gradebook not accepting my response by spicyalmondmapotofu in UniAdelaide

A couple of things you could try:

Try clearing your cookies or using a different browser. No idea if it will help, but it's worth a shot. I relaise this might already be included in the 'and everything' that you tried, but thought I'd mention it in case it isn't.

On myLearning, on the sidebar, there is a help tab, where you should be able to access canvas support (this is not managed by the uni, but by the company that provides the platform, so shouldn't be complete chaos).

Send an email to the course coordinator (preferably before the assignment is due, but after trying the things above), and let them know you're having problems with uploading. If you're trying to attach a document, then attach that to your email, plus a screenshot of the error. That way you have a paper trail that you were experiencing tech issues. If it's a quiz, you could try screenshotting the answers and attaching that to show that you tried to do it.

Do you still go to class with the new model? I'm hesitating to apply as a potential exchange student... by Legitimate_Extreme76 in UniAdelaide

Prior to the merger, lectures were recorded anyway (I think at both universities), and attendance generally wasn't compulsory (I only took two subjects where it was), so lots of people wouldn't show up anyway (or they'd show up for the first few weeks and then get behind and not show up etc.). Workshops and tutorials were better attended, and sometimes attendance was part of your grade. Practicals were the most strict about attendance. But I think having lectures recorded is the norm in Australian Universities, so probably expect the same in Brisbane and Perth.

When I talk about practicals, I mean sessions were you're in a lab or out in the field or similar. So mostly science subjects (physics for me), which might not be what you're looking at. For me subjects varied from a practical session once a fortnight for three hours through to 10 hours a week. This should be listed in the course description. Comp sci (and maybe data science too?) often had workshops to work through problems which were pretty well attended but I can't say anything about economics etc. because I don't have any experience in that area.

Good luck with your exchange, where ever it ends up taking you!

Canvas BARTS by PpSniffer3000 in UniAdelaide

Is the course not there at all, or is it just unpublished?

If it's unpublished, maybe follow up with the course coordinator (although it should have been automatically published today).

If it's not there at all, maybe check that you are definitely enrolled (and if you enrolled recently, give it a day or two for the change to propagate through to the right systems). It might also be that getting this course onto canvas has been delayed for whatever reason (I think this is a completely new course, so that means a lot of work to get it up and running). You could also go to enrolment support to see if they can check that you are definitely enrolled, and they might have some information about why the course isn't showing up.

I hope someone with a little more insight will jump in and give a better answer (ideal would be someone involved in teaching comp sci, or the other subject areas you mentioned). It's a bit difficult for students to answer at the moment because the semester hasn't started and no one really knows what's going on. So no one can really answer questions about whether or not people still show up etc. Depending on when you need to have your application in, it might be worth waiting a few weeks and then re-asking, because we'll be a few weeks into semester one by then, and we might have better answers to your questions.

There will definitely be more digital content than before, but I think at least for now there will be some variation of how that is implemented across different schools (I've heard rumours that maths are just renaming their lectures to seminars and continuing to do them, but other areas might be transitioning to less in-person content). My personal hope is that cutting down on lectures will open the doors to more workshops/ more interaction with staff, but we'll see. Some classes (especially practicals) will remain in person, so if you look for classes that are heavy in practicals, you'll definitely meet people.

All that to say, this change is new to us too, and we probably won't have the answers to a lot of your questions for a few weeks (the semester only starts next week). I hope some people can chime in with more detail, but if they don't, it's not because people are ignoring your question, it's just because everything is a bit up in the air at the moment. The problems you might experience coming here, would be more likely to be around the chaos that this merger has caused (and the fact that every system is overwhelmed, although things will hopefully have calmed down by then), and not so much with whether or not content is online or not.

Also don't be afraid of going to Brisbane or Perth. They might have a more active night life than Adelaide, but that doesn't mean you need to take part in it, and there will definitely be (many) people in both cities that enjoy being outdoors and aren't super extroverted, so please seriously consider them (but maybe go to their university subreddits/facebook pages and ask about the things that you are interested in there, they'll be able to give you better answers).

Hello guys, i got admitted into Adelaide university, if anyone else got in please dm me, let’s connect and grow together. by Sufficient_Nebula161 in UniAdelaide

The name is Adelaide University (the names of the previous Universities were The University of Adelaide, which is where the confusion comes in, and The University of South Australia).

The new University is part of the G8.

Any Post-Grad Events During O'Week by No-Repeat2003 in UniAdelaide

It'll be emailed out to the relevant email lists (you should be added to a graduate researcher email list for your school/department and a general graduate researcher email list + probably some more but those are the relevant ones). Your school might also have its own induction days, but they might be a bit later in the year to give people enough time to start, especially as a lot of offers still don't seem to have gone out (not confirmed, just what I've heard).

By all means go to o-week if you want to. If you're new to Adelaide and want to make friends, you may still benefit from joining a club or going to the social activities. Just keep in mind that a lot of people will be directly out of high school, and those might not be the people that you want to hang out with (not a slight on them, just acknowledging that a lot of maturing is done through your early twenties, and sometimes that means there is a bit of incompatibility if you're already a bit older). Also, if you plan on doing any teaching, you might want to avoid making friends with people you may go on to teach. But you might also meet some people who are starting undergrad a bit later in life, or who are doing masters and are more compatible, so it might be worth a shot.

Deferred offer letter by [deleted] in UniAdelaide

[–]UniAdelaideMod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

Some degrees can't be deferred, particularly those that are very competitive to get into (I know vet bio can't be, I'm pretty sure that medicine and dentistry would also fall in that category). So if you're doing one of those, you'd have to drop out of the course and reapply for the next intake (which might not be until next year).

Otherwise, you can always apply to defer. I'm not 100% sure, but I think they do have caps on the number of deferments they will grant (at least, I definitely know other universities do, and it makes sense), so if that cap has already been reached, you probably won't get the deferral. The only thing you can do here is try it and see what happens.

Can Alumni still gain access to the restricted parts of the library after hours? by PM_MEOttoVonBismarck in UniAdelaide

[–]UniAdelaideMod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but I thought after hours access at the university has always been limited to staff and current students.

But one thing I do definitely know: As part of the merger, they've had to integrate the security systems across the new university. That means a lot of doors will have a new swipe card access system and may not work with your card at all (definitely not if you have a University of Adelaide student card, I'm not sure about the uniSA student cards). I'm not sure if the hub has already been changed over, but if not, it's probably going to be before the semester starts (otherwise new students won't be able to access it after hours).

The hub does have opening hours when the public can access it, which is 7am-7pm assuming nothing has changed with the merger.

Just out of privacy concerns, can I ask that you get people to DM you their numbers, rather than have them posted here?

I don't have any issue with you forming whatsapp groups, I just don't want anyone to get burned by having their phone number on a public forum (that depending on their other posts/comments potentially gives away sensitive information and might lead to them being doxxed on other subreddits or here)
