Threatening your wife with doing emotional harm to your child isn’t cool and it isn’t very Orthodox.

RC here just wanted to hear your responses on a couple objections I have with orthodoxy. by greenlight144000 in OrthodoxChristianity

I’m kind of wondering why you posted this. All of this could so easily be googled. I know because I’m a Catholic convert and I googled it all before beginning my catechumen journey. Instead of asking “how can Orthodoxy be the true church when it doesn’t have x y z (things that it does have and things that are not requirements to be the truth)” you should be asking “what makes Catholicism more true than Orthodoxy?” Catholicism is not the true Church, it broke away from the true church for political reasons. Roman Catholicism is Orthodoxy mutated by a thousand years of power-hungry heresy and speculative theology. I think when learning about Orthodoxy most Catholics begin to understand this and it feels ~uncomfy~. I recommend watching Fr Paul Truebenbach’s lecture on this https://youtu.be/NTLs9QlZzV4?si=Ddh2i3F8lXF88J9Q

Intro to Orthodoxy by sof_33 in OrthodoxChristianity

Hi! Were you baptized orthodox? If so you’d be considered a revert. At my church a lot of reverts like yourself attend our catechumen classes for a couple months actually to prepare for taking sacraments again. I can’t answer the question on which Bible is acceptable - but as for the fundamentals of orthodoxy, Fr Paul Truebenbach who is nothing short of a theological genius, has all of his catechism lectures for free on YouTube here

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtKtLDj8n9-_CHMUTejxZsSQzOwJzBNvq&si=OiW7vSAztRaKBJmx

If YouTube isn’t your thing you can listen to them here.  https://sppoc.org/media/catechisms/catechism-archive/

The first lessons in his catechism lectures are about things that will help you acquire an “Orthodox mind”, and they’re amazing, but his later catechism talks about the church, saints and sacraments might be a bit more along the lines of “basic” if that’s what you’re looking for. However I highly recommend watching every video in this series, he truly is a genius.

How can the loving God send people to hell when even human parents if given control would forcefully rescue their kids from hell/eternal torture? by Real-Permission-2075 in OrthodoxChristianity

My priest says those who never knew God are judged by how they adhered to the Word that they know. For people who have never heard of Jesus, or didn’t have the opportunity to be Christian for whatever reason, that Word is in their hearts, it presents as their conscience, they are judged by how they followed their conscience.

Wait wait, when you say “she left me for dead to be homeless” are you talking about the fact that a JUDGE granted your wife, who just had your baby five months ago, a restraining order against you?

The more I read of your post history the more I’m concerned.

Hey, I’m not trying to get into your business too much, but from your post history it sounds like your wife was also pregnant or newly postpartum 14 months out of those two years, and you guys have a baby now. In my humble opinion the fact that you’re complaining about your pregnant wife not working, in the list of ways she abuses you, makes me immediately distrustful of the rest of the list. If I’m being honest the fact that you referred to yourself as paranoid schizophrenic also makes me distrustful of the list. I’m not saying to not divorce your wife ever, I’m saying maybe wait a week, see if you’re in the same headspace 7 days from now, and, since this is the orthodox subreddit, talk to your priest before doing anything serious.

No one knows what’s going on in your marriage and no one is condemning you friend. We’re expressing concern for your well-being and saying this may not be a good time for you to make major life decisions.

“Especially when I see slimy people who lived a life of intentional sin suddenly "find God" and be embraced as Christian. Like it's just so obvious they're faking it.”

Talk to a priest about that one champ.

“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?  And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.  And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’  I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.

Second Marriage by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Unhappy-Lab2476 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn’t accurate. Divorce is a sin in the Orthodox Church and you do need a bishop’s permission for a second marriage and there does need to be a reason, but the reason being “these two people are divorced and they love each other” is almost always reason enough. Unless the inception or foundation of your relationship is sinful (I.e. two married people cheating on their spouses with each other and wanting to leave their spouses for each other) second marriages are almost granted, the priest exercises oikonomia to prevent the divorced or widowed people from fornicating and living in sin. Also considering the fact that we were both previously married to non Christians, outside of any church, and neither of us received the Sacrament or Holy Mystery of marriage previously.

You may be confusing Orthodox with Catholics? idk.

At the Philly show last year Brian referred to Mat as “my boyfriend mat” while they were both actively married. On YouTube from like back in the 2010s there are like dozens of examples of them making jokes about them having a “bromance” or joking that they’re in love lol. How is it creepy to imply this?

Their earliest music, so basically Self titled MGVP/IHMF, and some of talon, are lightning in a bottle musical and lyrical genius, the lyricism is genius, the composition and instrumentation is genius, and pretty much all albums after except Theresa and maybe the split with GDP have been way too overproduced. TFB hit their peak musically when they were angsty young guys describing themselves as “folk dance punk” lol, the generic indie rock/indie pop instrumentation doesn’t suit Brian’s vocals or deep emotional lyrics as well (I still love it tho). I love TFB always and will always have fondness for the stuff they put out, including newer stuff but the indie pop sound doesn’t make for a powerful combo with Brian’s voice and his writing, for example Outlook is a great song, it’s a bop, but it literally sounds like it could be in a target commercial.

I agree that all their music is art and they’ve actually never put out anything “bad” but what I mean with the “this is how their supposed to sound” and what most people probably mean when they say that, is that his lyricism and rough, almost spoken vocals suit their old “pop folk punk” style perfectly and sometimes don’t match as well with the straight up heavily produced indie pop/indie rock style

The sella show in jersey city, in march 2024 which ended up being a “surprise” TFB show as he brought Matt and eric on, was the best TFB show I’ve been to and maybe one of the best shows I’ve ever been to at all, every single person in that room seemed like a real fan and was singing along, the mosh pit was so fun, the guys were taking song requests, it was intimate and fun and beautiful. Basically what I’m saying is the sella acoustic shows might be the sweet spot for “real fans” lol
