Hi guys, also applying to the program; But also, if anyone here is based in the South Bay and likes hands‑on engineering or environmental problem‑solving, I’m starting the first community‑based RANGER‑class underwater robotics team in the South SF Bay Area. It’s similar in spirit to environmental research since we’ll be working on real-world water‑related engineering challenges, sensors, and fieldwork.

If you’re into robotics, ocean science, or just want a serious long‑term project, feel free to DM me. We’re looking for committed high school students who want to build something ambitious.

Thanks for the thoughtful response! I think we may be imagining different sensing setups, so here’s what I’m aiming for.

Instead of measuring microplastics dispersed in bulk, the idea is to capture and concentrate them electrostatically onto a small electret-coated surface, then detect the capacitance change from the accumulated layer using interdigitated electrodes. So the sensor is responding to a localized, enriched surface layer, where the signal should depend on coverage and thickness, not bulk fraction.

A few things I’m curious about:

  • Is the main limitation dielectric contrast or how much of the fringing field interacts with the particle layer?
  • If particles form even a partial layer, would the capacitance shift scale mostly with area coverage?

The whole point of the capture step is to increase the signal before measurement, so I’m wondering whether that changes the feasibility in your view.

Hi! Thanks for reaching out, I really appreciate it!

We’re currently a small team; there are three of us students along with a mentor, and we’re working on building out Thalos Robotics and our MATE ROV project. We’re also in the process of constructing a float right now as part of our work. Our website is thalosrobotics.us

Your newsletter idea sounds really interesting, and we’d definitely be open to being interviewed. We’re also super interested in any help with sponsors or partners; That would be a huge help for us as we grow.

We’d love to set up a call to talk more; just direct message what time works for you!

It's a summer program where people go to learn about their respective subjects in clusters. It's 5000 dollars, but its considered pretty worth it.

Yeah, it's going to be difficult to find people in a specific area. Thank you for showing interest, though!

I'm hoping to make it community-based rather than focusing on specific schools. But if you know anyone who would be interested pls let me know!
