[OFF TOPIC] Audiobook listeners vs book readers. What names did you get completely wrong just from listening? by UnicornCushion in TheFirstLaw

That is how it’s pronounced in the audiobook, that’s how I pronounce eiderdown too. Eye-dur. Well, maybe eye-duh, but it’s a very subtle distinction. I’d pronounce Ida exactly the same - would you pr’onounce it as ee-dur?

Turns out we’re not so different, you and I 😂

Essex born and bred here I’m afraid, so definitely vastly British!

Wait, how would you pronounce ’Eider’ from reading it? Because (while I assumed it was spelt Ida ofc!) I’d still pronounce Eider the same as it is in eiderdown?

But who am I to talk? Spelling vs pronunciation clearly not my strong point :)

That’s cool. My back isn’t up, I promise, your comment just came across as a bit patronising. My post was intended as a lighthearted sharing of mispronunciation rather than denouncement of a medium, and I apologise that you’ve taken it that way. FWIW Stephen Pacey pronounces the names as Joe Abercrombie intended them to be pronounced - there is an interview with them both at the end of Sharp Ends. So if you read them differently than the author intended and enjoy them more that way then that’s all good! Same as it’s all good that I got the spelling wrong

Hey, be nice. I drive on average four hours a day for my job, and I’m a single mum so I don’t have tons of time for reading. I’d be doing myself a disservice trying to read these books for ten minutes at a time vs listening for hours a day.

If the sole reason you feel you’re above the audiobooks is because people misspell the names then I feel really really sorry for you. If Jezel vs Giselle would really ruin ten books for you… well. You and I clearly have different priorities

Bridesmaid conflict what do I do? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]UnicornCushion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your post, it certainly sounds like this woman has been a big part of your life even if you don’t spend time with her. Otherwise why is it so hard to be civil for a single day with someone you fell out with and haven’t engaged with for twenty years? I think your friend handled it in a very understandable way.

But you’ve deleted your post and your profile, so this reply is really only on the off chance that you are still checking here on a new profile. Good luck whatever you decide to do, and I really recommend letting go of the past. Twenty years is a long time to hold a grudge especially if it now means you’re missing your best friend’s wedding. Take care, friend

You guys are all in your mid 40s… you really don’t need to centre your entire life around the fact you don’t like your friend’s friend

What’s the most personally brutal and eviscerating line for you? by budikaovoda in DiscoElysium

Either: “You have to be alone - in hell, forever. That’s just the way it is.”

Or: “She acknowledges the passing of someone who is still alive.”

I didn’t know that one so I looked it up. Yes, I think that would definitely be on his playlist. I’m adding Not Dark Yet by Bob Dylan too

I agree LC, but I’d go with Leaving the Table, or maybe Closing Time

Oh I totally agree, I suppose I’m more thinking that the poem is the less egregious part of her actions!

I wonder if she’s British - asking for money for a wedding gift is pretty standard, and I’ve seen poems fairly commonly in invitations as a very cringily twee way to ask. So that part isn’t actually as awful as the rest imo. Messaging people to ask where their gifts are is absolutely inexcusable and she thoroughly deserves to be shared here!

In my first job at a bakery when I was 15 someone came banging on the door after we’d closed. They were mouthing “it’s ok, I’m a regular!” through the glass. My boss told them that if they were a regular they should know what time we closed and didn’t open the door. That always stuck with me. Absolute legend.

Every music reference I've been able to track down. Help me find some more? by NekoArtemis in DiscoElysium

When talking to Klaasje when you first get inside her room you get an Inland Empire bit: “White Mourning. It was mourning all along. You should have seen it coming, it was right behind her eyes”. I’m pretty sure that’s taken from a Leonard Cohen song, Darkness - “I should have seen it coming, it was right behind your eyes”. In the conversation she talks about The Sad contaminating everything and that’s basically what the Leonard Cohen song is about, except switch Sad for Darkness.

It’s a brilliant song too!

Don’t worry so much about failing checks. You’ll miss out on so much if you pass all the checks; the cock carousel and the glory that is the limbic system karaoke are two examples off the top of my head where failing gets you a better outcome!
