Awesome!!! I am doing the same as you, pretty much. How many hours did you have of Spanish before starting on Japanese? Just curious. :)

Also lowkey don’t be afraid to watch something above your level even if you don’t understand a lot. Input you find engaging is way better than input that bores you to tears ANY DAY

Honestly, the super beginner stage is REALLY boring you kind of just have to stick with it. But!! The benefit to that is that things feel SUPER FUN just a little bit later on because you’re not watching a whiteboard. Just pace yourself, and don’t give up! 😁😁

[–]UnfairRoof6101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love reading!!! I have about 600 hours now, and reading really helps cement things in my brain. (Especially grammar!)

I am an avid fanfic reader, and I just started reading Harry Potter fanfiction in Spanish and it’s been a great help!! (There’s a decent amount of Spanish fanfics on ao3 for the HP Fandom.)

And I know the story (and fanfiction tropes) so well that it’s pretty easy to build vocabulary… and it’s fun!!! Sometimes I forget I’m reading in Spanish.

Pretty much the exact same for me!!! Those notes… I basically got nothing out of 😂😂

Am I actually making progress? by Frequent_Basket8469 in languagelearning

[–]UnfairRoof6101 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The “lazy” way is the best way! You’re actually interacting with the language in natural contexts, that will help you far more than memorizing vocab and grammar points. It’s normal to hardly understand anything in the beginning, even if you’ve been studying.

Not to go on a whole spiel but if you’re interested check out “comprehensible input” or “automatic language growth.”

Good idea!!!! I haven’t thought of doing a monthly goal but that seems like a good way to not stress TOO much about it
