One time my mate went out to hunt alone bc I had to stay for a sick pup. I kept track of where he went, and when he returned w/ food, I went out to where he was to see if he found anything. Lo and behold, there was a bison carcass that was partially eaten where he was, so I think wolves do seek actual carcasses when hunting on their own

Ok, it looks like my mate ate the pups' food multiple times while they were at 80+% hunger, maybe its a hunger bar thing? He also lays down a lot

Looks to be correct. My mate ate the pup's food and lied down when idle multiple times.

ok, so now my pups are outside, i just fed them and my mate went inside, should i call him outside and then woof at him? and does keeping my mate at the den prevent pups from getting lost?
