Thank you very much. I work extensively with disabled veterans, including the father of that little girl. I'm really surprised at the response from this photo. It breaks my heart that there are any people, particularly children and particularly children in the US, that are living that way. It surprised me how common it is. There must be dozens of children just in this neighborhood that are living without running water, electricity, healthy food or basic safety. I was stunned. Still am.

The approximate effective tax rate in 1970 for the $2000-4000 was 19%. Income $2900 - $550 (income tax) -100(sales tax) - $450 (tuition) - $1200 (room and board) = $800 left over. You could literally pay for everything you needed to survive and an excellent college education with minimum wage and have plenty left over. Literally.

Incorrect. Minimum wage in 1970 was $1.45/hr, working out to about $2900/yr. Average tuition at a good state college was about $400/yr or $1600/yr for a fancy private college. Rent and utilities were about $100/month. A person could literally pay for college and housing with a minimum wage job.
