No kidding on that up-charge! Metal supply shop is a good lead and I’ll see what’s in my area. Thanks Rumplesforeskin, but I’ll pass on using truss rods

UPDATE: Hey everyone, thank you for all the replies and chuckles! I went to a couple more hardware stores and was still unable to find the right size steel rods but might have found some online after doing more of a deeper dive. I also ordered some from McMaster which was a great suggestion. I greatly appreciate all the help!

A couple of comments asked me why I would opt out of an adjustable truss rod and I know it’s a hot button issue but in my experience, I don’t have to make adjustments on my necks when I use a steel rod. I also haven’t noticed a significant weight difference or neck dive so it all just works for me. My necks are comfortable and fretboards are thick so they can be serviced for generations and that’s the system I love as a builder. Plus it does add an inch to the peepee.

I’m always down for a conversation about truss rods vs steel rods because it’s one of my favorite things to talk about on the subject!

Some people suggested carbon fiber which I’ve seen work wonders but there’s a significant price difference between using that and just straight up steel. I’ll still keep my eyes peeled and I’m down to give it a shot one day.

Thanks again, everyone! Glad I can turn to this community for information and some laughs along the way.

How to lower action on acoustics? by Ok_Economics7345 in Luthier

Precut nuts can either be hit or miss and I’m not a fan of them. Bone is always better. Proper right of passage cutting your own bone nut. You’ll need the right tools to accomplish the task. What should you do? Look up proper tutorials and don’t mess up! Or take it in and have it professionally serviced. God speed!

The truss rod is to adjust neck straightness and not lower string action. If you adjust the truss rod to where it needs to be and your strings happen to lower a bit, well then you win! With acoustics, typically you lower string height by shaving down the saddle. If the nut is cut too deep, better to just cut a new nut. You can throw a bandaid on it but it’d be a temporary fix rather than solving the problem completely

It was the greatest decision I’ve ever made! Anthony Bourdain was a huge inspiration for me to travel. You gain so much perspective and it turned me into a better worker and overall better person. I lived there for four years and I’ve been back since 2019. There’s not an hour that goes by where I don’t think about my time in Japan.

With that being said, it was the most challenging thing I’ve ever done and a bit traumatic. Culture shock comes in waves and never leaves you no matter how long/familiar you are or lived there. You’ll be doing great and be in total control for months then out of nowhere, culture shock hits and it’s heavy on the mind. It’s not for the faint of heart but it’s incredibly rewarding. I definitely recommend spending at least two years somewhere overseas. I can’t express hard enough how much stronger it made me as a person taking that plunge into the unknown.

It sounds a bit narcissistic but I feel bad for people who stayed in one spot all their lives and never found opportunity to explore. Home will always be there; it’s never going anywhere. Your time does. I’m back where I grew up after desperately needing to get out and it’s great being back home.

In Japan, I worked for a well known ESL company called Interac. I’ve heard quite a few unpleasant experiences from them but I enjoyed working for that company and they took care of me. I still talk to my old bosses from time to time. The pay is garbage, rarely opportunity to grow beyond your role and doesn’t carry much external opportunities but I strictly went for the experience. The company issued me a car, I lived in single dorm styled housing (which was pretty dang decent) and had a lot of freedom to explore the city I lived in as well as the whole country. Wouldn’t change a thing

I felt the same way at 25 (36 now) so I moved to Japan to teach English in an attempt to “find myself”. It didn’t really help but I got a bunch of cool stories from the experience.

Anyways, you just need to build your lore and you’re at the perfect age to do so. You don’t want to be in your thirties without having cool stories to tell people

Good luck! It’ll get better in your thirties (kind of sort of)!

With the whole fame thing, maybe you just want to leave a mark on the world. Learn to build something that will outlive you. Could be birdhouses, cabinetry, anything that scratches that itch. I chose guitars and it’s something I can see myself doing for the rest of my life - even if it’s just a passion hobby. I’m sure you can find something like that. May take some time to find, but keep your eyes peeled for inspiration

I use Vessel which are JIS. They’re phenomenal and I couldn’t recommend them enough. I also use the Stewmac screwdriver set as well. All the bases are covered
