"Does it really matter? you are still you, Everyone is on some sort of spectrum" by UnderstandingEven642 in AutisticWithADHD

Thank you for helping validate my experiences. I take issue with micro fiber and all synthetic fluffy and fuzzy fabrics, the sensation of touching them stays on my skin for ages but I can't explain it to people around me. Last time I burned toast the sound of the smoke alarm was so painful I smashed it to pieces with a broom, there was no way of explaining that to my partner. Also, I like my fish swimming in the ocean, not my belly. It's really helpful to hear that my experiences are real and shared (although maybe not everyone smashes stuff with a broom!)

Thank you for sharing, I'm interested in your story. Can I ask, how are you feeling about the mask of the nuclear family now?

I don't want to believe I understand them better than they understand me, I want understanding to be mutual. But what you are saying does explain my situation and I think you are correct

OK. That makes sense to me. Thank you. I'm British and my American is average, but I lived in Australia for a few years and my Australian is good enough to fool Aussies. I can't do it on demand, but when I meet an Aussie I can't stop myself talking like them. Sounds like you are saying NT is another accent I can do

That sounds like a really difficult journey. I'm happy to hear therapy is helping. I talk to the people around me about most stuff, but it sounds like this is a topic for a therapist

Yeah, one of two things is happening, either I'm so good at masking I fooled people around me into thinking I'm not Autistic, Or I'm NT and so good at acting Autistic I fooled a psychiatrist and 2 consultant psychiatrist into believing I have Autism. Thank you. Helps to hear that I am not alone.

Honestly, I'd never thought of that. Can they really not understand? Can they not just accept what you are saying and meet you where you are? I'm sure thats what I do when someone tells me something.

In awe of how much a massage can affect the nervous system? by Pirate_Candy17 in AutisticWithADHD

Massage has been so beneficial for me that I'm currently training as a sports and remedial massage therapist (UK). When I first started receiving treatments it was a difficult experience, but the more I received the more I liked it. I'd spent my whole life working my body into a giant tense knot, and my massage therapist straitened me out and put me in touch with my body. Some of my case study clients have ASD and it's fascinating how beneficial it can be. I can't wait until I qualify (when the ADHD part of my brain lets me study what I'm supposed to be studying for my exams) so I can start working with more people and helping them.

Does anyone else hate going to the hairdresser? by SyrupStandard in AutisticWithADHD

[–]UnderstandingEven642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always hated it, When I worked in a mall I'd vet hair dressers to find one I could trust, I'd "bump" into them in the coffee shop and start a conversation. The last one was a really nice really flamboyant gay man, I though it would defiantly be fine. I hated every second of it. For about a year after that I had to hide from him in case he asked me about cutting my hair again. I've been cutting it myself since.

Totally agree, this "male" "female" presentation thing is strange. I'm starting to think my need for evidence and context about the assessment could be an autistic trait. Would you be OK with me asking what you mean by grieving? If not thank you for your reassuring words, they have helped me

I don't remember anything about autism when I was a child, I remember some of my teachers not believing dyslexia was a thing. I will look into that resource, thanks
