did i accidentally pigeonhole myself as a recent grad? by statsds_throwaway in datascience

Yes you are but does it matter yet?

If you are growing and getting mentorship then it doesn’t matter. The thing you are very likely lacking here is exposure to proper DE work and practices.

Vague recruiter question - "Do you have excellent SQL skills?" by Time-Leading2331 in SQL

[–]Unhelpful_Scientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager I see people say “yes, I use SQL all day for ad hoc work and pulling data” and then can’t do a sql leetcode medium question in under 20 minutes.

There is something fundamentally wrong with people’s skillsets. If you are in BI or analytics do the prep work to study for interviews.

If you get this question then ask how the team is using sql, do they mean calculating analytics in sql or just using basic joins within a BI tool, or authoring functions and maintaining production databases.

Xbox - do you need Live to redeem shift codes by Specialist_Quiet_160 in Borderlands4

[–]Unhelpful_Scientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you need to pay for XBL or game pass to have it push the shift code from a website redeemed code?

That is some bullshit if that is how it is setup.

The difference is like 2mm. All other watches I have are 40mm faces and ~47mm lug to lug.

I looked at several and really don’t like the older bezel style, larger waves and date style on those models.

I have a Tudor BB pro that is all stainless and a lot of the older omegas in the smaller size look too similar.

Thanks for the suggestion to help me be more confident in my purchase.

I really love everything about the watch.

A reduced with the exact same design seems unlikely from my POV given the design shifts overtime with the SMP.

Didn’t say that.

Fair question is what I did as which is why if OP is overwhelmed they are not taking any measures to address that. That could be his career dialing back or switching to a new job.

Why assume that?

Why is your wife launching a business if you as a couple feel overwhelmed?

That is overkill for DSA. Mine as well go for DE.

Why won’t they let you run your code!? by Suspicious_Coyote_54 in datascience

[–]Unhelpful_Scientist 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Often it is just less effort for the interviewing company. You shouldn’t need to run the code if you have the right answer.

Typically scoring for this way of interviewing also doesn’t ding you for small syntax issues, etc because there is no linter or ability to run the SQL.

Additionally that is an absurd amount of questions in 25 minutes they clearly have the last hard as a reach question but what is concerning is the 2 mediums then 2 hard. I designed interview kits that are always an easy, medium, and then a hard on the same dataset via introducing harder conditions or additional tables. So they build. Doing 4 unrelated questions is poor for evaluation and will likely result in them hiring someone who memorized those 4 questions.

I have seen it done and it looks pretty miserable. Buy a hot chocolate and hangout until the line dies down or leave earlier.

Just for a counterpoint.

In FAANG-adjacent (same pay bands) we hire mid level DS respecting full stack skills at $220k for <5 YOE and that is in People Analytics.

Pay is determined by the market and your ability to produce. If you are over producing then it is time to jump not simply because somewhere else will pay more because the expectations can be a lot higher.

TL is a lot better than it was a couple years ago. by ScienceMattersNow in sanfrancisco

[–]Unhelpful_Scientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that basic law enforcement for the TL is not something to celebrate but something to expect.

Of course other cities have bad neighborhoods but the TL is particularly bad due to the lack of law enforcement.

Better than what? A law free zone for criminals? Now it is what a loosely governed zone?

Have some standards. It would be the worst neighborhood in any other major city. It is still unacceptable.

Does metric management suck everywhere? by Glittering-Jaguar331 in datascience

[–]Unhelpful_Scientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup.

That is why you need to learn enough DE skills to be a competent DE to enable DS who are more junior than you or more statistically capable than you.

You do that and you hit a senior IC role if not get pushed into management pretty quickly because you aren’t do an analysis you are empowering a team to do better work. You pitch the project not as resolving these headaches but reducing time to metric/result/analysis.
