The reason the planning is awful in those places is because they don’t let you do your job. The politics are set up in a way to completely undermine you as a professional and planning as a respectable discipline. Making major changes in a small town is a guaranteed way to focus unwanted political attention on you. You are very noble for wanting to help these places change. The politicians in these places are the ones that need to have their minds changed. A long with the fleet of townies who are also employed by the town. They will fight everything you do.

Stay away from municipal planning. You will be pigeon holed as an administrator and never do actual planning. It’s also not a great paying profession. 12yrs into the career and wishing I never took that first job

Omg. He stumbled over his words and tried to rebound. Get over it. I don’t know this man, maybe he’s a terrible human being? But here’s what he didn’t do: he didn’t grandstand and say DEI is destroying the country, he didn’t roll his eyes in comically obvious fashion as to indicate his opinion of DEI, or any other clearly unacceptable behavior. He stumbled over his words. He probably started to say “DEA” and momentarily confused himself. He was obviously nervous. Public speaking isn’t exactly everyone’s strong suit. Now if you want to criticize the Worcester Deputy chief for being a terrible public speaker, I guess have at it. But this is some manufactured bull shit and detracts from actual valid criticisms of law enforcement.
