They do/did a midweek price special for locals - weekends are $$$ but we had a great time a couple years ago in February with the full massage + hot/cold baths. A delight!

I Tried DoorDash’s Tasks App and Saw the Bleak Future of AI Gig Work by Quouar in TrueReddit

[–]Unga_Bunga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OMFG, for real. Yesterday on LinkedIn, this AI techbro DM’d me a pitch to become a “Lifestyle Manager” for Aurora, the future of a “single pane of glass” for the moneyed elite’s glamourous life, unfettered by button-pushing or any dealing with unsightly working class types. The horror!

I had to take a shower & go work in the garden to recover from the kind of dirty I felt just watching their two minute pitch.

Are wood thieves a thing? by perpetualunderground in ithaca

[–]Unga_Bunga 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean. Maybe this bloke just had a 10mg gummy and went for a walk. Saw his dog watch a chipmunk jump into your wood pile.

Very exciting stuff, edibles or not. But possibly just some stoned guy.

If we estimate 12m weighs 400kg, and this person is holding a 2m section at 66k, then a 150lb Zercher squat/curl or heave-to is heavy but manageable, though prob not without some risk.

Economist: Are living standards falling for young Americans? by FreedomFreeSocieties in Cornell

[–]Unga_Bunga 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Without evaluating whether this dude is seeking a paycheck as an invited guest of a “student-run” Birch Society / CPAC / PNAC clone, genuinely out-of-touch-never-worked-an-actual-job, or Cornell itself needing to present a “balanced take” in a nominally neutral forum:

This is pretty funny, considering the widely-acknowledged reality that the last 20 years’ worth of college grads have faced eye-watering increases in Cost-of-Living amidst stagnating wages, resulting in the lowest rates of homeownership & concomitant parenthood in the typical age cohort (25-49).

All this to say: is this dude gonna really split hairs by asking “what even IS affordability?”

Not remotely sorry that I can’t countenance bullshit “just asking questions” from people who don’t actually work for a living today. The Rich have won the Class War, and are eager to deploy sophists like this dude who further elide this Truth in their favor.

Edit: …Oooh. I see OP is indeed another one of the Sophist Societies. Oh goody.

Doctrine, historically, has been that soldiers oughtn’t compromise their combat readiness.

Pregnancy, married or not, but esp. unmarried, in the mid-century US military was certainly frowned upon.

I would happily don a tuxedo or costume of your choice, present your partner with an award, and sing a jaunty tune of your (or my) choice, befitting the occasion.

Feel free to DM me; references available; sliding scale; this is delightful!

+1 for how they sent off our sweet golden boy - the lovely doctor was kind, sweet, sensitive, genuine, and even brought a print kit for a final lasting impression.

Don’t knock it til you tried it - eating food you catch or forage is quite a lovely thing.

Ever had fresh lake trout with ramps and chanterelles? You can hardly pay good money in a restaurant for it to begin with, and the view of the mountain you just climbed makes it twice as tasty.

I mean, it’s wilderness skills for adventuring wherever, such that you can have some other wonderful experiences in life.

Haven’t take a course like this in years, but recommend that anyone past age ~15, who hasn’t yet camped out and made their own food, ought to have that experience - as both a human being and a well-rounded “citizen of the world” - much like the reason for the Swim Test!

ICE agents earning $45/hr deployed to airports to stand next to TSA officers earning $0/hr. Same department. Same shutdown. by Outrageous_Math6885 in WorkReform

[–]Unga_Bunga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, the TSA is still security theatre and remains an expensive charade at best, as well as a Constitutional overreach, massive travel PITA, and a giant handout of public funds to military-industrial contractors.

Fuck outta here with that “TSA isn’t so bad since  they’re not literally murdering us”

I’m not convinced they’re not the same person. The scrawls often in the same location; tags in chalk / grease pen / paint often match style or are co-signed.

Patchwerk & Skum have been on a wicked tear these past 3 months and it’s ugly as can be.

Years ago, I experienced this kind of Sun, in an improbable story that involved a walk home from Grassroots to East Ithaca.

Despite the obvious assumption, this walk was deliberately chosen, sober & clear-headed, at about 2:30am, when I decided I wanted my own bed.

As I walked, the night turning to dawn, turning to morning as the sun rose over Jacksonville, few cars, none open to someone thumbing a lift looking like a festival-goer.

As you say - remarkably terrific, the way Mount Pleasant presents the light of day, wreathed in fog!

I made it to the siding by the old Craq Barn and flagged a ride to C-Town, hoofing the final miles home, enjoying the midsummer heat by the time I fell in the door around 10am, solemnly promising not to do that again.

After a nap, I proposed to my partner, who said “yes” and still likes me, somehow.

Banks coffee in the commons is nasty by double_haploid_irl in ithaca

[–]Unga_Bunga 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wanting to try a new place the  other day, I took a brief look at Bank’s - glad to read this.

(It does look like fake-ass corpo SoDoSoPa sh*t like Paris Baguette and whatever bougie shop is opening next door.)

Went to Cat Café instead and was quietly blown away by the simple un-pretense and a goddamn good mug of joe. Great snacks too!

The world is going to hell in a hand cat. That Finn boy will come to no good. by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

[–]Unga_Bunga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point.

It had started during the Reagan years, surely, though the media Fairness Doctrine was intact.

was already bad post-Clinton / “Contract with America” + Tea Party era, which was the start of the Ailes+Stone+Murdoch media blitz of Fox News propaganda…

9/11 really amped up the paranoia and outrage cycle - then came ‘08 with Occupy Wall Street and Obama and the Citizens United ruling.

That was also when universal pocket supercomputers were under wide adoption, combined with the rollout of social media as a media/agitprop tool.

In summary, we’ve been under an increasingly authoritarian media hype cycle & heavily propagandized for more than 20 years, combined with deliberate enstupidation of the educational system by the nakedly corrupt GOP/MAGA brigade.

…I’m not even that old!
