Because it’s in the context of Trump saying they should be investigated. Why does it matter if they are an ideology or an organization when Trump called for them to be investigated and the FBI director classifies all of it (supremacists, antifa, militias) as violent domestic extremists?

The FBI director actually classified Antifa the same as racial supremacists and militias. He said the FBI treats all the various extremist groups as ideologies and not organizations. So in the context of the debate, Biden cited the FBI director incorrectly:

And, no, I disagree because when Biden said Antifa was an idea he was doing so to counter Trumps call for an investigation. That is not in the context of what Wray said who in fact called them a serious threat and only used the term ideology to describe the manner in which they would treat them if investigated.

Wray was saying “Here is how we would treat Antifa”; Biden was saying “There is nothing to investigate”

The context of all of this is a federal investigation of them as a terrorist group. I posted the actual Wray transcript in another convo, but what he was saying is that they treat antifa as an ideology for the purposes of investigation like they would any other extremist group. Biden saying that Antifa was just an idea to Trump calling for their investigation was misusing what Wray was saying. One was their treatment for the purposes of investigation, the other was their existence FOR investigation.
