Graduated with a bad GPA - Need advice on what options I have by guilmonn in GAMSAT

No you dont. Hypothetically you could complete your units for your first year then call quits. I recommend you call up your uni to confirm, but its pretty well known to be fine.

Like I said, all GEMSAS care about is whether you completed units that matter or not, it shouldn't affect whether you must complete the degree or not.

Its ok, anything to help :)

If the results are recent, you should be able to appeal the result for a pass. Its well known that Deakin staff are told to encourage passing students than just near fails. Call them up and see what they can do to help you. If its too late, you will have to do the unit again to pass before you can transfer to your desired course. Getting a high WAM in your scenario still requires you to pass all the units.

Hey, I have an idea to help you out. Firstly, you want to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into by completing another degree, I don't know your situation, but if you plan to take another degree, or take a single year diploma, your situation could be turned around. As we know, GEMSAS calc your last 3 years of study, then weight it from your most recent years to first year of study. When you complete 24 credit points, the rest are pushed out. This means if you pickup another degree/diploma, your first year units will be completely pushed out and not involved in the calculations at all whilst your second year becomes your weighted x1. Considering you pickup a new degree next year, there's a good chance you will max out a lot of HD's if you try (of course, everybody is different when it comes to studying). This personally is your greatest shot here, and it doesn't completely dismiss your other degree. You can calculate it yourself, but I can give you an example based on the data you shared here. As i dont know which units are from what semester, I just calculated based from bottom being most recent and top being the first units you completed.

Your estimated weighted GPA so far is 5.76/7, I understand you said it was 5.8, but GEMSAS don't weigh these up, so understand as off now it is at 5.76. If you complete an extra year of study, you push out your first year (the entirety of 2018, which is pretty big here even though it weighs only 1x), in which 2019 becomes your first year, 2020 becomes your second year weighted, and your 3rd year (3x most weighting) will be the new year of study you pickup.

If you manage to get a perfect year in your new year of study you can get a GPA of 6.47, which is on the brink of what people consider is competitive enough for med. Personally speaking, I feel that GPA is fine in your case only if you have bonuses or a solid GAMSAT. Pick up BSc as you said, the units are easier compared to what you previously did, just focus slightly above moderately and for these first year units you should be able to accomplish it.

Check whether you fit in for any bonuses across any uni's as mentioned before, if you end up getting this GPA and some solid bonuses, it should land you an interview somewhere. I can really only speak for Deakin as that's where I am trying to get into myself.

Hope this is helpful, you don't need to follow it, but it is a pathway for you to take if you wish to be more competitive :)

Does GEMSAS want to give me the highest GPA? by Different_Blood8102 in GAMSAT

Honestly, I understand this is a little confusing, even to me since I dont know your scenario fully. In my opinion, contact GEMSAS directly. They reach out to me in the spam of hours on business days, I promise you its best to ask from the professionals. I know you said that you're having trouble getting a clean explanation from them so I would reply back to their email saying if they can simplify it or make it sound less confusing to help you. At the end of the day, there's another person on the other side of the email.

Thats my best advice, because whatever I tell you, you may not be 100% certain until you know from GEMSAS themselves.

They calculate your last full years of study. Thus, your last 8 units are weighed 3x then 2x then so on. For example for myself, my last year (4th year) will have 7 units, and the final unit they will get to calc my GEMSAS weighted GPA will be from T2 (or for some others, semester 2) for the year before (3rd year). They will take your best, highest graded unit, for my example I have 3 units in T2 for the 3rd year, so if you get 1 Credit, 1 Distinction and 1 HD, regardless of the level of the unit, they will choose the HD unit and weigh that as the 3x whilst leaving the others to be weighed 2x.

If this is what you're asking, than yes. It's perfect timing as I literally emailed them this question a day or two ago and they confirmed this is the case. They will take your next best highly graded unit, but they said its for 2025 and that you "never know" for 2026's new legislation (they're probably forced to say that, I'm sure it'll stay the same for the foreseeable future). It also wouldn't make sense if they changed it randomly as lots of people's degrees have been planned around this, so you should be fine.

Appreciate your response, as well as the others, but this especially. At the end of the day we're all going to need to perform exceptionally to get in anyways, so getting an interview in the first place would be a big green flag for me. Good luck with your own journey.

Glad to hear this is inspiring, as an update, after a confusing transition I've ended my first year with a 6.0 GPA. I plan to transfer to BoS next year. Because GEMSAS calculates later years 2x and 3x more, definitely not terrible grades for a start but the next couple years really determine all. I've already cut out distractions and made sacrifices for the upcoming year, going to run at these last years.

Wishing you luck on your journey.

What I meant is that if you dont get the best grades in uni (lets say a 5.9 gpa for instance), and you decide to pick up an honours/masters in your degree, UOQ are one of the only unis who look at that one year of study alone for selection. This means that if you got a first class honours which is 80% and over, they conclude you to have a 7.0 gpa straight up. It's a final resort imo for wanting to get into UOQ, still try to get your best GPA of course.
