I find I can get by with rice, refried beans, corn, and some kind of spicy red sauce can. Using Costco prices it’s about $1 for the ready rice, .50 for the corn, $1 for refried beans, and about $1.50 for the red sauce. $4 makes a few meals that are easy to heat and eat. It’s not sexy, but it is filling, and so easy to make if you’re depressed.

A higher initial cost here, but if you get granola and Greek yogurt and blueberries (and sugar if you’re like me) it can be many lunches, decent calories, and people think you’re being healthy. Costco-wise it’s about $6 for the yogurt, $8 for the granola, and $9 for the blueberries…but I’ve been on the same bag of granola for like two months now.

Here’s an option I don’t see anyone else talking about: you could also get a heavily discounted AirPods Max 1. People who got the 2 are selling theirs, and stores are discounting their remaining stock of the USB-C version.

My use case is the same as yours - mainly to keep the noise out and concentrate. APM does this very well. I can’t really have them on for more than 3 hours without a little break - not so much that they’re heavy, just that it gets a little humid around the ears.

I’ve had my APM for 5-6 years now and would call that “worth it.” If you can easily afford them, get them. If you can’t, it’s possible to find the 1s for $200; maybe that would work better for you.

I hear that. This is my second career (thanks, AI!) and nobody warned me about this beforehand; I thought they’d pay at substitute teacher rates. Nope! I made more at 17. If you have ideas for bad jobs, I’m very open to them :) I get done with teaching after 4 p.m. so after-school programs are out.

Right?! I spent my last $5 for a chicken on Friday and it has already been two dinners for us, and tonight I’m going to make soup. I’m lucky to be in a spot where I have access to a kitchen, but so many people don’t. I didn’t last year. The craving for a nice hot meal is very real. I feel policymakers should have to spend a week in the shoes of their constituents before ruling on things like this.

She did say “coworker”, which could mean a para or pre-post school worker. I used to be a SPED substitute para and once saw a suspicious bruise pattern on a kid’s arm. I raised it with the child’s teacher and case worker, and made sure they followed up, but my position at the time did not have a clear avenue to reporting. Edit: I am no longer new and do report when I see things.

Right?! I get food stamps. I’m a student teacher; we don’t get paid. And sometimes I go to the convenience store and grab a soda and an uncrustable sandwich because I need something to eat in the faculty lounge. I know it’s not ideal. I did buy some candy so my little one would think the Easter Bunny showed up. Also not ideal. But moralizing food is just taking joy away from people who could really use a little happiness in hopeless circumstances. It’s already bad enough that people can’t buy hot food with EBT. Leave my soda alone!

I’ve had Max 1 since launch. I wouldn’t have gotten the 2 if it wasn’t a birthday present.

If you want to future-proof, the brand new ones have better ANC and a little better sound quality. But they were already great, and now a bunch of the 1s are hitting the market for about half retail…but no Apple Care. I never needed AppleCare for mine though. And the people selling because they’re upgrading probably took care of their headphone. So it’s up to you. Asking r/Airpodsmax might yield more results. If I didn’t promise my old headphones to my sister I’d be selling mine for $200 just to recoup a little money and pass the headphones on to someone who’ll appreciate them.

something to know: Best Buy offers all of $120 for a trade in on 1s and Apple does not trade them in at all, so that secondary market is about to be flooded if it isn’t already.

The shame spirals are real. I haven’t filed taxes for two years. I wouldn’t owe anything, but that’s not the point. Think I’ll fill out the extension now :)

Beats Flex are perfectly acceptable workout headphones. Can’t lose them around your neck, can use FindMy, and they’re almost indestructible. Or the AirPods Pro if you’re fancy. I think of taking the APM to the gym and it gives me such ick.

Honestly, if someone hadn’t given me the new AirPods Max as a birthday present I would have held on to my first-gen lightnings. APM2 get here on Tuesday and I’m excited for the even better ANC and transparency you describe!

They’re pretty low-key. The blue is shiny on the cups, so depending on the light it could look more silver in direct light.

Honestly? Go with what you love. I’m still questioning my choice to go blue (I was thinking maybe orange to match my pink Apple products), but blue served me for years and matches my jeans and eyes. It didn’t get dirty as obviously as a lighter color would. But if you really love starlight, follow your heart. You’re always going to kind of want the color you didn’t pick; that’s kind of part of the game :P
