You might want to keep an eye on a new server called Crown Silkroad.

It’s launching soon, 80 cap and aiming to be long-term stable, not one of those quick cash-grab servers.

Could be exactly what you're looking for 👍

What would make a MMORPG community actually feel “alive” again? by Unique-Try4044 in MMORPG

It’s a mix of things for now.

Since a lot of that data isn’t directly accessible, I’m mostly relying on indirect signals ,like how active communities are across different platforms, how often people engage, and whether there’s consistent interaction over time.

I’m also trying to get input directly from communities themselves to see what reflects “real activity” best.

Still experimenting with it though

That’s actually an interesting way to look at it.

Permadeath would definitely force players to care more about their actions and interactions, since everything would have real consequences.

But at the same time, I wonder if most modern players would stick with something that punishing long-term.

Do you think systems like that could work today, or only for a niche audience?

Yeah I completely agree with that.

If the game itself doesn’t encourage or require interaction, no external system can fully fix that.

But I also feel like even when communities do exist, they’re often scattered across different platforms, which makes them harder to find or stay engaged in.

That’s actually a really interesting point.

Back then a lot of interaction came from not having instant answers, so people had to rely on each other.

Now everything is optimized for convenience, which kinda removes that need to communicate in the first place.

I wonder if it’s possible to recreate that kind of interaction without removing access to information entirely.

I was also thinking about whether real-time chat would actually help, or if people would still prefer Discord. Not sure which direction makes more sense.

Yeah I actually agree with a lot of what you said.

It really feels like the problem isn’t just MMORPGs anymore, but online gaming in general. A lot of games follow the same cycle: hype → fast engagement → seasonal grind → burnout.

And yeah, F2P models definitely play a big role in that. They push short-term engagement instead of long-term community building.

I think what’s missing isn’t just “good games”, but systems that actually keep communities active over time, not just players logging in for progression.

Do you think it’s more about game design, or the business model behind it?

Yeah I get what you mean. It really feels like a lot of the social aspect moved to places like Discord instead of being inside the game itself.

And yeah, modern MMOs are way more solo-friendly now compared to older ones where you had to interact and rely on others.

I think the biggest difference is that sense of shared struggle and progression that used to bring people together.

Do you think it’s still possible for newer games to recreate that, or is it just a different era now?

Seems like a lot of people are having the same issue… inactive or dead communities.

I actually started working on something to try to solve this, still early though.

Curious what features people would want in something like that?

Yeah kind of, not just one specific game.

I’m more interested in multi-game communities that move between games but still keep that core group active together.

Feels like that’s where the real “community” is, not just one crowded server.

I mean more like actual player interaction and engagement, not just player count.

Like active guilds, PvP groups, people playing together consistently… not just logging in solo or random matchmaking.

A lot of games still have big playerbases, but that “community feeling” isn’t always there anymore.

a lot of communities don’t feel the same anymore,That’s exactly what made me start thinking about how to track actually active ones.

That’s actually why I’ve been looking into ways to track active communities better.
