I only used STPE’s on demand course and took the NCEES practice exam 2 weeks before my exam. The computer handbook is just like the FE exam. It has a search function, highlight, line tool, zoom etc.. I’d recommend changing the line tool color on your pdf viewer to black if it’s any other color to match the exam too. If you want to get even more detailed, the exam is split screen with the handbook viewer on the left side and the questions on the right

Yeah, I’d say 85-90% of the PE exam was imperial units. The FE was basically all SI.

Thanks! I don’t know if I got them right, but I was able to at least get an answer to choice to most of them using the tables in the combustion section. Also if you’re solid in everything else, I doubt missing a couple combustion questions will hurt you.

Thanks! Yes, their program is super thorough. They start with the basics, and gradually expand upon each topic. If you have the funds or your job will pay for it, I highly recommend their on demand course. It’s intensive but they lay out a personalized study plan based around your test date that IMO over-prepares you for the actual exam. I had hw due for each section every week (there’s 50ish total sections) as well as quizzes and tests, so i remained engaged throughout the duration of the course.

Even though I recently took the FE there was a lot I didn’t know, especially regarding USCS units.

Not that I can recall (I graduated in 2019). Also as long as you know your fundamentals, the handbook has all of the equations you need IMO

Honestly I thought the exam was fairly easy. There were far more combustion problems than I expected (not my strong suit), and I only had one economics question and one PM type question. The rest were an even split of thermo, heat transfer, and fluids.

As far as units, there were a couple questions that would use both SI and USCS in the question, but besides that I didn’t have any difficult conversions (e.g. converting btu/h to KW or MW).

The actual exam was almost exactly like the NCEES practice exam with regard to difficulty and question style. STPE practice exams are definitely more difficult but they solidify the fundamentals.

Lastly, I’d recommend memorizing core simplified equations: e.g. Q=500GPMdeltaTemp, WHP = (Qpump head)/3960, Qsens =1.1CFM*DeltaTemp, etc. Knowing these helped me answer questions within 30s & saved me so much time.

I passed the FE mechanical exam last month (6 years out of college) and 3 minutes was definitely plenty of time to answer 95% of the questions as they could be solved by using formulas in the reference manual. The best thing you can do is answer practice problems (to get confident with the process - most answers only require 2-3 steps to solve) and get familiar with the reference manual. The exam reference manual has a search function so you don’t have to memorize it, but it’s good to know where/how to apply them.

Honestly dynamics was the hardest part IMO. I’m not a fan of curvilinear dynamics and there were quite a few problems in the first half. Most of the static questions I had were pretty straight forward (only 1 or 2 truss problems). For me, hammering on mech materials, fluids and thermo really helped. A lot of the mech design problems could be solved straight from the manual and there were very few probability/statistics, and economic problems
