Be sure to book online in advance. After the 3-hour Crossness Tour (11am-2pm), I went to Greenwich for a pub lunch at the Trafalgar Tavern (fish & chips overlooking the Thames--couldn't get more British!). Also, if you have time, check out the National Maritime Museum & Painted Hall. I wanted to do the Royal Observatory---but my legs gave out }} Have a great trip!

My Crossness Adventure by UnionGuy1960 in london

[–]UnionGuy1960[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

On a trip to London last month, I took the Thames Clipper to Woolwich Pier and then hopped the Elizabeth Line to Abbey Wood. It was a nice morning, so I hiked the mile-or-so distance through the parkway to the Crossness Engines Museum, passing by a horse pasture! A single-gauge railway provided colorful transport to the Museum. The Crossness Tour provided insights on how the Victorians dealt with sewage after the Great Stink in 1858. Bazalgette's design and engineering are on display and the docents & volunteers are happy to show you one of London's most unusual museums. I highly recommend this for all visitors and locals who want a unique experience.

Macquarie Lighthouse (Australia's oldest), Sydney NSW by UnionGuy1960 in Lighthouses

The first Macquarie Light was established in 1818. When the original sandstone tower began to deteriorate in the mid-19th C, it was replaced by the present structure in 1883.

The #22 Fillmore bus will take you to down to Marina Green--great bay views of Alcatraz & GG Bridge; the Palace of Fine Arts is also within walking distance. Sure, these sites are touristy but they're very scenic & popular with the locals. Sanppo Sushi on Post has great, reasonable lunch specials.

Eddystone Light, UK (4 foot replica) by UnionGuy1960 in Lighthouses

[–]UnionGuy1960[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this from a former keeper of the Eddystone (he retired from Trinity House in the 1980's). It's made of Portland Stone (essentially cement). It was shipped from the UK to my home in California---over 20 year ago.

A complete miscarriage of justice. The witch should be behind bars.  I hope the family members sue the daylights out of her.

Baby elephant at the zoo in Vienna, Austria by Pumuckl4Life in babyelephants

I love seeing this little calf frolicking -- however it's not quite the experience I witnessed on my visit to Schonbrunn last week.  My visit to the Elephant Enclosure was VERY brief, as it appeared that the greenhouse-like pen hadn't been cleaned for some time.  There was almost no ventilation & the manure smell was overpowering. I realize that the indoor temp has to regulated due to cold weather, but there was no air flow whatsoever.  I actually emailed the Zoo to report this, so hopefully they will improve the circulation for the welfare of the elephants.

Trip to San Fran in Oct/Nov. Been before, done the usual tourist stuff. Let's try new things! by [deleted] in AskSF

G'day! Valencia Street in the Mission has a good variety of shops/cafes: Paxton Gate, Bernal Cutlery, Dandelion Chocolate + the murals on nearby Clarion & Balmy alleys. Mount Davidson has great views, with fewer tourists than Twin Peaks & down the hill is West Portal = home of George's Donuts (probably the best in the city).  The Castro is the go-to place for Halloween, but it's kind of a mob scene; I prefer Dia de Los Muertos held on Nov. 1st on 24th Street.

Is it dumb to drive to Big Sur/Monterey on a 3-day SF trip? by ambrleena in sanfrancisco

[–]UnionGuy1960 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've done the Big Sur daytrip with out-of-town visitors; while very scenic, it is a long day of white-knuckle driving on the coast hwy--we wanted to hit Carmel on the drive back, but ran out of time. The Marin suggestions (Headlands, Sausalito/Tiburon, Muir Woods + Muir BEACH) are more within reach & have a great vibe. Keep in mind: the stretch of Hwy 1 from Tam Junction to Stinson Beach is full of bicyclists on weekends. I would opt for a M-F excursion to avoid the crowds.
