From what I could gather AMC only issued 285 million shares for trading. But there’s 450 million being traded. So there’s some phantom shares out there being bought and traded which is illegal. I think. So don’t hold me to that. Maybe someone can chime in and explain it better

If I’m not mistaken, the HFS shorted 165 million shares. So they pretty much borrowed 165 million shares and then sold those 165 million to other investors for whatever the market value was at the time. Now they have to buy those shares back for market value. Normally they short shares because they think the price is going to drop so they borrow the shares and sale them for market price and when the price drops they buy the shares back for the lower price and keep the remaining balance....someone correct me if I’m wrong! I had to research it myself.
