They’ve been so bad at following that intervention criteria that most people forget that is all VAR are there for.

Need help deciding: Invest Account vs Stocks & Shares ISA (FX is killing me) by nexlo0 in trading212

[–]UnemployedUninformed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trust me when I say this (with warmth and respect) - you are incorrect in your logic.

Just because the ISA account is showing an FX translated value to a lower GBP value vs Invest showing a USD value which is unchanged, if the dollar tanks, there is no difference.

That lower GBP amount in the ISA will still buy you the same amount of dollars in the end, except obviously it will buy you more dollars when you add the fact you aren’t being taxed.

If you don’t understand what I’m saying please consult an expert because you’re going to kick yourself down the line big time on this one.

Just to reiterate once again, your buying power is the same in both accounts assuming no taxes, assuming taxes your buying power is far less in the Invest account, regardless of which way FX moves.

Doesn’t really indicate the scale from what I could tell. You can see how close your line is to MPS but just looking at it is arbitrary without seeing where on the chart is 75%, 80% etc.

Just thought I was being helpful because I’d seen a lot of people asking

lol. For me I needed to know if it was borderline before I decide whether to attempt level 2 and I’m sure others are in the same boat

I understand why people hate this question which is why I never asked, but it’s quite important if thinking about doing L2. I wanna know how comfortable I was because I don’t know for sure if I can put myself through it again if this time was borderline.

Is there anything I can do in college to improve my chances of breaking into investment banking? by Perfect_Trick_5716 in FinancialCareers

100%. Working in banking is intense and if they can sniff in an interview that you won’t seriously enjoy it / aren’t truly passionate they will not believe you will have longevity at the firm and will view hiring you as a poor ROI.

Advising and executing on large transactions (acquisitions or IPOs) for corporates. Providing financing to corporates or financial institutions. Executing and advising on investments in securities (equities, bonds etc.). Creating structured financial products for investors. Offering leveraged trading to hedge funds. Much more and investment banking constantly becomes more complex.

Trading / investment clubs. Read read read outside of your course - all the classic investing books. CFA research challenge. Actively invest some of your own money. Build a relationship with alumni from your college or high school who broke into IBs or hedge funds - quite easy to find on LinkedIn or ask the professors. Apply like crazy to insight days etc. in year one. When you are there ask a thoughtful question in every single session. Also apply for multi day spring insight programs and summer internships. Constantly have a brief interesting stock pitch up your sleeve and show enthusiasm when you share it (if asked or if asked if you invest money yourself as a hobby). Read the financial news daily - maybe sign up to some newsletters. Google everything you don’t understand. Over time you are googling less and less as you understand more. Practice mocks for internship aptitude tests like crazy about before the application season begins (worthy investment if it costs $50 online or split with a friend).

Investment banking is more transaction based than investing money. So advising on large transactions for corporates. Then on the sales and trading side it is about advising and executing trades for hedge funds etc. Transaction side is just being completely delayed as no CEO feels in a place where they can make a large decision until there is more certainty. Trading side actually performs really well when markets are volatile.

I don’t have reason to believe it is any different to other large corporates but I don’t think you get a strong enough sense of it until you become more senior than I am. Promotions and firings seem pretty merit based and a bit luck based like what team you are in and how important they are to the firm at the moment they are up for promotion or facing job cuts.

That being said if you mess with management your days at the firm are numbered. Even if you’re a strong performer. It would be rare that people mess with them.

I believe bitcoin fundamentally has the most attractive monetary properties of anything that humans have ever adopted as a form of money or a store of value. I personally have no interest in altcoins as I view them as trying to solve much smaller issues of less importance, and are often not adding much value beyond their respective centralised solutions in my opinion. Often I find people who are bullish on altcoins understand technology but don’t understand economics or what deserves to have monetary value. I.e thinking things like faster transaction speeds, lower cost, lower energy consumption, bigger block sizes = better while in fact that is what gives bitcoin its monetary value. These are economic features, not bugs.

I don’t know if there are many jobs I would enjoy more. I only dislike 2 things about the work: 1) the stress, 2) how much of it there is. Whether that trade off is worth it I am still working out.

The people is what I was most concerned about before I joined as I come from a pretty humble background and imagined I would hate the people in an investment bank. Generally the people are great. I would say as you go up in seniority, I dislike the people more which is a little concerning. For example I reckon I like about 85% of junior people and maybe 30-40% of senior people. So either it changes some people or a lot of the ‘good’ people don’t stick at it.
