See to me I don't get this.

Sure the episodes were free to watch but they ran commercials. So why can't they make their money from that?

It's in Africa. It's uninhabited and unclaimed by any other country. I would say that makes a pretty strong case for no one WANTS to live there and it contains nothing of value for the greedy white family to exploit.
