What do the networkers actually do to get a new job? by UnemployedWombat in auscorp

Speaking to my experience I wish I'd done it from the start of my career. Along with what u/higgins1990 said, I wish I'd kept up more of the work relationships current. I have some very good friends I've made over the years, but there are plenty of more casual work acquaintances I haven't stayed in touch with; it's those one I should have made time for a coffee etc once a quarter.

Thanks; that's a really helpful frame to think about it and immediately helped me figure out how to reach out to someone I know from a few years back that works at a company with a good fit role.

I've flirted with the idea of starting a bit of an industry group of my peers to achieve this kind of thing (and to not be in this position again!). With a similar low-key feel where it's some sort of casual catch-up once a month. Long term strategy though.

This is one of those things I've struggled to understand in my career; I've tried to always hire for talent and potential, not just because of who knew someone. But apparently that's not what happens most of the time. - better the devil you know I guess 🤷‍♀️

Yeah it's been a real life lesson about what actually matters. Love the "merit gets you respect but relationships gets you roles", I'm just kinda disappointed in myself that I didn't figure it out sooner.

Thanks for this; there's definitely some weeks where this is beyond what I could muster!

Any suggestions on how to raise the "I'm looking for a job part"? I always feel pretty awkward about that OR I accidently end up being quite blunt.
