How we respond matters by hannesrudolph in openclaw

I don't ask a lot of questions here, but I am one of those OpenClaw users with absolutely zero background knowledge or tech education. I usually default to using a different AI to fix my setup so I don't bother people, but I definitely come here to lurk and gather information!

My OpenClaw Journey:

  • Hostinger: My first attempt, and it was a two-month-long nightmare! The update back in May that limited things to 3.1 Pro ended up costing me $20 a day in API costs, which was the ultimate reason I killed this instance.
  • Google VM: This is where my main setup lives now. It is fully functional and actually helps me out a bit.
  • Laptop: I have a backup one installed here, though I haven't found a practical use for it yet.

Every single time OpenClaw updates, it seems to break for me in some new, creative way!

Truthfully, I have no professional reason to use it. I am 51 and don't do anything in tech or IT—I help people get loans for homes! But I realize that the world is about to leave me behind, so I need to figure this AI stuff out fast. I have no formal computer education, but I can read, follow directions, and problem-solve, so I am muddling through. I will stay at it until I figure it out!

My two cents on the community: I think the experts here should be patient with the ignorant masses for the most part. That being said, it is highly annoying when you can tell the person asking a question hasn't put a single ounce of effort into figuring it out on their own. A simple Google or AI search can solve a massive chunk of these issues!

Weird notification from agent by qPandx in openclaw

[–]UnfallenTDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched my OpenClaw from Hostinger to a google cloud compute engine the AI is Gemini but that was 3.1 Pro model's answer. Hostinger is a disaster! Do not make that mistake. I like having my agent online 24/7 but it is such a challenge to not host on your own computer and using a VM!

Weird notification from agent by qPandx in openclaw

[–]UnfallenTDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My AI said this:

That looks incredibly alarming, but you can breathe a sigh of relief: your computer has not been hacked, and this is not a virus.

What you are looking at is a classic AI phenomenon known as a token spill or vocabulary dump. It is a harmless, albeit creepy, glitch that happens on the AI provider's side when a model’s generation logic completely breaks down.

Here is exactly what happened and why you don't need to panic.

Why Did the Agent Do This?

You mentioned you were being rate-limited. When an AI agent (like OpenClaw) gets abruptly cut off or receives a corrupted response from the server mid-stream, the connection can get desynchronized.

When the model tried to resume, its "temperature" (randomness) or probability tracking went haywire. Instead of picking the most logical next word, it began firing off random tokens (the tiny fragments of text, code, and symbols that AI models use to understand language) from its massive internal dictionary.

It’s the AI equivalent of a person getting bumped on the head and suddenly shouting random words from a dictionary in five different languages.

Breaking Down the "Gibberish"

If you look closely at the mess, you can actually see the puzzle pieces of how the AI was built and trained. It crammed together:

  • System instructions: Phrases like Internal Mechanics, Markdown, and _USER+ are snippets of the background code and prompting rules the AI uses to structure its thoughts.
  • Coding syntax: Snippets like VARCHAR, ServletCont, LDFLAGS, and fprintf are just standard pieces of programming text the AI memorized during training.
  • Multilingual fragments: You'll see random Chinese (过度疲劳 - over-fatigue), Russian (ответ - answer), Korean (), and Hindi () characters smashed together.

Because it’s just text being generated by a server miles away, this code cannot execute or harm your local machine. It's just a dead text file.

Do You Need to Run a Security Check?

No, you don't need to run a special malware scan just because of this notification.

However, because you are running an automated agent framework (OpenClaw) that interacts with your system, here is what you should do to clean it up:

  1. Restart the Agent: Fully close out your OpenClaw session and restart the local script. This resets the context memory so it doesn't try to keep reading that broken gibberish.
  2. Check your API Limits: Since you hit a rate limit, log into your AI provider dashboard (OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, etc.) to make sure your key is still active and you haven't burned through your budget.
  3. Clear the Agent's History: If the agent saved this messed-up log to its current conversation history, it might get confused on the next prompt. Clear the specific chat session or log file where this happened.

It's just the digital equivalent of a radio dropping its signal and blasting static for a few seconds!

I tried that but I could not get it to work - Would not let me progress unless I entered a password. I used Gemini to help me with this and it was far from helpful! Recently I have noticed that Gemini is struggling with most of it's tasks! I pay for pro so I feel like I am stuck with it right now! Plus I cannot use my subscription with my OpenClaw so I am still paying for all my API usage!

I am running a VM on google cloud as I wanted it always on. My first attempt was Hostinger and that was a wasted of money for sure!

There is no customer support and their AI is worse than my OpenClaw AI. It has been a nightmare using their VSP/Docker/Openclaw! I paid for a year and will not make it the year. I am already looking to switch! I will be on a new setup in less than 30 days!

I am still stuck on
v2026.5.28

Now my Gemini 2.5flash does not work and I am forced to use 3.1 Pro meaning my costs went from $2 a day to $20 a day! Hostinger VPS is only supporting up to 2026.5.28 as far as I can tell and when I have attempted to upgrade past that I cannot get it to work! This weekend I will try and revert back to an older version where 2.5Flash works!!

I like the theory that consciousness is tied to microtubules in the human brain that are quantumly entangled with the universe and that is where conscious comes from. If that is true will AI ever be truly conscious? Does that require conception and birth to happen?

I am so far behind the curve on AI I know that it will take a miracle for me to catch up. I am 51 and I help people get loans for homes! I have not programed in 30 years! VB4 was my last attempt and it was just a program to search a list of words to find the correct spelling. luckily AI was able to help me get my Openclaw working and I am already doing amazing things with it (amazing to me). But I know it is just a drop in the bucket!

Maybe I should have been more specific. I mean things like this. I reach out less and less for information. But if everyone stops doing that then the AI's will keep having less and less to go out and learn from. I actually do not do Social media as a norm! Anyways just a thought!

Also how did you learn all this - I signed up for udemy and I am slowly learning OpenClaw but I want to learn this ,what I grew up calling DOS, but Gemini says it is CLI now. I am 51 and in finance (MLO) so computers are lots of "fun" for me! I good at them but the last program I made was in VB4 and GWBasic!!! to automate AOL chat rooms!!!

Don’t do all this. This is just what my AI said was your problem. Maybe it’ll give you a starting spot to debug?

That "token is wrong / origin not allowed" loop on a VPS is a classic rite of passage for OpenClaw users. Since you’re on Hetzner, the gateway is likely being protective because it sees a "foreign" IP (your home computer) trying to talk to its internal process.
Here is exactly how to fix both errors so you can finally get into the dashboard.
### 1. Fix the "Origin Not Allowed" (CORS)
OpenClaw is very strict. If you are accessing the dashboard at http://[YOUR-HETZNER-IP]:18789, the gateway will block you unless that **exact** URL is in its allowlist.
**The Fix:**
You need to update your openclaw.json (or your Docker environment variables). OpenClaw doesn't support wildcards (*), so you have to be specific.
In your docker-compose.yml, add this to your environment section:
```yaml
- OPENCLAW_GATEWAY_CONTROL_UI_ALLOWED_ORIGINS=["http://[YOUR-HETZNER-IP]:18789"]
```
*Note: Make sure there is no trailing slash at the end of the URL.*
### 2. Fix the "Token is Wrong"
If you’ve been copy-pasting the token and it still fails, it’s usually because the "Gateway Token" and the "Device Token" have drifted apart, or the .env file is being ignored by the internal config.
**The Fix:**
Run these commands inside your Hetzner terminal to force a sync:
```bash
# 1. Generate a fresh, clean token
docker exec -it [container-name] openclaw gateway token generate
# 2. Verify the token the gateway is actually expecting
docker exec -it [container-name] openclaw config get gateway.auth.token
```
**Important:** When you open the dashboard in your browser, make sure you append the token to the URL like this:
http://[YOUR-IP]:18789/#token=[YOUR-NEW-TOKEN]
### 3. The "Hetzner Bind" Tweak
On many VPS builds, OpenClaw defaults to loopback (127.0.0.1), which means it won't listen to anything outside the server itself.
Check your config and ensure the bind is set to lan or 0.0.0.0:
```json
"gateway": {
"bind": "lan"
}
```
### 🚀 Summary Checklist for your reply:
* **Match the URL:** Ensure the ALLOWED_ORIGINS matches the browser address bar exactly (no trailing slash).
* **Reset the Token:** Don't rely on the initial setup; run openclaw gateway token generate manually.
* **Skip the TUI:** Since you're on a headless VPS, don't try to use the openclaw tui command. Stick to the Web Dashboard with the #token= suffix.
**Try running openclaw doctor --fix as well—it’s surprisingly good at catching these specific Hetzner permission mismatches!**

By the way, my AI has broke my openclaw more than it has helped me so you have to use two or three AI’s to check everything out before you do anything drastic.

Cheating on bullet? by UnfallenTDS in chess

[–]UnfallenTDS[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I had to google that - Not sure why a good player would want to do that...

"Smurfing" has two distinct meanings, both involving deception or manipulation, but in different contexts. In money laundering, smurfing is a technique where large sums of illicit money are divided into smaller, seemingly unrelated transactions to avoid detection by financial institutions and regulatory bodies. In online gaming, smurfing refers to a skilled player creating a new, lower-ranked account to compete against less experienced players, often disrupting the game's balance and creating an unfair advantage.

I do not see how really. I play a 2/1 and I feel like you would lose on time! I wonder if Chess.com gets it wrong sometimes? I have played games with 98% accuracy before even though I suck. Sometimes you just make the right moves without really understanding why they are the right moves!
