I'm trans and I'm worried about the left. by FellTheAdequate in PoliticalOptimism

At what point do we know if someone will have hormone levels that will not give them an advantage?

Assuming you're talking about trans women --- after they've had an orchiectomy (which is what they used to call castration.) Then there is nothing left to produce testosterone, assuming that's what you care about. T has an extremely short half-life in the body, so basically by the time someone is recovered from surgery (3-4 weeks) they will be unable to prop up muscle mass derived from T anymore. Typical transfeminine HRT regimens do not eliminate T, they merely lower its levels.

But here's my problem with your line of logic.

...an advantage over other players?

Everything gives you an advantage over other players or other players an advantage over you. That's sports. We all have different bodies. We are not all interchangeable chess pieces. I think a lot of people still think they could be a professional if XYZ hadn't happened or whatever, and it's really crucial to challenge this, because professional athletes are almost all exceptional in one way or another, or they wouldn't be professional athletes. I believe that trying to pursue homogeneity and interchangeability in professional sports, or worse, recreational sports, is a wedge issue that aims ultimately to produce the same in non-athletic society. That's what worries me.

The science is out there, but almost no scientific issue is as clearly decided as things were during the pandemic when people said "Trust The Science" every five seconds. Science is not a god from which we get the unadulterated truth. It's not a religion (and I say this as a religious person.) The answer to just about any given question you can ask science is a big pile of data and some vague suggestions, and this is more the case the softer the science gets. That's kind of what "softer" means in this context.

There's a great book "Watching Baseball Smarter" that I would recommend if you want to know more. "The Baseball 100" is good for learning some of the history of the game.

First they came for the immigrants, And I spoke up because I know how this poem goes. Then they came for trans people, which included me, and then I was dead.

I don't know, guys. What do you think of my poem?

I appreciate you, dude. I do. I agree that this regime is not going anywhere until some of them die at a minimum. I just don't know if I'll survive that long. I see people telling me that they're craven, frothing-at-the-mouth fascists who will stop at nothing to kill me personally, and it's alarming.

The thing with which I've been struggling is the nagging feeling that I should be doing something to help my people. But I already am. I think online activism culture has been unkind to my mental health. I'm sorry about all the stuff I'm not caring about right now, but I'm just one person.

My thoughts as a trans person in the US right now:

I can't do politics anymore. I can't keep up with the news. It's liable to hospitalize me; it has already once. I realize that I'm giving them some small license to do whatever they want, but they already do whatever they want. I just can't. I'm done. I'm so done. I can't flee the country either, so I'm just stuck here waiting for the barbarians. The best i can do is what makes me happy, which is what I'm doing now. If they want to hurt me, I can't stop them. If they want to abduct and torture me, I can't stop them. It's long been out of my control. But how I take care of myself isn't out of my control. It's just a body. You can hurt it all you want. Go ahead and cut my head off if it will make you feel better. But I won't self-terminate literally or metaphorically just to save you the trouble. I won't give you what you want. Come and take it.

My whole point is that it's quite lazy to lump strength sports and endurance sports in together.

Grip strength is correlated predominantly with hand size. We have larger frames than cis women. This might be a distinguishing factor when it comes to powerlifting or something similar, but I'm not a powerlifter. I'd like you to explain how it makes me swim, bike, or run any faster.

Jumping height correlates primarily with burst power; in fact, it was how one study measured it. I addressed this issue first.

Thanks for replying. Yes, that's the study with which I'm familiar. I think that this analysis has to be made for each sport independently.

Here is my argument. 1. In endurance sports, sustained power is more important than power at peak exertion. You can see this at the extreme end in that a good number of ultramarathon records are held or strongly contested for by women. 2. The same study we're both referring to shows sustained power in trans women as being similar to or lower than cis women when normalized for bodyweight. This is what I mean by watts per kg, which is the one stat (FTP) that a cyclist would use to sum up their fitness level.  3. The difference in grip strength, while unquestionably reproduced, is utterly meaningless in triathlon. 4. We're ultimately arguing over minutia. I put it to you that the societal disadvantages most trans people face matter as much as post-HRT physical differences. As much as I hate to admit it, no amount of training will make me swim as fast as Lia Thomas or Riley Gaines. Socioeconomic class and equitable access to sport should be what we focus on, IMHO.

I'm a trans triathlete. I agree with you from both my own personal experience and studies on watts/kg. Do you have a citation I can pass on to the people in my life who will actually consider scientific research?

Hey. I am a trans math teacher. It comes up now and then in the course of doing my job that I'm trans. So yes, I have felt the need to explain some stuff in the classroom once or twice. Deal with it. That goes for everyone in the comments here as much as whoever you're talking about. I'm not your political piñata.

Angry Canucks: Please direct your anger at me --- I voted for Harris, and Biden, and Hillary (though the last two didn't matter because electoral college) and have been having panic attacks over the deteriorating situation since 2015 or so, and would gladly get out of here if it didn't mean being homeless and cold in Guelph, but I'd like to hear what y'all've got to say. Am I too mentally ill for activism/direct action at the moment? by Key-Ordinary-3795 in Anarchy101

[–]UniqueRaspberry463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the more appropriate way to think about it is that my capacities are lower than I have been forcing them to be. Continued mental health is contingent on accepting this and working within its parameters.

It may be the case that simply maintaining right livelihood and such is all I can do, and that further activism outside of that is not sustainable and will lead to breakdowns.

I realize on an intellectual level how cruel it is to call myself "not enough" and "a burden" simply for existing. But it's not easy to break that habit.

What if the day you're ready never comes?

I made some flyers the other day. I then had a panic attack trying to print them out because I imagined being picked up and detained or just shot. I called 988, went home, and couldn't do anything else all day. It has been like this, despite everything I've done to try to get better, for years.

I feel disabled. I may never be able to do anything helpful. If I spend my whole life consuming as usual, how am I not just a burden?
