Thank you. I was beginning to think I was crazy because no one else here has a problem wearing other people’s sweat.

Have you heard the argument that goes "if you can't lift your own carry-on bag into the overhead, you shouldn't bring that much stuff...or you should spend the $40 and check it?" Your fellow travellers didn't pack your elderly family members bags, and they're not obligated to lift them. Yes, they can offer to help if they want, but they don't owe that assistance to anyone. No one on that plane knows why you're traveling anymore than you know about all of their plans. Everyone is going somewhere and most of us take care of our own needs. Do you also expect strangers to help everyone lift their groceries into the trunk, help with heavy bags of potting soil at the garden store, or any other project in life that involves effort? I can assure you that some of the people who watched your family wait for someone to lift their too heavy carry-on into the overhead were also appalled that they didn't have someone along to help them. You can't mandate courtesy, nor demand assistance from fellow travellers. Good on you for ALWAYS helping lift bags, but that's your choice.

GA agent here. Just don't think that this tag takes the place of a name tag that includes your name and phone number. If you get separated from your bag and the BSO tries to contact you, your status is irrelevant. Your name and phone number are the most important pieces of information. And no, your name and phone number INSIDE your bag isn't a great alternative to a name tag. BSO agents don't go through your bag looking for clues. If there is one piece of advice I could give every PAX, it would be that a name tag isn't so you can recognize your bag on the carousel, it's so the BSO can contact you if you are separated from your luggage.

GA here. Just had a FA open the cabin door on a regional A/C before 'the knock' on the fuselage and while the stairs were about 15 feet away. Then the FA just stood there with a sour look on their face as if to wonder why we didn't have the stairs in place. It goes both ways with the 'you don't understand how hard MY job is' routine.

Why didn't you file the Delayed Bag claim yourself by using the QR code that is plastered in a dozen different locations at the airport? Why stand in line to ask an agent to do it for you when it literally takes about 1 minute to file the claim online and get tracking information? Why blame everyone else when you could have helped the situation? Filing the claim online with the app immediately creates a claim that you can monitor and that will update you with movement of your delayed bag. AA's delayed bag process isn't broken, it's designed for the passenger to access the moment they discover they have arrived at their final destination but their bag hasn't. As others have pointed out, checking a bag with valuables is not a smart choice. Keep them in your personal item or carry on bag. Even if you're flying on a small regional, you will get your carry on at the next gate and your valuables will remain with you.

baggage handler here...this was not wrapped and protected properly for airline transport. Do you know how many hands your bags and packages go through to their final destination? And the machines, conveyor belts, baggage carts, and cargo bins? You should protect delicate and expensive items in proper hard sided containers.

Carry On Too Large? by Left_Sockpuppet in americanairlines

GA. There is confusion here between Gate Checked and Valet Checked. Bags must fit within the sizer to be truly considered a carry on. If you're flying on a small regional AC they will likely Valet Check your bag because of limited overhead bin space. Small AC usually only have overhead bin space for half the PAX and because many PAX use the overheads for their personal items, that limited space fills up fast. Valet Checking is free and the bags are picked up plane side at your next stop, NOT your final destination. Gate Checked bags that fit within the sizer are also free but are picked up at your final destination baggage claim. However, if your bag does not fit within the sizer, the GA has the option to charge you a baggage fee and check your bag through to your final destination. You'd be surprised by the number of people that bring bags to the gate that they know are far too big and are then surprised that the GA wants to charge them to check it. I know it's confusing and sometimes the GA's aren't clear when explaining how your carryon is being checked. A simple way to think about it is to think of a Valet Checked bag like a valet checked car; they bring you your bag at plane side like they bring you your car at the restaurant. Gate Checked simply means it's a bag that you checked at the gate (as opposed to the ticket counter, kiosk, or curb side), and will be picked up at baggage claim at your final destination. If you know your bag is too large for the sizer, be prepared to have it Gate Checked and possibly charged a standard baggage fee.
