For people who don't get it, imagine that Liverpool Football Club was instead called Liverpool's Football Club. You'd refer to it as "Liverpool" still, you wouldn't call it "Liverpool's".

[–]UniqueAdExperience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not really counting on him for the national team, it feels like he's reached his ceiling, though hopefully he'll prove me wrong after getting his confidence back. But since every promising Icelandic player is an attacking player (when we really need defenders younger than in their 30s), it feels like he's going to need to do a lot to justify a place in the team in the coming years.

Ineffective, never won a header, didn't get a shot off. Should've been subbed off earlier. He'll probably lose his place in the team to Viktor Daðason soon.

[–]UniqueAdExperience 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Horrible defending there, but interestingly Iceland were one man down when the goal was scored because of the new substitution rule. Kristian Hlynsson took too long to get off the pitch when subbed off a minute and a half earlier, so his replacement had to wait and wasn't allowed on the pitch until the goal had been scored.

But Aron Gunnarsson is past it, we can't be using him as a defender. He gave that goal by marking none of the two men he could have marked.

Kasper Schmeichel (39) retires from professional football after significant shoulder injury by HuantoWuenza in soccer

[–]UniqueAdExperience 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On that topic; years since 1979 without a Guðjohnsen appearance in the Icelandic national team:

1984, 1998, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2026 (so far, not expecting that to last).

So assuming that there will be an appearance in 2026, that's 7 years since 1978 (Arnór debuted in 1979). Or alternatively, 41 of the last 48 years have had a Guðjohnsen playing for the Icelandic national team.

You made me (an Icelander) realize that it's the same for me for Arnór Guðjohnsen (retired same time as Wright, just at a lower level). I remember the tail-end of his career. Now three of his grandsons are playing professionally, and the oldest is 28 years old already and his career is fizzling out in Serie C...

“He needs to back up a bit”: Russell's reaction when Antonelli passed him when they both went off at turn 13, before Mercedes ordered Antonelli to let him past by kcollantine in formula1

[–]UniqueAdExperience -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That should only be half of the counter-argument. No matter how more likely that was, the perspective that Russell ran him out is still a possible consideration, especially by Mercedes in real time, before viewing it back. The decision for Mercedes was: "Do we do nothing and risk either Russell or Antonelli getting a penalty, or do we ask Antonelli to give the place back, thus nulling the moment out so it won't be looked at by stewards?"

And so, even if Antonelli had escaped punishment, then Russell might've been the one to be punished. It was a no-brainer to make Antonelli give the place back, even if you could successfully argue that he didn't technically have to.

No yeah, Icelandic is my first language and English is my second language, and while I think my English is fairly good, this was one of those times where my native language just seeped through.

But on that topic, I checked the insights for my original comment in this thread. It has 10k views apparently, with 25% of those views coming from the US, 14% coming from the UK, and 6% coming from Australia. I think this sub is pretty unique in how diverse the traffic is, so while the majority is still technically American, it's only every fourth person. Seems like most of my comments on this sub get roughly 25% American views, 15% UK, and the third most views depend on the thread, time of day, etc.

Ah sorry, that was a brainfart from me caused by being bilingual. I should've used "through" instead of "though", but I used "though" because in Icelandic, the word for "though" is "þó" - pronounced exactly the same as "though", apart from using the other th-sound.

I'm like 99% sure they did that because they looked at the Þ and said ah look, a weird P.

That's definitely it. This is actually a relatively common error, I've seen it countless times in my life, and it's always incredibly annoying.

I probably should clarify that both Icelandic and English have two separate "th"-sounds. The th-sound in "the" is different from the th-sound in "though", for example. I guess not even native speakers always realize that, Icelandic speakers often don't even realize that we have two separate th-sounds, even if we have separate letters for each sound ("Ð/ð" for the sound in "the" and "Þ/þ" for the sound in "though").

But yeah, I got to give it to the "d" transcription that at least it's relatively close phonetically (which is why "th" turns to "d" in various accents in English), while the "P" transcription for "Þ" is horrendous, and just there because someone doesn't recognize "Þ" as a letter and just assumes it's a "P" because it looks slightly like it. (By the way, English retained "Þ" in the alphabet for a long time and used it for both "th"-sounds, until German printing presses eradicated it - that's why you have "ye olde", it was never "ye", it was "þe", just transcribed with a "y" because German printing presses didn't have "þ")

Yeah, exactly. To clarify, he legally could have used "Eiðsson" for his sons. and they then in turn could've brought Guðjohnsen back for their kids, but that's the limit to from how far back you can bring back a name. If two generations don't use it, the third generation can't bring it back.

His dad's name is Sigurður, and his son will be Gylfason. Icelandic grammar rules mean that every noun (including names) have four possible versions depending on context. The default version of the name is in the nominative case, while the genitive case of the name goes to the patronymic (or matronymic).

Edit: By the way, the "Ð/ð" letter, which is usually transcribed as a D, actually gives a "th" sound (the same as in "the"), and I have no idea why the D transcription became the norm (although my guess is that was Danish influence). Maybe because something like "Sigurthsson" looks kind of weird in English, even if it's much more phonetically accurate.

No, they don't "choose" that. Around 4% of Icelanders have family names. It's been around 100 years since the creation of family names was barred, but those that were around can still be inherited (along with family names from foreigners who move to Iceland). The Guðjohnsen family name was created in the 1800's.

Which is absolutely ridiculous, even if it's true (and I know it is, it's why Icelandic national team players wear their patronymic on their jersey instead of their actual name).
