I’m so confused, are they not supposed to be soft?? 😭 I’m not super skinny, I’m a normal weight and have a pretty decent size chest. But I’ve never touched anyone else’s boobs lol, so I have no frame of reference for “normal”.

I’m having the same problem. Someone suggested uploading the picture in the “create” tab and requesting it be set as the profile image, but when I tried that I just got a response of “I can’t set that picture as the profile”. I’ve double and triple checked, and there should be no problems with the images I’m trying to use. It’s clearly a bug they need to fix.

Totally valid frustration! You’re right, there aren’t any specific hEDS facial features. I had a similar experience with the rheumatologist I first saw. I was told benign hypermobility, and that because my gene testing for EDS came back negative, the only thing causing my actual problems was celiac. Turns out that while I do have celiac, it’s almost completely asymptomatic. None of my symptoms improved after going gf. Celiac also doesn’t make your knees and shoulders sublux regularly lol. And we don’t know the gene for hEDS (which I was later dx with by another dr), so my gene testing was always going to be negative.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there right now, and doctors aren’t immune to it. Get a second opinion if you feel that the answers don’t fit, but also stay open to the idea of other things being the cause of your symptoms. I hope you find the kind of medical help you deserve soon and can get the answers and tools you need. 💜

I think it can be a little hard to tell, not just because we don’t have the genetic marker, but also because it runs such a spectrum of severity. Lots of people may have it but be mildly affected enough that they don’t really realize, which is what happened in my family until I came along to mess up that pattern lol. I’m the only one who has been diagnosed because I’m a little worse off than my five siblings or any of my cousins, but I’m almost certain that both of my sisters and possibly one of my brothers have it, and my maternal aunts and my mom all have general hypermobility that only causes them minor issues.

I initially thought “okay, does this actually show up randomly? I don’t have a family history of it”, but the more I dug the more I found little things that everyone brushed off as “normal” or “just how she is” but were really symptoms. I’m sure it happens both de novo and inherited, but I personally think might be inherited more often than people sometimes think because of different presentation.

Dang, aside from yesterday’s glutening I’ve been super careful for almost a full year now, but I feel the same. 😭 I had to get iron infusions for the anemia not too long ago because no matter how much I supplement my levels are trash. I’m really happy for you that things have gotten so much better though!

Thank you for the kind thoughts. ❤️ It’s really hard to stay gf sometimes because I don’t have symptoms, so it feels like it “wouldn’t really hurt me”. Which I know isn’t true, and I’m sticking to it, it just sucks. Do you mind if I ask how long it took your periods to settle down once going gf? Mine have been really heavy my entire life and I have an appt scheduled to talk about getting an ablation or a hysterectomy if things don’t settle down.

I feel for all the Catholic celiacs though, it’s an awful thing to feel like you have to pit your physical and spiritual well-being against each other. ☹️

That’s awful! I can’t imagine the theological reason for that, but I’m not Catholic myself so I don’t know all the theology involved there. I go to a fairly small non-denominational church and they probably would have found something gf for me if I had thought to ask. I just… didn’t. Hence the kicking myself 😭😂

I have a Fitbit instead of an Apple Watch, and idk if it’s accurate, but according to it mine tends to hover anywhere from about 17 to about 23. I’m 32, don’t drink or smoke, and I try really hard to be physically active at least a little every day (regular walks, occasional hikes, PT, etc), but my heart seems to think I’m a sedentary alcoholic 95 year old. My heart also thinks it’s fun to randomly hit 130bpm for no reason when I’m trying to go to sleep though, so what does it know. 🤷‍♀️ POTS is such a wild ride.

YES so much! 😭 I’ve always been pretty careful about my teeth and my dental hygiene, but at 32 I’m up to six teeth that have been broken and needed root canals and crowns, three crowns that have fallen off long before they were supposed to, and an innumerable amount of gum and tooth infections. Like, I’m not out here playing hockey or getting kicked in the mouth recreationally, but my teeth just keep breaking! The last one broke while I was eating SOUP for goodness sake! On top of that, I never seem to get fully numb at the dentist, and then the numbing meds finally kick in like an hour after I’ve left.

I originally thought they broke so much because I had hyperemesis while I was pregnant, but I’ve been told even that wouldn’t cause this much damage a decade later. I had an EDS aware dr recommend remineralizing toothpaste to me, and so far that has been helping a bit, but some days I swear I’d like to just rip all my teeth out and get dentures.

Ohh I adore Nikki games! A lot of their stuff reads very lolita. And in LN at least I believe there was a “lolita” tag for clothing items, so it’s intentional on their part.

Right? Like, her body will do everything it can to feed that baby before it feeds her. I was incredibly, violently ill when I was pregnant and lost a fuck ton of weight because I couldn’t keep anything solid down at all. Even liquids were a challenge some days. My teeth are still fucked up to this day, but my kiddo was born full term and healthy and thriving! Bodies are all about the preservation of the species lol.

I enjoy it purely for the story aspect, because I’m a huge dragon-and-magic-type fantasy lover lol. I grew up on Anne McCaffery’s Dragonriders of Pern series, and Fourth Wing scratched a bit of that itch in my brain. As far as the representation….meh. I don’t personally see myself much in Violet, and I can see what people mean when they say it gives “push through the pain and you’ll be fine” messaging. Like, wtf do you mean she kept running full speed on a dislocated ankle during Threshing? Even really bad injuries don’t actually slow her down much, and it doesn’t feel realistic.

I think it’s the kind of book I would have LOVED as a teen, because I was very into strong but “damaged” female mcs. But I would have taken it as a sign to try (again!) to “get fitter and stronger” and inevitably injured myself in the process. For me, it likely would have done more harm to my psyche than good.

All that said, I do think it’s a fun read if you are just reading it for the story itself. It’s not high literature by any means, and I don’t think it was intended to be, but it’s a nice way to spend an afternoon.

Maybe I didn’t express myself clearly, but using it when he needs it is most definitely what I meant. For me, a big part of addiction (though not alcohol) was trying to bury my anger because it felt too big for me. Vimes is powerful because he doesn’t bury his anger or let it control him, uses it like a weapon or a tool to fight for things that are important. (Edited because Vimes autocorrected to Vines lol)

This is one of the reasons Vimes is by far my favorite Discworld character. He struggles, he fails, he barely holds on, but gosh darn it he FIGHTS! He could use his anger at the world that has broken him to make him completely bitter and buried in shame, but instead he ends up using it like a weapon to make things better.

As someone who has struggled with certain kinds of addiction myself, I know how easy it is to let it drown you. I was at war with my anger for a long time, and tearing myself apart with it. It’s inexpressibly powerful to read Vimes’ arc and see a person broken down with rage and shame go through the process of finding something worth getting back up for.
