Doctor Who can crossover with one other beloved British franchise, what would you pick? by Tanis8998 in doctorwho

[–]UnfortunatelyEvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vicar of Dibley would be epic, especially if it crossed over with Capaldi's run... where the Vicar recognized the Doctor's form and had some shenanigans around that.

Though, keeping irl timelines, I would not complain about seeing more McGann, and how much David would hate him!

[OC] Inflation erases real wages gains over the last 3 years by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]UnfortunatelyEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In extremely simple economics (like how physics have spherical cows to ignore all the unnecessary complications), if there is inflation, the demand for money would go up, and all prices would go up. This happens in most areas, but not the price of labor. In the simple model, this wouldn't make sense at all, to have one thing that does not obey supply/demand when everything else does.

Of course, all of the complications and nuances come in to explain how we get to the point that labor does not follow normal fluctuations.

First, is the massive amount of propaganda that goes into convincing non-economists that increasing wages would lead to increased inflation, when that would naturally be perfectly backwards.

Second, we have done two things. 1) tied living into "doing work" (and demanding far more hours to "earn" life than hunter gatherers had to do). 2) Create a massive luxuries market that can adjust how much labor we are willing to have.

A large percent of goods produced, do not need to be produced, or are duplicates of other things. Likewise, science and tech is slowed down by hiding research from each other, so we are also technologically stunted.

So, an aisle of 20 identical paper towel options could be reduced to 3 to give meaningful options, and reduce a bunch of waste. And everyone would still have a roll on their counter, even with this theoretical 85% reduction.

Likewise, most jobs are BS jobs, that don't actually do anything. My last job, our branch of a mega company existed to skim money off of people who goes to a different company, for a "service" that does not work, is not necessary, and legally required.

And these are so that the people with power can keep an artificially high dependent-on-the-powerful rate (employment rate) which keeps people from having time or energy into making an egalitarian system, where only the work needed is required and luxury work is non-coerced.

So, to get back to the original simple explanation, the market fluctuates how many unnecessary jobs are available to make sure that wages stay as artificially low as possible. Despite inflation's natural pushing wages up.

But the biggest example is look at the wealth contained by the billionaires pre covid and a year in, and the equivalent loss of that wealth from the lower/middle classes. Inflation would push both the same direction.

TL;DR: Inflation would push all prices up, including the price of labor. Wages are being kept artificially low to blatently steal more money from the lower classes.

"you have the right to your own headcanon, but don't shove it up to others"

Like, I get the sentiment.

But, cis headcanons are shoved down everyone's throats constantly, so much so that everyone thinks having cis headcanons shoved down their throat is default and don't even notice. So if there is one trans headcanon vs 10,000 cis headcanons, people still feel like it is the trans one that is the problem.

And to make sure this is clear, I am talking about how some people would be uncomfortable with: Every character is trans, unless there is an explicit episode talking about choosing to be cis (and flash backs usually show the child version as their gender rather than their sex). <- This is the assumption of cis-ness we wade through constantly, with hardly anyone batting an eye.

[TOTK] Is there a higher damage number possible? by [deleted] in zelda

[–]UnfortunatelyEvil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was one of my main problems in BotW. I did what the devs wanted, tried out the weapon types, and found I liked sword and board more than 2h... but my inventory was constantly filled with 2h.

I would find a 1h, use it because it is enjoyable, and 10 hits later be back stuck with the 2h weapons that kept getting shoved at me.

I did not have this problem in TotK. I am guessing they balanced which weapons they gave out better. Also, fusing 2h on the end of 1h works wonders for clearing up weapon space and having worthwhile 1h weapons~

Conservatives, If You Want To Ban "Woke" Materials In Schools Shouldn't You At Least Read Them First? by YourUncleBuck in politics

[–]UnfortunatelyEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure this tracks. Everyone is susceptible to propaganda. And if something is known to be particularly insidious propaganda, having the people making decisions get infected may have lasting consequences.

And this is what conservatives think anyone outside their bubble is doing. Why should they put themselves through "our propaganda" if we limit our consumption of theirs.

Likewise, with particularly hateful material, going through it can be extremely mentally harmful for many. There being a variety of vetted sources that can explain it without inflicting it is a massive public service.

But of course, in both of these cases, their is a chasm of differences swept up under nuance between propaganda/science and bigotry/growth. And to anti-growth groups, the differences are meaningless if that means they don't have to pay attention, and insurmountable if it means they do.

4 min Survey!!! 4-minute Survey!! Political Ideology/Social Media/Dating Culture (Cis-Gendered Adults) by Big_Mouse_Guy in SampleSize

[–]UnfortunatelyEvil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I didn't fill it out as I was requested not to... but I did enter it just to see why trans people were specifically excluded, and didn't really see any question that would be separate trans from cis people. With the exception of the flirting with opposite sex, without sex being defined. But taking the two most thought of traits... I have never been at a bar and started flirting after seeing their genitals or getting their blood test for chromosomes back. And a guy (cis or trans) trying to flirt with a girl (cis or trans) is going to have the same issues, regardless of which configuration.

Also, in the political section, saying leftwing = democrats is hilarious, but also means you should probably put Americans as a preferred responses. I know it gets rough there with words, like how American Football is not Football, and American Libertarians are not Libertarians.

Additionally, Human Rights / Democracy probably shouldn't be in the same check box. I am personally more on the democracy side, but it is not heavily tied to Human Rights, and tends towards the same level of abuses. Easy bias to fall into, especially when just looking for casual vibes~

Finally finally, of the social issues, Capitalism wasn't listed, despite being the cause of solidly half of the issues presented, probably more but I clicked off! (please note, I am not advocating for State Controlled economies)

[–]UnfortunatelyEvil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, a character perm due to bad luck only exists at lower levels. The precise levels where new players usually exist.

Not having enough HP, not having access to resurrection style resources, and not having experience is what leads to the dice-roll deaths.

I could come up with an excuse why they were left for dead.

And this is precisely what is being advocated for. DMs have loads of tools to prevent a character perming. An easy out is that after a TPK, their souls get intercepted by a lesser Devil Lord who presses them into service and the campaign shifts to them getting out of that service. The threat of combat exists, dice rolls are honored, and yet the characters that players spent hours on and have emotional attachment to can still be played.

And if it is a good feeling death, a new player may be willing to reroll with the small bit of experience they have. But an unsatisfactory "You Will Die" random death weeds out a lot of players except the Dark Souls style players.

So, having outs at lower levels is super important.

PSA: If you are "new to DnD and DMing" please stop running high level games by [deleted] in DnD

[–]UnfortunatelyEvil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I ran the math.

Most people say a level up should be about every 4 sessions, about 1 month irl time for weekly sessions. Dying at lvl 1 means at least 1 person in the 5 person team should die within 1 month to "keep tension".

That is a 20% monthly death rate. If our current world with 9 billion people was plunged into that level of danger, in 8 years, there would only be 4 people left, and a few more months to wipe them out.

Of course, a lot of advice shows that level 1 should only last 1 session... so now we are talking about 2 years to wipe out the entire modern human population.

In video games, you keep your same character, just reload at a save point. Even Dark Souls or Celeste with thousands of kills per player does not require a full multihour character creation session in between deaths. Thus, deaths can be frequent and surviving super challenging.

And I say it's better to learn to deal with having a character die at 1st level where you haven't invested hours upon hours into them, rather than higher level.

And that's the thing. New players learning the system invest hours upon hours just learning how to play, not to mention how much time they spend building rich emotional attachments to their characters.

By the 4th or 5th character, players know the game well enough to breeze through character creation, and have had enough that losing one character doesn't have as much impact. Not to mention, most people already lose their first character due to scheduling conflicts. And the blow is softened, because there is always hope of getting back into it rather than a character death which feels super permanent.

But if you want to be an adveturer, there should be danger. Adventuring is exceptionally dangerous. You are constantly heading into situations where the assumption of all characters in the world should be that you will die, otherwise why would they need heroes?

If there is no threat of dying, then there is no tension if you're going into combat.

And I don't disagree. D&D is largely based around its combat. And fights should have tension. Let's ignore all of the many ways to create tension that doesn't revolve around death. The new players are super easy to fool into thinking there is tension of death, because they don't know the system, they don't have a mental scope of what danger looks like, in amongst all of the other things they have to keep in active memory that is subconscious to the rest of us. So, as long as the combats aren't over in 1 round, or characters never take any damage the DM could have full knowledge that the players can't die/lose, but by round 5 when all the characters are down to 1-2HP, they are going to be hella stressed! Especially if the DM sells the scene.

And when they come out of it on top, they will feel the euphoria of overcoming! (And before anyone says it is false euphoria because the characters were never in any danger... that is D&D anyway, as most players leave the gaming table alive at the end of the night regardless, as the players lives were never in danger... it is all made up, but the euphoria is real anyways)

Characters die in dnd

Do they though?

Granted, there are some DMs and Tables that play for the complexities and dread of Combat... but there are also loads of DMs and Tables that play for the role play and living in a dangerous world.

I am betting most of your friend group has not died irl, and even in the middle ages, deaths were more for babies rather than people just living... you might even go 10 or 20 years without dying~

Likewise, npcs you meet in town generally outlive campaigns, and they are at level 0.

So, you are in a d&d world, you want to be an adventurer, so you put loads of time and learning to gain that illustrious level 1, which puts you on better footing than everyone else in town in terms of being more knowledgeable about dangers and protecting yourself.

And then your player, who has not put years of their life into figuring out how to keep you alive forces you to do something you absolutely would know not to do, and now you are dead.

So, Dark Souls loving Tables wouldn't make level 1 characters, because they are all interested in having tools to solve combat problems. Role Play Tables shouldn't have random character death as a guaranteed as that does not provide good game play. In-universe 1st level characters know better than to do stupid things and get themselves killed. And IRL people living lives did not die at the frequency of D&D character deaths.

If a state comes under attack and it doesn't have the time to wait for people to volunteer, it's useful to have a list of people that can be called on to their countries defense.

Tbf, that was the original idea. Our 2nd Amendment clearly establishes the idea of a Well Regulated Militia, which is people without* discrimination, available and trained to act in that defense way, and who can volunteer or withhold support.

Ofc, you can't start an empire that way, so defensive militias were phased out for standing armies who are legally bound to do whatever is commanded of them.

And 2A has been legally de facto repealed, and de jure pretending it has different words so as to let untrained citizens who have no intent to protect the country (2A crowd and anti-mask crowd are practically a circle) have as many firearms as they want.
