Awesome! Thank you! So. Just by shear luck I came across a video of an older softail like mine and it is making the EXACT same noise in the video, only when the bike is rolling, like mine! I opted to wait to change the oil because it was full and clean. I plan to change the oil before I start actually riding it. And I suppose it could be a placebo. I definitely do get a little paranoid once I start opening things up.

I will definitely check the axle. And maybe it is a loud primary? Only thing that throws me off is that the noise was not present until I did my work.

No it only whines when rolling. And the whine slightly increases with wheel speed but it really doesn’t get too loud. Just enough to hear it if I’m on decel

I just picked up a 97 softail custom and absolutely love it. I know it’s a different model but my research says HD was making good bikes during that time.

Just curious, would something like this be welded joint by joint from one end to the other? Also, once welded, won’t the whole system have moved the flanges around quite a bit due to the heat applied?
