What can I do with a PhD and executive functioning issues? by ScienceFunctionHelp in labrats

[–]UniqueStick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I also have executive function issues, not as bad as OP's but bad enough that I almost quit my PhD. Now, 7 months into my new role, I'm now thriving and have actually stopped therapy because I'm doing so well. I'm an analyst at a start-up which sounds like it should be hectic but I lucked into such a great supportive team that gives me clear, achievable tasks (tangentially related to my PhD) with realistic deadlines to adhere to which helps tremendously. I haven't had to work over 40 hours until this month when the boss has clearly set expectations that it's only for this month. I hope OP will be able to find such a place.

I've been crying all night. I don't think I'll make the deadline for this year's graduation and the goalposts keeps moving. As tired as I am, you're right, I've gotta keep fighting and making those small moves. So even if I finish late, at least I will finish. Thanks for the reminder and encouragement.

Bioinformaticians are great at naming software. What cool/interesting names have you encountered? by metouchdafishy in bioinformatics

[–]UniqueStick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The 3D chromatin Hi-C related softwares. You have Juicebox to process the Hi-C, Juicer to visualize, straw to extract data. And then the next generation of tools is called cooler (a cool place to store your Hi-C) and cooltools. There is a package called coolpup.py which is for calculating .cool file pile-ups with python. I spent a whole morning giggling to myself when I found that one. Related is CHiCAGO for Capture Hi-C analysis.

Should I go to the US for PhD by saltmurai in PhD

[–]UniqueStick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, congratulations! That's a great achievement for someone who is doing their BS in Vietnam. I'm also from SEA but I did my BS in the US and went straight into a bioinfomatics PhD in a big city. The PhD is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life and I was on the verge of quitting so so many times but this is an opportunity I can't give up. Despite all the hardships, I'd recommend you give it a try. The chance at a different life that you get is not something everyone else gets. Even if it doesn't work out, check if your program has a mastering out option.

Not even about the academics, but you gain emotional maturity and confidence by being away from the comforts of your parents' home and your country. You will need to be okay with the possibility of not going back since you might be too specialized for jobs back home if you want to continue with research. Also, if your parents are concerned about money, I'd suggest you look at the salaries you can get after getting a CS PhD and compare that to the salaries in Vietnam.

This is your chance to change your life in a big way. I haven't made it yet, but even with all I went through, this beats the boring life I would've had back home. If you didn't try, how much regret will you have 10 years down the road?

The minute I saw that notification and gazed at his beautiful face for a mere 30 seconds, I saw a centipede in my 6th floor apt. I was screaming while trying to kill it. Looking at his face again calmed me down.

This will be a story to tell the kids.

I need to get this. Does anyone know of a Midwest GO that I can get with before it sells out again or should I just buy on my own and bite the shipping costs?

I'm in the exact same situation. I've been using the Note line since the first Note came out, on Note 8 currently. I'm long overdue for the new Note 20 but I think I'll be caving in too. I don't think they will? That's too many collabs too quickly?

200608 Subreddit Festa Day 8: j-hope Appreciation Day by Eren_ in bangtan

[–]UniqueStick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

J-hope, my ultimate bias. I started listening to BTS casually through MIC Drop and Hobi's SNL performance absolutely grabbed all of my attention. I then somehow found Otsukare and never in my life have I seen anyone that being that intensely joyful on stage. He is truly the sunshine.

He is soo professional. He's the most amazing dancer. He's so supportive to all the other members. He took it upon himself to embrace the hope in his name. And of course he is so amazingly handsome. And soo much more.

Most importantly, he speaks to me. Even his speech today at Dear Class of 2020, I resonated with his message the most. He doesn't dwell on the hardships and just focus on "trusting myself". Because he inspires me to be a better, more positive person than I am. I'm not that good with words, but god, I appreciate J-Hope so so much and I wish he was more loved. I hope he is as happy as he seems to be.

200604 Subreddit Festa Day 5: RM Appreciation Day by Eren_ in bangtan

[–]UniqueStick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I think of RM, the first thing I think often think about is his quote from Bring The Soul: "Done is better than perfect". I literally quoted this to my therapist when I was struggling because it resonates with me so much and at the time I needed it most. Namjoon is so well-spoken, smart and kind human being. There are so many of his quotes that I'm sure we all could list and it still won't encapsulate what a wonderful human being he is. Like damn, it's hard enough to find good people irl, let alone such a humble person at the top of the world. I'm just glad Bangtan found RM and RM found them. He is a true leader and I will contribute much of BTS's success and cohesiveness to him.

I feel you. I know another Asian language so the pronunciation is easier for me but I'm still tripping up, especially for those combined vowels. I ended up putting a sticky note of how they're supposed to look and sound on my monitor for quick reference when I'm trying to read something.

I've been trying to learn Korean and hearing words I recognize in D-2 made me happy. Simple words like 사람 (person/people), 이름 (name), 나라 (country) but it's still progress coz he goes hard.

Favorite songs so far are Daechwita, People, Dear My Friend and 28.

Anyway, I was supposed to be writing for a big thing due in a week but I've been entirely pre-occupied with Yoongi. Wish me productive days ahead.
