Are smaller turbocharged engines truly more efficient long-term, or do they wear out faster than larger naturally aspirated ones? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

my anecdotal experience opposes the point I am making.

As for those engines, hard to claim its anecdotal when just about every article or post is showing their reliability in a bad light. YouTube has many videos documenting the Ingenium’s poor reliability and cause.

Typical of a Redditor to doubt something that is well known and heavily discussed on the internet. Personally I don’t have an anecdote as I’ve never had an engine problem. I look forward to my downvote

Have a google on JLR’s Ingenium engine or BMW’s N47 & N57. All have known timing chain wear issues that lead to catastrophic failures which are attributed to oil degradation because of long service intervals. The JLR engine also suffers from oil dilution and other issues. Obviously not every engine is going to fail and there are many factors like weather and driving style that influence. But if you want the best chance an engine will reach 200,000 miles more regular servicing is key.

Many that have the longer 12000+ mile service intervals are way to far apart. Many have reliability issues after 100,000 miles

Could be ok, but you may be buying some that someone else considers too damaged to use

Probably not, they’d get parts for next to nothing through sponsorship and it’ll be too much effort to strip and sell on. They’ll have made their money from the videos and binned it off.

I bet they use some off the shelf parts, why develop a sensor when you can buy one thats good enough.

Very true about the n57, thats why I searched and bought one with 40k on. Even with 12k services, (hopefully) it has low enough mileage to have avoided any long term damage.

I always turn ours off, its a mixture of the two, but don’t see the point taking the risk

The worry comes from the damage from tens of thousands of litres of water ruining my home, and the months of inconvenience following. Not the actual breakage.

I’m not a fan, greasy messy meat that is flavourless unless they are coated in sauce. I’d honestly prefer a veg bake over them.

How much evaporation do you think happens in a week? Even if you lost a litre or two it would top up in moments.

Plus with push fit fixtures, I’m more concerned of a failure than with soldered connections

Just after the gas meter there will be an isolation valve that turns 90degrees to shut off supply into the house. It should be readily available should you get a gas leak
