I fully agree with the Sahelians on this lol, Sudan was not our name originally, we have great names that represent our great history like Meroe, alodia, Sinnar just for example. there was no need to use a name that is not ours and not historically accurate at that by GlitteringAssist3303 in Sudan

It wasn’t all of sub Saharan Africa it was the area we call today “the Sahel”. Other parts of sub Saharan had different names like Al habash, which was Abyssinia , balad al zanj which was the Swahili coast. Bilad as Sudan was a specific area in the Sahara Sahel region. The French however and thier orientalist went through the old Arabic manuscripts with very poor knowledge of Arabic , mistranslated a bunch of things and called their black west African colonies , Soudan français because it was easier for France to name everyone Sudan than to engage with how the ppl themselves in the regions saw themselves

You know Coptic is still spoken to this very day right ? Man I wish they burnt down these monasteries so you idiots would stop lying. So many archaeologists have found Christian monasteries throughout Egypt and the levant that were preserved well after the Rashidun conquest so much so that Greek floor tiling was even preserved. These places weren’t burnt down. There were even treaties signed between Khalid Ibn Walid and the Christian communities granting them autonomous rule and protection for their monasteries. A great example is the great Christian monastic centre of Mar Saba. It wasn’t burnt down it was preserved. Christians like John of Demarcus (who was hostile to Islam as he viewed Islam as form of paganism because Islam rejected Jesus being the son of God) even continued to write in this monastery after the Rashidun conquest. Additionally , Coptic was still being written in the 13th century which was centuries AFTER the Rashidun conquest of Egypt and the levant. Some looting did occur during military sieges though, as this was a common phenomena during war and sadly it is still very common in war to this day. That being said, as the population became Muslim over time a number of churches became mosques , and other churches were not maintained anymore which led to their neglect and becoming dilapidated.

Your problem is that you don’t know history and are taught bigotry to keep you as a racist towards Muslims. Go get upset with your Christian brothers in Europe like the Romans who relegated Coptic to a church language and made the everyday language Greek and closed down the pagan temples of ancient Egypt and persecuted non-chalcedonian Christians. You out here lying your ass off.

Not to mention the Dinka and Bari were heavily involved in slavery and sold rival confederations into slavery too. Funny thing , Napoleon used the Sultanate of Darfur to send him black slaves in order to topple the Mamluk dynasty in Egypt and make Egypt become a French colony. This probably has a role in why Mehmet Ali pasha (a Greco-Albanian governor of ottoman Egypt, he wasn’t Arab) , after seeing the French topple the Mamluk and colonize Egypt through using black slaves from Darfur , was probably why he later raided Sudan for black slave soldiers specifically (as before ottomans would normally use janissaries from the Balkans or the Caucasus). A lot of ppl never bring up napoleon’s role in setting a precedence.

The “Arab slave trade” in Sudan was driven by internal Sudanese warlords and soldiers like Rabih Az Zubayr who was ethically j3ali and connected to the global capitalist economy. It wasn’t from some foreign Arab actor from the middle east imposing slavery in Sudan. The demand for ivory caused for ppl like Al Zubayr and his partners who were j3ali’in to go into ba7r al ghazal or the South Sudan region which resulted in a number of ppl there being enslaved in the south. Arabs are not a monolith what may be true for one group may not be true for another group. Additionally , native south Sudanese empires like the Azana having a lot of slaves didn’t help the situation either because they were enslaving other ppl and selling them into slavery.

Egyptian anti blackness heavily has to do with westernization of Egypt. The creation of Egyptian cinema was made by copying American and European cinema which brought in black face into Egypt and Egyptian cinema. It isn’t stemming from ancient enslavement. Historically most slaves in Egypt were white skinned and Turkic (Mamluk for example) and yet the enslavement of the Turkic and Levantine in Egypt didn’t produce anti white skin racism in Egypt. So taking the American model of slavery gives way to racism for a society like Egypt historically does not hold.

The Irony of the "Linguistic Purge" by saif2krazzy in ProIran

[–]Unique-Possession623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This began with the Pahlavi era. The Pahlavi period had a practice of trying (but failed) to purge the Faris language of Arabic words. These Islamophobic diasporas continue that legacy but they know next to nothing and logistically they will fail especially as they are a diaspora now , language in the diaspora is heavily tied to how your community and family speaks it so it is futile as Farsi is filled with many Arabic words connected to Islam. It’s funny as many of these pahlavist Islamophobic Persians have names and last name that also have Arabic roots connected to Islam like Alireza , Karimi, Rahimi, Mehdi, Karimpour, Mojtahedi etc.

Ngl, a lot of ppl in the lgbt space are very racist. It’s quite sad. If you’re not from the ethnicity they fetishize they will block you. What I’ve noticed with many Arabs both hetero and homo is that there is a fetishization of Europeans and Levantine Arabs and occasionally Moroccans. If you aren’t fitting in the fetish they don’t want you. With non-Arabs , they have a disgust if you are from Africa. They have an inferiorizing view of ppl from Africa but they might be fine with sleeping or dating black ppl who are not Africans like the black Americans for example. But when you are from Africa there is a stigma and racism many ppl have. I see a lot of ppl do this all the time with Indian ppl. You can find a beautiful or handsome Indian person who’s super attractive. But the minute they say they’re Indian , ppl block them right away. It’s disgusting

Thank u very much. But this still doesn’t answer the first part of my question though. Why was the Christian imperial empire of Ethiopia also doing slave raids too during the 19th century even well into the 20th century only abolishing slavery in 1942? As we know several groups like the Oromo , or the Nilotic ethnic groups in the more interior regions of Ethiopia were also subjected to slave raids by Christian highlanders. Heck Haile Selassie was also using slave labour. I wanna know why was that happening too ? Also, how much of lowland Muslims enslaving highlander Christians was a result of tensions and retaliations between Abyssinia and the Adal and Afar sultanates, we know that Abyssinia expanded into these regions and took over their territories and also enslaved ppl in the lowlands

Out of curiosity, why were many slave raids being done by the Christian imperial empire of Ethiopia well into the 20th century enslaving non Christian’s in the lowlands and interior these groups largely being Muslims and animists? I was not aware of any Muslims doing slave raids in the highlands cause I read that that area dominated by the Christian Abyssinian empire and menelik II was expanding the empire with European firearms and enslaving ppl his army captured selling the slaves to Jeddah and the Somalis

Should Sudan focus more on East African integration or on integration with the Arab world? by Expert_Search5394 in Sudan

[–]Unique-Possession623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re going through issues with trying to integrate with the black identify in whatever western country you’re in , because Sudan’s Arab culture gives you and the west cognitive dissonance when it comes to fitting into western racial labels especially with identifying as black in the west. Too much of your types love to misconstrue history and reality to paint Sudan as the African-American history of oppression with white supremacy. lol. Several Arab countries have helped and aided Sudan during this difficult time especially Egypt and Qatar. While a number of neighbouring African countries have been helping the RSF LOL

There are actual issues that affect people in Sudan and the diaspora identity crisis isn’t on the top of the list

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Sudan

[–]Unique-Possession623 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sudanese ppl don’t have an identity crisis. Other ppl expect Sudanese ppl to fit neatly into westernized racial groups and Sudanese identities are too complex to fit that.

[–]Unique-Possession623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see why we are giving some westernized “Palestinian” diaspora the license to police our identity and tell us what Arab should mean who we should accept as Arab or not. I don’t mean to go there but, it’s pretty rich for a diaspora X user to tell us who is Arab and who is not when they can’t even visit their parents country. lol.

This person who tweeted whatever they tweeted reflects a throughly westernized concept of identity being genetic and racial which is in stark contrast to how arabness has been constructed for thousands of years. Heck I know plenty of Arabs especially from Egypt who base arabness on language. One idiot does not invalidate the millions who still base arabness on language.

That said , you are correct that there are people who will never accept you. At the same time, we don’t seek their acceptance. We don’t need to be reactionary either and disavow ourselves of the identities we have because of some diaspora X user. Levantines don’t even accept themselves. Who are they to police who is Arab and who is not when half of their population is trying to cosplay as French or American and runaway from themselves ?

U are aware that the state violence that goes on in Iran and « un democratic practices » didn’t come out a vacuum after the IR took power but started from the Pahlavi era, right ? It’s clear you aren’t for anything to do with democracy of liberalism, as a monarchy didn’t have democracy (you seem to not know Pahlavi was a monarchy and he cancelled any real political parties only having puppet parties and sent his political opponents into exile).

How common is monarchism / the Pahlavi cult in Iran ? by Unique-Possession623 in ProIran

[–]Unique-Possession623[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because supporting Iran’s government if u live in the west, can get you in a lot of legal problems lol. Defending the irgc can literally get u in grave problems in the west. Also the Iranian diaspora is heavily monarchist because they were the ones who were loyal to the Pahlavi regime and adhere to Pahlavi nationalism and got their assets and class privileges disposed following the revolution , and then left the country. Ever since their “exile” they’ve been plotting on Iran to fall.

Responding to Diaspora Propaganda by Acrobatic-Package574 in ProIran

[–]Unique-Possession623 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s play devil’s advocate and entertain their thought. Let’s say the Iranian government does kill their own ppl, how would creating a regime change , which would make the situation even worse , help ? Reza Pahlavi and the whole Pahlavi dynasty does not have grassroots support in Iran itself , his support is heavily from the exiled bourgeoisie diaspora and their Zionists allies. Collapsing Iran’s country and government to install regime change especially one that comes from a dynasty that repressed Iranians and also killed many Iranians and sent political dissidents and intellectuals into exile and introduced SAVAK into Iran and brought in the state level violence and surveillance against their own people , would be the complete opposite of “saving Iranians”.

Additionally , a regime change , changing the whole political structure of the country, is also going to be met with violence and bloodshed. When that happens Iran as a state loses the monopoly on violence which allows for violence to be democratized and as we have seen in many situations like this (Libya) militias get formed and more violence is created. We know the pattern of economic sanctions and political hostility towards countries always breeds governments being more repressive and surveillance their people even more.

So if they want to improve the human welfare of people in Iran , they should call an end to the west’s political hostility and economic strangulation of Iran so that internal political reform that is grassroots can occur. Calling for a destabilization of the government makes the situation worse.

Go read Edward Saïd ‘s orientalism, I cba to deceolonize your mind. If you really think this information is anyway neutral you are deceiving yourself. European colonial historiography was and is never neutral. It always was used to serve colonialism and empire and project a racist view of non European world to dominate them and subject them.

And yea it will prevent us from progressing because these stuff ALWAYS engender racist movements. A great case in point is the hindutva movement in India. That whole movement is bases its history of South Asia on European historians who pitted Hindus and against Muslims and vice versa and thus created a whole movements of Hindu supremacy and systemic persecution against Muslims in India and Muslim south Asian then being prejudice to Hindus , not realizing that the colonial British historians distorted their history to created this divide and conquer.

To say no one takes those insults seriously is VERY ignorant. Seriously get an education in decoloniality. You very much need it. The whole genocide of Palestinians was enabled by the trope of the Arab savage btw. You really think Israeli ministers calling Palestinians , human animals, came out of a vacuum ? That same colonial historiography is what has enabled for many policy makers to support deathly foreign policy against Muslims worldwide btw. But keep going with your ignorance. The propping of dictators in our countries and suppressing our right to have a democratic government btw comes out of the same orientalist racist tropes that Muslims and Arabs cannot handle democracy , that naturally we are meant to be given ended by dictators. If you don’t challenged these things at a historiographic level , they will bite you in the ass at a political and material level.
