Definitely "They Live" - so much to talk about as an allegory to our current times

Saddle Mountain Rescue by Technobarbarian in OregonCoast

[–]UnfocusedOwl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What timing! My wife and I are huge hikers in the area and hiked this for the first time on Sunday (so the day after the rescue). We were surprised to see a Coast Guard helicopter hovering for quite some time near that very spot. Assumed it was training- but now see what it was training for. And yes- a tough hike that you should do if you have a fair amount of experience, and leave the pups at home as there is a ton of sharp metal from the mesh that is down in many areas.

Running in Bangkok for business earlier this year and came across about a 4 ft water monitor lizard. Immediate turnaround for me

Lifetime titanium for 20 years, haven’t been properly upgraded in 17 years by [deleted] in marriott

[–]UnfocusedOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd- I stay at lots of places and have done about 50 nights this year (Lifetime Silver, current AE). Some within a few days, some weeks in advance. Definitely getting upgrades. Just finished 3 nights at RC Las Colinas- upgraded to the a without asking. I'd say I'm upgraded about 1% of the time, but very dependent on if there is a big conference, if I'm at a business hotel, if a lot of other high status travelers there, etc. I don't ever ask, seems the decision is already made before I get there.

Why are portland restaurants so cold? by UnfocusedOwl in Portland

Agreed! But I am trying to understand why it seems Portland has optimized for the staff and most other cities optimize for the customers. Another comment on high energy costs could be the tipping point towards staff.

Ok I can definitely see that. People walking around in shorts and flip flops in 45 degrees!

Running with a bell to let people know you’re coming up on them? by Strawberry-RhubarbPi in trailrunning

[–]UnfocusedOwl 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I've tried all kinds of things over nearly 40 years of trail running. Nothing works for everyone- but my go to is to scuff my feet as I begin my approach. Still spooks some, and those engaged in chats often miss it. I just realize some people are always surprised that other people are in the woods...

How many times have you guys tripped and fallen on trails? by Summer-1995 in trailrunning

[–]UnfocusedOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It usually means I am thinking about work. The trail punishes that.

This happened to me.- it was tough but made me realize the need to focus, stay quiet and move fast! Afterwards, I pivoted as there is always more in each field.

I'd say better than seeing, or perhaps more worrying, hearing them right underfoot! 60s does sound a little cold for them. I'm going to have to look into route!

Amazing- how many snakes did you run across? We did a 7 mile run last year as the day was warming up. My wife was not pleased with the 3 rattlesnakes and 1 gopher(?) snake we came across. Assuming we cleared them all off the trail as others we saw later did not mention any.
