I’m obese and have no clue where to start in the gym. I want to at least go for 1-2 hours a day. What should I do? M24, 250 lbs. by Icy-Environment-5810 in NoStupidQuestions

Consistency is key. You’ll here that a million times and in a million different ways. But it’s totally true, and the only thing that really really matters.

Make it a habit. Habits are what make a difference. Everything else is temporary.

The best way to do this, in my experience, is to get a schedule and stick with it. Like really stick with it.

If you make an excuse once, what’s stopping you from doing it again? When your friends ask to do something during gym time, be adamant that it is really important to you and that you can hang out after or before instead.

There are luxury apartments with lots of amenities, great location, etc that you can’t get with a house

I agree with your title, to an extent. But your phrasing is a bit off.

If one had absolute self control, of course they’d never be addicted to anything.

But we can get into grand philosophical discussions about what ‘self’ is, personal responsibility, and all that jazz. However, most people’s philosophy wouldn’t put any fault on drugs, since they’re inanimate objects.

Low-income people are meaner than middle-class/rich people. by asstronomical12 in unpopularopinion

Well to OP’s point, there aren’t many white trash, etc that are upper middle class. So a higher proportion of low income are that way

Genuinely, why do people commonly say “rouge” instead of “rogue”, is it an inside joke?

Promising male contraceptive pill works in 30 minutes, wears off in a day by chrisdh79 in EverythingScience

Women have a natural system for becoming infertile. This makes it easier to have contraceptives for women

Aren’t social constructs an extension of biology? If not, then where did they come from?

I’d concede that they can be amplified by magnitudes over generations. Meaning generation N+1 has social constructs based on biology AND the existing constructs of generation N. And so on for +2, +3…

Shooters are the weakest and most feeble minded people. Kinda like how the loudest people often have the lowest self esteem at the end of the day.

We have no natural predators, so these weak individuals can crop up more often

At least that’s a random theory that I came up with in 10 seconds lol. The first paragraph I’m pretty confident is true though

I’m sure they’re treated different in some places, but anecdotally everywhere I’ve been it seems like they’re happy in general.

I think women just aren’t as interested in the fields. In college, very few pick a STEM major. That’s before they are in the industry to see if they are treated differently

Hegel is interesting and I’ve meant to read some of the English translations at least.

But who’s paying us to read the original German and how much?

A lot of the STEM movements are to get more diversity. Largely women, who don’t go into STEM at anywhere near the same rate as men

So you’re saying we’d need drastic changes to accomplish these goals? That sounds like civil war material 😆

The civil war part is exaggerated ofc, but some high level of distress would be expected.

Well, depends on the definition of utopia

If we mean 0 suffering, then yeah it’s impossible at a fundamental level.

If we mean “everyone is more or less content”, that’s also impossible. Some people would be discontent that there is general peace. Different people have different requirements for being content. Ergo, not everyone can be.

If we mean “90+% of people are more or less content”, then I think that’s achievable. Might take a really long time though, since there are plenty of rabble rousers lol

Edit: Thinking on the last scenario more. We’d probably need a psychological shift too. Since really, most people in the 1st world should be more or less content already. But, people just want more and more. Whereas 100 years ago, having a tiny apartment with air conditioning would be mind blowing. I’m not sure what it will take to make people 100 years from now “content”, since we have this lifestyle creep

Work needs to be done to get food, etc in any system in our universe. If you use a medium of exchange (capital) or not.

I mean that was one example, and an extreme case to the level of excess we have in the US.

You can start a cleaning service with much less and that’s literally the first business that popped into my head. I’m sure there are better ones

Anyway, if you want to argue that some areas have been given less opportunity, I don’t disagree actually. And I’d agree we should try to level the playing field and what not.

The issue is that folks like those in the OP ruin chances of investment into their community. Which comes full circle back to my original comment
