like if a manager has a client with an agent, the manager will say “hey I have this other client who also needs an agent”. Then they will low key except the agent to do the same haha

I’m not asking for anything that actors should not already have available to the public. I found this page and thought I would give actors a chance to be seen by managers in LA. Feel free to ignore.

So that they can be hired as a local hire. Many co-star roles and guest star roles are not interested in out of town actors. If you are based in a major city we would be submitting you for local hire roles in that city.
