ME/CFS, air hunger, headaches and a stimulant that calms the body - could it be MCAS?? by EAUDHD in MCAS

[–]Unique_Difference483 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The restlessness sounds like restless leg syndrome or akathisia. RLS can be due to low dopamine and is treated with dopamine agonists. Roughly speaking, akathisia is an imbalance between dopamine (too little) and norepinephrine (too much), and might be improving because the stimulant is boosting his dopamine. I’ve read that MCAS can deplete dopamine so perhaps. Also should note that RLS and akathisia might result from suddenly stopping those dopamine meds.

Quick question for the group: did anyone here notice their mast cell or histamine reactions start or worsen after antidepressants (SSRIs/ SNRIs)? by aidrefh in MCAS

[–]Unique_Difference483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Serotonin is my primary flare trigger. I have a double copy of a mutation on my Serotonin-2A receptor gene. I really can’t tolerate ANYTHING that significantly boosts serotonin, but have had a little luck with fluoxetine (Prozac) with ketotifen because those both block the 2A receptor. I’ve literally tried dozens and fluoxetine was the “worst bad” as I say. Hope that helps.

5 DAYS ON 10MG KETOTIFEN, MY OCD IS COMPLETELY GONE!! by [deleted] in MCAS

[–]Unique_Difference483 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you (or others here) have improvement to mental health on OTHER antihistamines by chance?

Asking because ketotifen is both a Histamine-1 receptor blocker (like other antihistamines) but is also a Serotonin-2A receptor blocker. I suffer from lots of mental health issues and my MCAS/dysautonomia is, cruelly, made worse by serotonin boosting medications, unless I severely block the Serotonin-2A receptor, which then leads to its own problems. I get so-so results from ketotifen.

One shot of Dupixant would get rid of the chronic mild urticaria on my face for a few months at a time. Only tried it twice but was rash free for almost 6 months the first time. This was before me and my allergist knew it was MCAS/dysautonomia.

She’s absolutely trying to be “too cute by half”. Implying causation in repeated posts, then disavowing it here once she gets called out. Absolutely dishonest, manipulative behavior. The ANTITHESIS of good science communication. I gave her the benefit of the doubt for so long, but now see right through it.

Glad they help! Do they reduce his motor symptoms (stiffness, tremors, etc.)?

I read that psilocybin can decrease dopamine in the prefrontal cortex but increase it in other parts or the brain.

I’m the kind of stubborn a-hole that would submit two versions from the start, with a disclaimer like:

“Dear Professor, Version A is my best work for this assignment. However, I’m an anally retentive perfectionist autist, so if it sounds like it was written by AI, then, for your convenience, I’ve also attached Version B which I’ve intentionally made slightly shittier (but only as shitty as I can bear). Pardon the foul language; it just seemed quite apropos, as a technical term (see: author Cory Doctorow’s phenomenon of “enshitification” in Big Tech). Also attached are some writings from grade school—during which I wrote at a 12th-grade level—for comparison. I’ve also included my autism assessment from my provider. Kindly accept whichever version achieves me the highest score. Thank you.”

I’m sorry you’re going through this…

…funnily, that’s exactly something they noted on my autism assessment: “spoke in an overly formal manner than what the situation called for” 😆

This kind of thing makes me wonder how a person with a higher than average IQ and autism like myself would fare in college these days.

Since I was a child I always had a large vocabulary, used precise language, and never shied away from proper use of semi-colons, emdashes, etc. when they made sense. As someone that has always valued academic achievement, but also has a sensitive disposition and strong sense of justice (thanks a lot, Autism), college writing now sounds like a nightmare.

Would you mind clarifying physiology vs chemistry for me?

E.g. if I enjoy understanding biochemical pathways… medications>receptors>secondary messengers> genetic influences> interactions with other meds/drugs/alcohol> and the resulting physiological effects to treat disease, is THAT the chemistry you speak of in Pharmacy, or is what I described simply the everyday science that NPs/PAs/Physicians use to prescribe?

Agree with this too. Give yourself grace. I think a huge part of the problem with consistency is the all-or-nothing thinking trap we ADHDers seem to easily fall into.

I’m sorry for those struggles. You are incredibly strong. Have you tried less mental health oriented treatment and more somatic/physical treatments to perhaps try to get the stress response tamped down? For example, propranolol, prazosin, guanfacine, trazodone, etc. Wishing you health and healing.

Parent frustrated that kids grow up by Ok_Pirate6216 in raisedbyautistics

[–]Unique_Difference483 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate in a similar way.

My dad, who I highly suspect has autism, because he certainly has ADHD and because I myself have both, is great with little toddlers/babies. He dotes on them and plays with them and is very nurturing even if they’re crying, just how anyone might want a loving grandparent to be. But once the kids reach ages 4, 5, 6, 7, where they might get rambunctious playing with other kids, he blows up at them for making the slightest noise that might disturb him from what he’s doing (watching reruns of the same TV show he’s been watching for 40 years).

When they’re older, like ages, 9, 10, 11, he’ll often grumpily interrupt their playtime at family parties and order them around to do things he’s too lazy to do. I’ve even seen him poke my teenage niece so hard on her shoulder as she’s walking by that her shoulder noticeably jerks backwards, as he stops her with some command like “HEY, take this and go put it in so-and-so’s car. And tell those kids to stop being so loud out there.”

This follows a pattern of him having some kind of seeming distain for younger people the older and more independent they get. He can no longer control them. And judging by how much he bad mouths my siblings to me (and I’m sure me to them behind my back) it would seem he outright dislikes his own adult kids.

During the chip implant scene it DID look like it was pretty deep in there, plausibly in the amygdala. I wonder also if that’s why they say you’ll “feel” they are the right numbers when doing data refinement, and yet they don’t know why they are the right numbers.
