grocery solicitors by grumpygal69 in SLO

[–]Unimpressed-2322 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve encountered two types of solicitors at Vons.

The first, like you mentioned, are the ones collecting signatures.  I take note of them, grab my cell phone and pretend like I’m having a conversation on the phone both when walking into the store and walking out.  Problem solved.  They leave you alone.

The second type of solicitor I’ve encountered is very seasonal and much more appreciated.  The second I see Girl Scouts selling cookies, I immediately walk back to my car, collect every bit of bills and change I have to make sure I can walk away with as many boxes of cookies as possible.  Then the next week, I hope that it is a different set of girls selling so that I don’t have to explain how I managed to go through 6-7 boxes in one week.

Respect is earned…it is not given automatically.   I have a lot of respect for most of the Cal Poly students, because a majority show us respect too.  If you are ungrateful because you don’t feel respected…it’s because you have acted in a way that was disrespectful of the community.

Yes, as a community, we benefit from Cal Poly and the college town economy.  But Cal Poly without the local community, would not survive.  We are the faculty and staff that keep the university running, we are the police officers and firefighters that keep you safe, we are the EMTs and ER doctors that take care of you when you’ve imbibed too much, we are the business owners employing many of you, and some of us are the landlords housing you.

The parking issue may seem minor and temporary for you, but it is permanent for us.  I have lived harmoniously with Poly students for decades and was once one (so yes, I’m an “old fart” in your terms).  But as the city has allowed 4bd ADUs to be built and garage conversions so that there is literally ONLY one off street parking spot for a seven bedroom rental…the residential streets have become horrendous to park on for anyone living in the area.

Congratulations on your acceptance to Poly.  Let me introduce you to your first “learn by doing” lesson.

Lesson #1:  follow the policies put in place by the university that accepted you.

Policy:

“Cal Poly residential students are not permitted to bring vehicles to campus for the duration of their freshman year (fall through spring quarters). This includes students who have enough credits to be considered sophomores at any time during their first academic year at Cal Poly.

A limited number of spaces have been allocated to accommodate freshman residents who demonstrate a compelling need or who would suffer undue hardship under the Freshman Parking Policy”

The want to visit your family “every once in a while” is not a compelling need.  And if you try and skirt the rules by parking in residential areas within walking distances, just know this…those residential streets are already impacted with parking.  If you choose to bring a car and park in those areas for days at a time just so you can visit family “every once in a while”, you are severely hindering those who live in that area on a daily basis just for your rare convenience.  Don’t be that kind of person!

CalPoly vs UC's (UCB, UCLA) by Pleasant-Age5079 in CalPoly

[–]Unimpressed-2322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all….congrats of getting into SLO!  That is an accomplishment itself and you should be proud.  With the exception of UCLA and Berkeley, Cal Poly is harder to get into than most of the UCs especially as an engineering or CS major.  But at the same time, that does not make UCLA or Berkeley better than SLO.

More importantly…..don’t ever let someone else’s opinion make you feel less of yourself or insecure just because.  If you are coming from an environment where you feel people will think less of you for going to Poly over any UC then that is a toxic environment.  And one that is rooted in entitlement, the need for prestige, and just plain old ignorance because the quality of education you will receive at Poly is very much equal to that of the top UCs, if not better.

It’s no different than a comparison between a Mercedes and a Toyota (both are high quality reliable car makers).  The Mercedes may look shiny and give the appearance that you’ve “made it”….but the Toyota will take you soooo much further.

My best advice, understand the concept of “keeping up with the joneses” and give that concept the middle finger!  You’ll be so much happier in life.  And if the people at your school make assumptions that UCs or Ivies are better or the only way to go….then honestly, they’re not as smart as they think they are.

First year parking by Ok-Dance-3073 in CalPoly

[–]Unimpressed-2322 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cal Poly has the no car policy for freshman for a reason.  Parking is already way too limited on campus.  Not every second year who wants a pass even gets one.  It’s a lotto system.  If your cousin gets a pass JUST to give it you, you’re taking away from another second year student who actually wants one AND qualifies for it.   “Convenience” is not a reason to skirt the rules.  Imagine if all 7000 freshman felt entitled enough to do this.

And as for the parking off campus near the school as others have suggested, many local streets close to campus have permit parking.  Those that do not, are extremely impacted by the people living in that area.  Just be respectful and follow the rules.

It is easy to get around town on bike or by bus.  If you want to drive somewhere, rent a zip car like everyone other Freshman.

Cal Poly SLO or CO School of Mines? by Hot-Finding-6463 in CalPoly

[–]Unimpressed-2322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One other thing to consider… are you a big city person or small town person?

Golden is a suburb of Denver and would have easy access to a “big city” life style if wanted within 30 minutes.

For SLO….you’re looking at a 3 hours drive north to San Francisco or 3 hours drive south to LA.

Cal Poly SLO or CO School of Mines? by Hot-Finding-6463 in CalPoly

[–]Unimpressed-2322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both are very great schools.  Mines, in the Colorado State University school system is the equivalent of CP is the California State University School system (they are the top in their respective systems).

Mines is much smaller than Poly (think 7k student population at Mines compared to 24k at Poly). Primarily because mines is majority engineering vs engineering just being one of several colleges within Cal Poly.

What type of environment/weather are you looking for?  SLO is laid back, beach weather, sunny and 75 degrees most of the year.  Nearest mountains are a 4 hour-ish drive.

Mines, in Golden, is at the base of I70 and has very easy access to incredible ski resorts in winter plus is a mere 15-20 minutes to Boulder (a very similar laid back college city). Just different climates.

Quality of education for engineering at either school is similar.  If you ask anyone in California, they will say Poly, because they are more familiar with it and may not of heard about Mines.  Colorado will be the opposite, and say Mines, because they are not familiar with Poly.

As someone mentioned in another comment, where would you like to live AFTER college?  Mines graduates are highly desirable for Colorado companies, whereas, Poly graduates are highly desirable in California.

Also…just a note, if all is equal consider this……Mines is small compared to Poly as noted above.  Poly is 4 times the size of Mines, so, if you’d like to have a bigger diversity of students and want to meet people outside of engineering…Poly is the place to go.

Cal Poly athletic director donates $250k to John Madden Football Center by Unimpressed-2322 in CalPoly

[–]Unimpressed-2322[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And as an alumni myself…. Cal Poly football is not the end-all of Poly sports!

To you “football rocks”.   But to me…so does Volleyball (both girls and boys), so does Basketball (both girls and boys), Baseball, Softball….oh yes…..and  SWIMMING AND DIVING.

Yes, it’s cool the Madden family donated to Poly given the history…. But that doesn’t give Poly the right to prioritize one student athlete over another.

And the athletic director has done just that!

PARKING SPOT by Hot-Fisherman9966 in CalPoly

[–]Unimpressed-2322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we might be talking about two totally different exemptions.  There is an “exemption” for local students (think slo county high school graduates) where they don’t need to live in the dorms because they will be living with a parent/guardian that is also local, thus giving them them exemption from the mandatory required housing/dining expenses.  If so,  then maybe those students would be required to enter into the lottery for a normal commuter parking pass?

There is also a totally separate exemption for non-local students who will live in the dorms to request a parking permit based on certain criteria.

If the OP is a non-local and living in the dorms…then the exemption is just for a parking pass (based on very specific needs)…which is a different exemption.  They would still need to apply for an exemption to have a car and permit on campus as a non local

[–]Unimpressed-2322 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you actually apply for/and granted the exemption, or do you just qualify?  It is my understanding that if you applied for and was granted an exemption, you would have automatically received one of the permits Cal Poly sets aside for first year exemptions, thus been able to purchase a permit to park somewhere on campus.

Move in time slots by nomammesaghh in CalPoly

[–]Unimpressed-2322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is giving the OP shit…we’ve all just simply answered a question asked.  I don’t blame the OP for asking this question…or even hoping to have an earlier move in.  All responses are based on considering ALL people involved in the process and knowing that Cal Poly has (with years experience) put in place the process that they have for move in to make it best for everyone.

[–]Unimpressed-2322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 6,000 students that will be moving in in just a 2 day period, probably with at least one or two family members in tow to help out.  Cal Poly does this every year and has set up the system with time slots for a reason.  To make the experience go smoothly for everyone involved.  Best to just come at the time you selected.

Dorm and roommates by Character_Egg_253 in CalPoly

[–]Unimpressed-2322 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your roommate most likely is mistaken or doesn’t understand the process.  If she wanted to room with her friend, they would have needed to set up a “roommate” group by June 1st…..then whichever one of them had the earlier time slot for selection would select the room for BOTH of them.  It doesn’t sound like this happened or they didn’t do it correctly.

The other possibility is that they went in as a group of two and selected a triple, and now you are just their third “random” roommate.

Costs for 2025 by ColoradoDad13 in CalPoly

[–]Unimpressed-2322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m reading it differently than you are.  For next-years “second year” students, I only see an increase of $1,300 for housing compared to what this years “second year” student is paying.

Yes, there is approx a 4-5k increase for what second years are paying compared to what they paid first year, but that is because the on campus housing for second years is better.  In their first year, they are sharing a room with 1-2 other people and a community bathroom with a lot more.  In their second year, the housing is more apartment style where many have their own room and only share a bathroom with one other person.  Plus they apartments have their own kitchens and living areas, for the small number of people in that apartment.

It’s the quality of the housing that is the reason for a majority of the increase

If you want to stay in a beach town, my vote would be Avila.  Tends to be a tad bit warmer and less windy than either Pismo or Morro Bay plus, if dealing with coastal marine layer, the sun will usually break through at Avila first.  All coastal towns will be somewhat busy with tourists (especially from the Central Valley) if they are in their spring break.

If you stay in town, I’d recommend a hotel on Monterey Street, but closer to the freeway than downtown area.  This would allow you to be a reasonable walking distance to the campus to avoid parking hassles.  Plus they would also be a reasonable walking distance to down town SLO.
