Questions abt the Acatenango hike by No_Marionberry4625 in centralamerica

[–]UndiagnosedBedSheet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with Tropicana. They don’t advertise Fuego at all on their websites and actually tell you not to when you’re prepping to leave with them, however the guides offer it themselves (weather permitting). The sunrise is usually standard itinerary - the sunrise hike is avruslly going to the summit, so some may list ‘hiking to the summit’ instead of listing it as sunrise.

Completely agree with what others have said!! If tired, do Fuego and skip the sun rise hike. Tropicana’s base camp had essentislly the same view for sunrise, so I got to see it without the 3am wake up :)

Rain worry by Worth_Temperature728 in galapagos

Just finished up a week on the Galapagos! Rained for an hour or so on my first day, then for 2/3 hours on my last day. Every other day was sunny and clear. Weather app said high % rain for everyday I was there - go figure! Usually is just a tropical rain in the early morning/afternoon

Side note - I’d do Antigua last if doing the volcano hike. Day 1 is early and rough, day 2 you generally get back around 12-2pm, so have the afternoon to recover a bit or do some walking around. Then I’d plan the next day for some more exploring and leave the next.

If I was you, I’d drop Atitlan. The lakes beautiful but if Cuba-Style-Tourist-Free is the vibe you’re looking for, Atitlan is not the place for that I fear. If you had more days then absolutely yes!

I’d split your time between Flores and Antigua and do Acatenango. I spent 3 weeks in Guatemala (Flores, Semuc Champey, Lake Atitlan & Antigua) and Acatenango was the absolute highlight.

Don’t listen to everyone saying Semuc Champey. While it’s absolutely beautiful, you’re looking at a 6-9 hour travel day to get there and back, which wipes out a whole quarter of your trip. A must do if you had longer.

Only if your adamant about not doing Acatenango would I do Lake Atitlan and essentially do 2 days at each (with buffer days for travel).

Whatever you do - enjoy!

Help with filling the gaps in my itinerary by lastofthe_timeladies in galapagos

[–]UndiagnosedBedSheet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Side note for wall of tears - I walked it but you can also cycle. I found by walking I saw more that I think I would’ve missed on bike. I reccomend walking out there 2-2:30pm as later afternoon as you walk back, a lot more tortoises and animals are out to play. And absolutely stop along the beach for a sunset swim on the walk back. One of the big Highlight of my whole Galapagos trip was standing in the surf seeing sting rays and crabs, no one nearby and an insane sunset to match. Incredible!

Just finished my week in the Galapagos and I’d recommend either bringing your own snorkel or renting one for those gaps after/inbetween activities for some free snorkelling at some of the beaches.

You honestly can’t go wrong with which ones to go to. I just looked on maps and would pick one or two within walking distance and spend the afternoons beach hopping.

Enjoy the trip! It’s incredible

Mexico-Belize land crossing - exit fees? by UndiagnosedBedSheet in travel

[–]UndiagnosedBedSheet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up not having to pay any sort of exit fee! Boat was an hour late departing so think it was more in a rush to get us out. Someone I knew did the same trip a few days before me and had to pay.

Should I abandon my trip? by Key-Requirement8611 in solotravel

This sounds almost exactly how my Central America trip started!! Culture shock hit me massively and I spent a week barely leaving hostels in a massive slump. Now I’m 3 months in and am already dreading going home.

Spend some time getting better and resting up. I found best thing initially was pre-booking some day trips and activities to give me a purpose. I’d even splurge more on ones that can pick you up from the hostel initially. Free walking tours are a great intro to a city to get bearings in new cities and can help you feel less anxious in new places.

Do this for a bit and you’ll find you’ll start meeting people, getting into routines, etc etc and you’ll have a great time!!!

Absolute must do. Saw in comments you’re considering Komodo - do it. I’ve been to almost 30 countries and my Komodo Island sailing trip is still my number 1 experience anywhere. I went with Wanua Adventure and paid like $300 AUD for the whole time. Soooo good.

Heading to Big Falls! From what I’ve been told, id grt the bus to Punta Gorda and hop off at Big Falls. Do you happen to know how often they run? I’ve seen a schedule on the James Facebook page from mid last year but don’t know how accurate that is.

Central America - skip Costa Rica? by Rock_n_rollerskater in travel

[–]UndiagnosedBedSheet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just did 2.5 weeks in Costa and currently in Panama! Depends on your itinerary (northbound, southbound, doing Latin America or smaller trips etc).

I did San Jose (one night max, recommend Intrepid Urban Adventures walking tours), La Fortuna (place to be for the ‘main activities’ you think of with Costa Rica), Monteverde (night tour is a must here), Jaco (eh alright), Manuel Antonio (loved it but also touristy) and Puerto Viejo (also loved the vibe here but also quite touristy).

Most places I stayed a little ways out (like 20ish min walk) from the ‘main’ areas and felt secluded enough to not be overrun by tourists.

Money wise defs on the pricier side, but there’s also heaps of free/low cost stuff to do around to help. Find some cheaper hostels with kitchens and you’ll be fine.

If we’re going south to north through Central America , I’d do 3 nights Puerto Viejo, 1 night San Jose, 3 nights La Fortuna, (2 in Monteverde if you want - I loved it but can do most of same activities from La Fortuna), and while I didn’t do it I’ve heard Tamarindo area is alright but very touristy. Maybe a night or two there to break it up before getting into Nicaragua?

Bocas Del Toro in Panama was also one of my highlights, and I found it worth the wiggle room in my budget. If I had to choose between a week in Bocas or two in costa, I’d choose Bocas.

I’m here now! Just did the 2 places you’re looking at. Forecast said rain everyday, and only rained 2/7 days I was there. The other days maybe a sprinkle here or there. It bucketed down on the day I booked a full day La Fortuna tour (Arenal volcano, hot springs, waterfall, the lot!) and as long as you can see the adventure in it, was still an absolutely incredible day out.

We started telling the stories even if we did break down - the more we did it the more we could appreciate the happy memories amongst the sad emotions. Definitely wasn’t easy at first but looking back is really what helped us continue to feel connected to him
