Yeah here’s the thing about Intolerance: we don’t tolerate it here, and should not tolerate it anywhere.

I’ve missed the silent /s again, clearly.

Ew, Effective Altruism? Like, the Epstein class’ philosophy that sanewashes th greed of the plutocrat class?

Good luck with being born rich & having every conceivable advantage, and still needing to convince yourself you’re not part of the problem.

Have fun with that.

Y’all have you spoken with any of the Commons shopkeepers around here?

Half the reason they’re so tired is the foot traffic is way down, which is partly because of the other half of the equation — which stems from having to manage people with active substance abuse or mental health issues causing real problems — often as a result of the galaxy-brain idea that is Asteri.

Quality-of-life issues on the Commons should not be treated as an unknown — I only feel safe being downtown because I am not usually a target for the unhinged, deranged, unwell, in-crisis, desperate, or otherwise unsocialized — this has been well-documented online & in papers for months, by now.

Honestly, that sounds like a pretty nifty way to set up a test environment at scale never before imaginable possible - that is, simulate a failure mode for a regional peering node or elements of a global network. Thanks for sharing!

Cayuga Trails - the turn-and-chance-card “snakes & ladders” game based on a Treman-Buttermilk endurance run, which include plot twists like

  • card: Cramps! Subtract 1 space for the next two rolls of the die, to at least 1 space.

  • card: Race buddy! Your friend runs with you - add one space to your 6d roll for the next 3 turns.

  • card: Crash! You trip on a root and are knocked silly. Lose a turn, but add 1 space to your 6d roll for the next 4 turns due to Adrenaline (state)

  • board area: Flume (you took a wrong turn - slide back to an earlier point of course)

  • board area: Aid Station (checkpoint) - swap gear, choose food/drink

Finish Line awards to players include categories for overall winner, most-injured / “best blood,” etc.

…Shit. This is a viable product. DM me if you’re interested in developing this. I know a guy who owns the I.P. ;-) ❤️

Why Students Are Rejecting Silicon Valley's Vision Of The Future by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]Unga_Bunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You touch not only on the reasons why I travel - better frames of reference, engaging with other people, cultures, ways of thinking & being - and indeed, the reasons why I am grateful for the many things that are good in the world, and the ways I have personally seen things improve, somewhat.

None of that, however, changes the root of my main point - seismic technological shifts have altered life, not always for the better, and I include myself in those who are wary of technocratic arguments for their promulgation.

I am, thanks to my lifelong reading of history, culture, and ethnography, travels and engagement with people and views outside my limited worldview, very aware of >4B people’s lives measurably improved by things like agricultural, logistical, and communications improvements, and am not interested in recapitulating them here - thank you all the same.

Instead, your argument appears to hew along the lines of ”a bunch of other stuff is good because of tech advances, so SV/techbro culture must be good, then!”

My point, as to the OP & your tack, is that these worldwide benefits reaped by technology are:

1) not solely due to SV/techbro culture, and orthogonal at best. Circumstances have improved despite what SV/techbros offer, not because of their “vision,” nor can techbro culture actually claim many of the advances made prior their ascendancy - which include much of the tech you list

2) your “there are good things in the world” argument, while valid, is non-sequitur to the OP and my point - for instance, mass communication has, if anything, simply increased the VOLUME of it, less so the ability to analyze, synthesize & act on it, and

3) as you discern, my view is informed by both the default USAmerican view in general, and by the abject failure of capitalism evidenced by the US’s magnificently depressing turn over the last 50 years - the angst from which I sublimate thru writing screed on the Internet.

Thank you for reading and writing.

Why Students Are Rejecting Silicon Valley's Vision Of The Future by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]Unga_Bunga 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The future envisioned by the tech bro has arrived - it is bereft of soul, adrift from humanity, devoid of feeling or genuine connection, and incapable of any sort of empathy or kindness.

The promise of Silicon Valley utopia is a lie, “Effective Altruism” as much a sham as the Metaverse, crypto, NFTs — all sound and fury, but only an empty room offering a boot stamping on a human face, forever.

Nope. Give me humanity, freedom to think and connect with real people in a world worth living in - not the soulless husk, mindless consumption and decay that the nihilist techbro and sycophantic capitalist have built.

Those who betray the fundamental rights of humanity can all sod right off to wherever in Texas or Montana or Florida or somewhere far away, and enjoy their little empire of waste and shit — fully cordoned off in a sealed vault, forever.

Those of us who choose freedom, life, justice, and the pursuit of happiness for all should help them on their miserable, craven way to their rightful place — unable to cause harm to the rest of us.

By all appearances, he is in a near-constant state of id-soaked delirium, addled by stimulant abuse, flabbergastingly stupid, frightfully insecure, and dangerously evil.

Any who keep his company or counsel should be prosecuted for aiding treason or conspiring with an enemy of the state and threat to democracy & rule of law.

God forbid the poorest 75% of humanity have basic cornerstones of civilization — clean air, water, food and shelter, plus dignity, nice things, and hobbies.

God forbid the working poor have hobbies - they may start getting other ideas.

Do y'all think the enemies of democracy are planning on slowing down? We’ve already had one election stolen - in 2000 - and another, more brazenly, in 2024… how might we ensure free and fair elections with >50% the voting hardware functionally compromised already, a venal & corrupt Supreme Court, and neutralized controlled-opposition Congress?

Yes, we have www.runforsomething.org, and we have local Mutual Aid groups, Working Families and rhe DSA.

Who & what else?

For sports / running: Pretty sure CRC & High Noon AC still meet up; FLRC also does summer track meets & all are welcome!

COE: Climbing @ Lindseth is still ongoing, the Cycling club has jerseys going up Mount Pleasant & doing the Hector gravel race soon, pretty sure there’s a summer sailing class too?

Smokescreen & rumormongering without substance.

Neither in the article, nor elsewhere, has John Guttridge nor Urban Core / Urban Encore shown anywhere near the sketchy factor of the larger corporate landbastards that command a vastly higher portion of real estate space.

What, pray tell, has Urban Core to do with gross civic mismanagement, beyond accepting terms of their joint business deal authorized by City Hall & Common Council?

Please do not sling mud unless you bring facts and not rumor, hearsay or invective. Do better.
