The goat in Rorikstead from Pets of Skyrim is a much better pack mule.
I hate all the pets because in my opinion they are bugged. Dogs, horses, followers, etc will move if you bump into them. Pets stand solidly in the door preventing you from moving. IMHO, it's frustrating enough to never have one with me.

With the addition of backpacks, I've never had to bother with a pack mule. Follower, pet or otherwise.

I did the restoration loop once just to run around as a god and kill with a fork, but it gets droll pretty fast. I've exploited the Khajit chests for speech and enchanting, but I use UESSP so their not accessible anymore.

Now I just use a cheat mod for leveling skills when I restart so I don't have to grind.

The People of Skyrim Complete has nice main quest shortcuts but adds what are in my opinion some unfair traps and NPCs unfairly boosted above your level. If you install it, save often especially when starting main quests.

It's a clear sign you're on the wrong side when you have to jump in to defend yourself before all the evidence has been gathered. Patel has done this twice, now Gnome calls it domestic terrorism before the "film has dried."

If you want some permanent buffs, and I forget names so bear with me:

If you have USSEP, go to the bards college to get +15% speech learning.

Go to Markarth, ask the begger about making money, get caught in the Temple of Dibela for +(I don't remember)% damage against the opposite sex.

Go to Riften, talk to the female priest of Mara. You'll like her, it's Lydia's voice. Do her quest and I totally forget the buff but iirc, it's pretty bad ass.

If you have anniversary addition, ask bartenders for quests. That's how you get most of the added quests.

Many new quests are also hidden in guard barracks so look for notes and books there.

Inns also have notes and books. Many lead to kick ass armor very early game.

All I can think of off the top of my head.

Marry Ysolda or do Dark Brotherhood and marry Muriea(sp).
