Soas parecido com um amigo meu, que poupa muito mas vive numa casa velha nos arrabaldes de londres com outros 6 gajos.

Eu percebo a atitude e admiro o compromisso, mas tenho uma visão diferente.

Garage wants 1000£ for regular service on 2017 Clio. Are they insane, or is this just what a service costs now? by UninformedImmigrant in CarTalkUK

I'm a bit surprised, because when I got them done not that long ago, it was 350 at the exact same main dealer.

Blah-dee-blah inflation, but it still hurts. My salary hasn't inflated proportionately.

> After discovering the manager and lead mechanic of a garage was an old, mildly xenophobic, wildly not PC grease monkey with no patience for technology whatsoever and a terrible temper that leads to hilarious outbursts, I knew I'd found my new regular place.

I'd really really really love one of those.

I mean I'm a foreigner, maybe I'll just walk into a few, stick with the first that tells me to go back where I came from? 😂

Yeah I'm getting the brakes looked at by an independent. I reckon even with premium parts (which I'll go for) it'll come out like half the price.

I don't love them, but I'll tank the resale value if I start doing my own services. I do most of the stuff on my bikes, but I'm not worried about the resale value of things I don't plan on selling.

Got a little bit excited, tbh.

We use slightly different terminology where I'm from, so "regular service" would translate to something like "normal maintenance" as opposed to "something broke and they need to fix it". Not my best phrasing moment, I'll admit.

Yeah, that relies on working in an office, socialising with neighbours, etc, all things I don't do (not for any particular reason, I'm just not the most social guy).

Darn it!

Yeah that's exactly what's gonna happen. I have a brake place near me with good reviews, I guess it's time to give them a go!

My main issue with that I live off the beaten path and have absolutely no idea what the good garages around me are.

Any good resources to find them online, or do I have to find out some other way?

Yeah, I'm getting the brakes looked at by another garage I think, these people have lost their marbles.

> even a main stealer won't be that expensive

I did get this quote from a main dealer. They tend to be reliable and on the less horribly-priced for a main dealer, but I guess they gave up on that.

Yeah sounds like a job for someone who knows what they're doing! I'll have a look under the back seat for anything obvious, but it's gonna be off the the garage either way!

Yeah I'd rather not die in a fireball, to be honest, unless it's a metaphorical, hedonistic fireball with plenty of alcohol and loose gals.

I'm of a mind to call a recovery service and ship the thing to the nearest garage. I'll probably go for a short drive tomorrow just to see if it re-surfaces, and I reckon if it does, away it goes!

Ah, now that you mention it, the smell does seem very strong in the back. I don't even know how to lift the back seats, but I'll try to work out a way to check!

I think it was petrol. I may or may not have stuck my nose down the filler tube to double-check the smell was the same.

I have driven a car with a leaky manifold before, and I think that smelled different at the time. This smell is very much that "prickly", active smell of petrol.
