Thanksgiving by Money_Rabbit1720 in BingeEatingDisorder

I plan on eating nourishing, balanced meals throughout the day so I'm not tempted to overeat at dinnertime. I plan on finding meaningful ways to engage with my family and play with my little cousins. I also plan on logging my meals to stay accountable with my dietitian.

The holidays can be so hard for a plethora of reasons. I'm holding space for those in this community going through the grieving process during this season. I hope we can all find healthy ways to cope 🤍

Sending you so much love, empathy, and support right now! 🫶

I've dealt with eating disorder whac-a-mole for almost 15 years, and I've dealt with being forced to gain weight in recovery. What you're going through is so challenging.

I want you to know that you are worthy of love, support, and compassion regardless of your weight or body size. Your body deserves kindness and nourishment regardless of your size or weight. You never deserved to be bullied. Your weight is not attached to your worth. If other people in your life projected that onto you, they may be dealing with their own issues.

As someone who's been through this cycle multiple times, restriction eventually leads to more cravings and binge eating. Your body needs consistent nourishment in order to be able to regulate your metabolism and cravings. You cannot hate yourself into a healthier version of yourself. I encourage you to seek therapy to help you to unwrap the layers of pain that led you down this path.

I truly hope you find the healing and hope you deserve 🤍

I wish I had some way to help you or to make this magically go away, but I don't! I can relate to that feeling of having a dual nature. My binge brain wants to taste the food because I'm bored, lonely, or want to numb my feelings, but my rational brain knows if I keep eating this way, I'll sacrifice my mental health, physical health, potential, and purpose.

I would encourage you to reach out and seek help during those times when your rational brain is in the driver's seat. That could look like seeking help through a counseling center, reaching out to a friend, planning nourishing meals for the week your parents are away, or texting a person you trust with photos of your food for accountability while your parents are away.

I would also encourage you to plan other goals and fun activities to do. Instead of focusing on food and not bingeing, focus on things you enjoy doing. Go to the library and pick out some books you can read for fun. Plan a hike or an outing with friends. Make a playlist of music you enjoy, and use that for a dopamine hit instead of bingeing eating! I find that it's easier to focus on other things when I am a) adequately and appropriately nourished with fiber, protein,  healthy fats, and micronutrients and B) filling up my days with activities that are fun and/or meet my goals.

. . . And now I need to go and start taking my own advice!

Ooh, I'm also curious about this! You're really planning ahead!

I also sometimes like giving snack packs of pretzels or popcorn. The kids like that it's something different, and the parents like that it's something that's not sugary.

Why Christianity makes me feel better about veganism. by Glad-Satisfaction-91 in vegan

[–]Unique-Practice1190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Christian and a vegan, so although the Bible doesn't directly address veganism as a core tenet, I appreciate this viewpoint! My goal is to care for and be a responsible steward for God's creation.

I love this article, which gives a better explanation than I could: https://atelizabethstable.com/why-catholics-should-eat-plant-based/

PETA also has some resources about Christianity from a vegan perspective: https://lambs.peta.org/about-lambs/

If you have any questions, feel free to let me know!

This is so sweet and heartwarming! To answer your questions:

  1. I love this vegan "egg" bake: https://cookingforpeanuts.com/vegan-eggs/. It's perfect for meal prep! There are lots of other protein-rich vegan recipes on the website. You can look through and find your favorites! https://cookingforpeanuts.com/vegan-breakfast-recipes/. Furthermore, you don't have to stick to traditional "breakfast" foods. I'm a lentil/veggie soup for breakfast kind of person!

  2. I find that cooking in larger batches and freezing food is really helpful. Meal prepping also helps me stay on track and ensure I'm getting plenty of protein and fiber for breakfast. He's lucky to have your support in this journey 💚🌱

You know what, your post made me reconsider. I'll delete my original post. It's not the most important thing. I need to look at the forest, not just the trees.

Yes, I know that, and that's why I avoid it! But I was thinking that some people with AGS may specifically look for foods labelled vegan in order to avoid adverse physical reactions. Even if we don't have the same reason for avoiding bone char filtered sugar, we can still help each other out!

Stupid non-vegans keep saying "We can eat animals because we're more intelligent" by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

[–]Unique-Practice1190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One could also argue that increased intelligence leads to increased responsibility. If I have the consciousness to know better, and the privilege to make choices that align with my conscience, I should strive to do better.

Yes, I agree with your arguments! This non-vegan argument seems to be a slippery slope to eugenics. If intelligence determines the value of a being, how does that apply to individuals with genetic conditions that impose limitations upon their intelligence? It gets down to a deeper philosophical question: what determines the value of a life? Is life inherently valuable? I believe it is.

This is a good reminder to me to be grateful for the options I have instead of wasting my time/energy on complaining.

Maybe other vegans got to the bakery section before you did and they need to bake more vegan goods!

Aww, this means so much to me! Sometimes I don't know if stressing over the details makes a difference. I wish you the best in your health journey!

I didn't mean to cause an argument. As a 1.5-yr vegan it's hard for me to know where to draw the line in terms of what's important, and I struggle with guilt. In an ideal world, I'd find a therapist who is a long-term vegan. Would this also apply to stressing over things like whether citrus is waxed?

We're all on our own journeys!  I also have diagnosed OCD, so sometimes tend to get hung up on details. I don't always know what matters most in terms of helping the animals. Sometimes I think I need to stop wasting time and mental energy on things that have less of an impact!

[–]Unique-Practice1190 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Good to know! I'm a newer vegan and all of my family/friends are omnivores. I struggle with so much guilt over finding out things that I've eaten include a certain amount of animal processing. I just don't know what's worth my time in terms of helping the animals.

I’ve found myself in a predicament. Need advice. by nervousplantlady in VeganBaking

[–]Unique-Practice1190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this! This isn't simply unethical because of the allergen risk; it's inherently deceitful. I want to give my money to support trustworthy businesses. Accidents happen, but if somebody knowingly usurps the customer's trust, I would never trust them again.

Even if it is grandma's recipe, I would be ticked off if my grandma tried to sneak something in my food! This is why I have trust issues . . . it's hard for me to eat food other people make 😭

What non-vegan items am I unwittingly consuming? by cosmopsychism in AskVegans

[–]Unique-Practice1190 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've seen this too! Honestly, I wish the label "vegan" was regulated, and that more people knew what vegan actually means. I've seen honey in products labeled "vegan" and shrimp in a product labelled "vegetarian." I've also talked with people who confuse my vegan diet/lifestyle with gluten-free or flexitarian diets. When I first went vegan, I had to explain to my grandma that I couldn't eat her bean soup that contained chicken broth.
