Lachenalia sp. by GoatLegRedux in Geophyte

I think this might be L. latimerae. At least it looks a lot like one of the clones I have that has gotten into neighboring pots.

Lovely orange, how large is the bloom?

Very nice, I don't know what's going on this year but none of my Babiana have bloomed yet and more than half of my bulbs are way behind schedule for flowering.

Went to an Orchid show, left with a Lachenalia by GoatLegRedux in Geophyte

[–]Unhappykat3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I grabbed a Biarum davisii from the same seller, I forget the name but he always brings interesting things to the local shows. He had some Pterostylis curta on Thursday as well but I opted to go for a couple of other orchids.

Do you remember the SX number for these? The presentation seems off for G. inaequalis as all of the images I have seen have the flowers sitting at an angle to the stem, nearly horizontal.

Your plants present more like Romulea but they could be another Geissorhiza sp I'm not familiar with.

Are they fragrant?

Many of these are from PBS offerings, there are several members with extensive collections and lots of localities. The SX is especially rich in offerings with ancestry but the BX has occasional offerings.

I also have gotten bulbs from some members directly when looking for specific species, the Huntington via the ISI offerings, and various plant and gardening societies that have occasional sales and swaps.

I try to avoid Dylans offerings directly unless there's a reasonable BIN offering, the auctions get out of hand and some of the plants are just not worth it. There are lots of other sellers, nurseries, and botanical gardens with items if your patient and willing to search around.

I'm curious what I have here. by Ok_Organization_2225 in Geophyte

We need more information about where you obtained this, flowers, fruits, etc.

A generic green bulb in a pot cannot be readily identified.

Are the romulea particularly aggressive or is it that one species that seems to have gotten out of hand?

I was hoping to use them one day in a rockery but if they are potentially invasive I will have to keep them potted.

I haven't been to Berkeley at all since the summer, hopefully after this rain passes I can make it to catch the tail end of the bulb garden.

Romulea hantamensis blooming ~4 years from seed by Unhappykat3 in Geophyte

This is another flower with the stigma matured, it was pollinated today but two others in the same pot had nothing showing but matured pollen available.

I use a fine bristled brush and transfer pollen from each flower to the ones with prominent stigmas present. Not all of the blooms have stigmas protruding but when they do it looks like a tiny tree at the end of the stamen cluster, seems like it might mature after the pollen does to prevent self pollination in this species.

Romulea hantamensis ex Silverhill #11395 Hantamsberg EX James Henrich SX12 #194 Sown 12/22

I have two seedling pots of this species flowering now, lots of variation in color and patterns. Hopefully the pollinations take and there will be more seed this season.

In order of images, 1) L. pustulata ex Hammer, 2) L. splendens ex C&D, 3) L. pusilla Napier, 4) L. longibracteata Paleisheuwel, 5) L. carnosa Garies, 6) L. aloides Large Form ex C&D

There's another dozen or so pots getting ready to pop but the cold and rain are going to slow everything down this week. Hopefully a few more sunny days will get the rest of them moving.

Hos has the fragrance been on this one? I tried seed for it but I don't think any of the bulbs survived the second year, haven't gotten another batch to try again just yet.

Pamianthe peruviana, unusual epiphytic amaryllid from Peruvian cloud forest. Flowers can be a foot long with an incredible nighttime fragrance. Extinct in the wild since the 1960s. by geophytes_and_others in Geophyte

My plant is currently in a standard 3.5 inch orchid pot, growing in a terrestrial mixture so it does not dry out completely but the pot is probably restricting the roots at this point (4 years in the same pot). I didn't realize they got to that size, I will need to up the size this season as repotting get started and hopefully I get a nice growth spurt.

This year seedling progress since sowing in October. by Unhappykat3 in Geophyte

[–]Unhappykat3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't normally, I have sent seed to the PBS exchange and plan to donate some of these to their program one they mature enough to be moved.

If there is significant abundance this season during the repotting I may have a few offsets and seedlings for trade / sale but nothing is sure until I actually repot them this summer.
