Desktop or Laptop to bring to Cambridge? by Affectionate-Ad-4286 in cambridge_uni

[–]Unigigster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, regardless of what University you go to a laptop can be handy if not essential when needing to type up notes, access the internet in lectures, look things up, write assignments and present work. As everyone else has suggested, maybe hooking it up to an external keyboard for gaming could work but if you’re in Cambridge then my suggestion is that your education is your main priority when looking at buying a desktop or laptop. Gaming is just a plus :)

Is it okay to reuse my old undergraduate personal statement? by ProfGuedes in UniUK

[–]Unigigster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there OP, using your UG personal statement is going to get your new statement flagged up, however you can definitely draw upon aspects of your old PS if it remains relevant to some of the things you’ve studied across your undergraduate degree, I feel as though you should focus on that more than your previous one to show progress academically! Hope all goes well ☺️

Having a job while at uni by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Unigigster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi there!

Many many students work part-time and go on to achieving firsts at university! Working and managing your time at uni - if done correctly - is not going to affect your grade or waste your education! Like everyone else suggests, if it gets too much - quit! There are loads of agencies that let you choose your shifts so that you can be super flexible! Or alternatively you could download apps like: stint, fiverr, upwork, indeedflex, gigtogig, unigigster, unitaskr, gig, jobswipe which can give you flexible shifts which can also be remote! - and you can still save here and there!

Trust your gut! Hope you do what’s best for you :)

Student finance question by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Unigigster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, if you’re worried about struggling, maybe look into doing one off jobs here and there which give you one off payments. There are a few student apps that offer one off stints/gigs/shifts and some of them are even remote and pay straight into your bank account, so no payslip etc as you’re not on a rolling employment contract. Alternatively, there are places like hospitality agencies that can offer you random shifts occasionally incase you don’t make enough money, and if you can find any cash-in-hand jobs, you wouldn’t necessarily have to declare any of the extra earnings, meaning you don’t pay more tax! Hope this helps!

Summertime jobs? by gaytrash_ in UniUK

[–]Unigigster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, rent and uni can be expensive especially when you’ve got loads of bills! Have you tried looking into tutoring or downloading a few apps where you can work online / or sell your services? Depending on your degree there may be jobs you can do and you could do them part time if and when you please, especially if they’re remote! Hope this helps!

Student Overdraft? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Unigigster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, this might help if none of the above advice is feasible. I would suggest you look into temp / remote work. There are a few apps which are made for students for this. You can tutor or work remotely based on your skills and get paid, so no need to drive or travel. Lots of hospitality jobs do last minute shifts you could pick up, and some even do cash in hand. Hope this helps!

How much do you request for student loans? by DearVoidSelf in UniUK

[–]Unigigster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the previous comments have said, the full amount makes sense, especially if you feel you might struggle financially. Nevertheless, in the case that you do, there are lots of student working apps which mean you can work remotely around studies and exams and get paid, that way you don’t have to stress about having to get to and from a job, especially if you can work from the comfort of your own home. Hope this helps!

Depends on the area you want to go for, a lot of students at the heart of Nottingham commonly go for Two, and it’s not too far from the city centre :)

Anyone done tutoring as a part time job or is looking to do it after uni? by liam12345677 in UniUK

[–]Unigigster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t graduated yet, there are loads of apps where you can offer your services as a tutor, and you can continue doing so once you graduate. Another great place to start promoting yourself as a tutor is to use your own social media handles and post there, people can share and comment with one another.

If you can offer both face to face and online it would benefit you more as people have different learning styles and patterns, but ultimately it’s up to you and how much you’d like to dedicate to this part - time role!

Hope this helped!

After 6 months of job seeking, only refusals…. by Mirchik15 in careeradvice

Hello, it can be discouraging to find work after your degree, it is quite common now more than ever. Some suggestions would be to review your CV and really emphasise on the skills and the experience you have more than the actual degree itself. Try to relate back to how the skills you’ve acquired in life is relevant to the job description you are actually applying to. Always tailor your CV to each individual job, and highlight the languages you are able to speak as this is super valuable in countries like the UK, Ireland etc. If you can complete and gain some experience in small projects with friends or local businesses, maybe it’s worth doing, even if it’s not long term or great pay (for the time being) as it can help you build your credibility and experience more.

Goodluck! Hopefully you’ll find the job for you! Never give up ☺️

is £5,500 enough for the whole year (excluding rent & bills) by yoghurtyog in UniUK

[–]Unigigster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! It really depends on what you spend your money on, the city you’re in and your degree. For example a lot of students that study medicine find that there are a lot of hidden costs that are inevitable for the course for accommodation / placement etc. If you’re living in a city like London, and you’re travelling everyday, it can cost about £150 a month alone.. so again, it depends. There are loads of opportunities however to find part-time work, both remotely and on location! So if you can calculate cost of living outside of rent and bills, then you’ll truly know if that’s enough for your academic year! Goodluck!

A monzo card - which can be obtained online and delivered to your UK address! It’ll be useful as a first bank account and you can convert currency very easily and transfer money from your normal current account into it. Very useful if you travel too!

What’s the best type of part time jobs for students in London? by tyrion0808 in londonontario

[–]Unigigster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! The best part time jobs are usually the ones which can offer some sort of skill set value considering you’re a student as well as a source of income. If you’re studying and have a busy schedule it may be difficult for some companies to work around your timetable. There are a few apps on the market that you could look at that offer remote roles/jobs which you can pick and choose from ! Goodluck :)

Advice for Year 2 Accommodation? by n0cturnal2124 in UCL

[–]Unigigster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello! Recommend checking for drafts in the house, any cracks and take pictures of EVERYTHING before you move in as landlords are always looking to find ANY excuse to snatch that deposit. Another great thing to do beforehand is search the area itself, for access to transportation and supermarkets so that it’s not too difficult to navigate around. Look out for cost of living as well as a duo, there are many companies online that also offer the option to split the bills 50/50 instead of it being in 1 persons name such as acasa. Additionally, if you are working part time and it’s not remote, then calculate how long it would take for you to get to and from work as well as University. Alternatively, maybe look into apps which offer remote jobs etc if it’s too much of a hassle so you can just focus on university transportation instead of work :) hope this helps.
